#Abstract
Neal Stephenson coined the term metaverse in 1992, and ever since then, it has served as the north star guiding the development of multiuser immersive technologies and platforms. In past cycles, academia and industry created various projects to implement the metaverse.
Some were even contemporaneous efforts, but they did not come together as something akin to the internet and were not massively adopted.
In this talk, we will discuss the early 2000s wave of metaverse technologies, compare it to the current one, and draw some takeaways aimed at making significant progress towards the original vision.
Are we reinventing the wheel?
What worked before, and what didn’t?
Where are the significant advances and conditions not present previously?
