The reason why Meta failed is that Facebook is so unimaginative that they just want you to do completely normal things you can do irl through Facebook. It's like they didn't know what real humans like to do with VR and so they just searched "Fun Activities" and tried to put them in the metaverse. They want to monopolize social interaction, not enhance it. VRChat, Pavlov, RecRoom succeed because they have enough humans on the dev team to understand "VR allows us to do a lot of new things, let's do those new things instead of trying to replace real life events." while facebook thinks that just putting something in a headset makes it better.

I mean, if a virtual world would feel as real as the real world most people would probalby jump right in and never come out. But that would require some sort of brain manipulation to make you experience the simulation as if it were real. Right now we've only covered part of the hearing sense and even less of the visual sense. We haven't even touched (ha!) any of the other basic senses. Let alone the conscious experience as a whole. But yeah, as the person above says, it's not a high bar.

Well, let's not get too crazy here. People don't like the fact that 1. It's Facebook trying to monopolize VR, and 2. While adding nothing new to it that doesn't already exist but better in things like VR Chat, Rec Room, and so on. I can say that as someone that loves VR/AR, is very enthusiastic about what it has the potential to become, is actually quite optimistic of a future with ubiquitous VR/AR, and *also* thinks that Facebook's Metaverse is total shit. My batshit conspiracy theory about the Metaverse: Mark Zuckerberg is secretly arranging to create a zombie army using VR headsets. He sells the oculus VR for cheap, unveils the Metaverse as a VR event so that almost everyone who has an oculus is online at the same time and then he hacks them all at once to create a hypnosis program that turns everyone into mindless zombies under his control. And that's how Mark takes over the planet. Kinda like the old Spongebob movie where Plankton takes control of everyone with the chum bucket helmets.

It worked with Facebook, so it should work with VR... Such a dumb way of thinking from those guys. Facebook works because people don't need any effort to use it, just grab your phone Open FB and done, that is all, VR needs a VR set and a PC with enough power to run VR as well as space to move without smacking your dog in the face. VR as it is right now requires too much effort to be something people would use as much as Facebook, they probably should have gone with something like augmented reality. Something like, here I am playing a Game of chess with a guy in another country, in my dinner table grabbing the pieces with My own hand and seeing the result in My phone screen. This is doable with AR, and an easier sale to current users of FB that VR is.

The problem with the “metaverse” is they haven’t really explained what the “metaverse” is beyond “you can do this or be that”. And most of what they do show doesn’t really mean anything because we don’t really see what it actually is or means. There’s no reason for it to replace zoom and shit because those are already fine. No reason to be in a “virtual meeting” when you are in a meeting already. “See your friends” I can do that with video calling and actually see them rather than an avatar. What they should be doing is trying to push it more like VRchat with a “be anything go anywhere” vibe to it, but properly show it, not this weird CGI trailers with holograms and shit that don’t exist

The problem is most people don't have a clue what it is, yet talk about it so confidently as if they do know, because so many other people (who also don't know) further validated their incorrect assumptions by agreeing. Most people are happy to immediately dismiss it rather than think critically or try to understand, so the narrative keeps getting perpetuated. What we watched in this video is not the Metaverse. What they showed is a basic VR experience. "I can do that with video calling and actually see them rather than an avatar." It won't be long before we will have realistic looking avatars, so that's a temporary problem. But regardless, Avatars have many purposes beyond representing a literal version of yourself. People more often than not won't want to be shown as themselves online, the same way we each have usernames, or how people use characters in games that look nothing like them. "What they should be doing is trying to push it more like VRchat with a “be anything go anywhere” vibe to it" Some companies are. This video is about NBA's product, which again isn't even the Metaverse.

Web3.0 is the metaverse that runs on crypto. Its unique properties give it many more uses than fiat, such as incentives for owning a specific crypto in order to gain mutual benefits. NFTs regulated as lawful code will be able to execute contracts that hold the same power as traditional ones, such as titles to cars, houses, renters agreements, medical documents, etc.; the advantage comes from being able to do it with a few clicks through a decentralized wallet, with someday the same amount of security as traditional finance.

Facebook has failed to innovate for years and it's starting to bite them in the ass. They buy a bunch of small start up social media companies and don't incorporate any of their new ideas onto their main platform then wonder why more people aren't using Facebook. It's obvious that they're desperate to find some market to latch onto to where they can have a consistently growing user base but if the Metaverse is really the best they could come up with, with all the resources they have, then I foresee a slow and painful death for Facebook as a company.

That's the problem with fake numbers, these "projected numbers." They act like not reaching a goal is actually a loss. Well then don't make the goal. Boom. Money in your pocket anyway. Especially since you already have most of the planet under your wing anyway. "There are 7 billion people on the planet. We need 9 billion users by the end of the month or we're gonna lose everything! MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!"

This metaverse gimmick is also talked about in academia. Basically, Facebook is forcing this metaverse product as a desperate attempt to retain their audience. Since majority of their users on Facebook are older age, they don’t see their platform retain their dominance over social media much longer. This desperate grasp at pioneering ar/vr is very risky, simply because the technology is just not there yet. So many user usability problems still left unsolved, but they’re trying to maintain investor hopes alive by blowing a huge budget in advertisement/sponsorships
