Thinned Tremclad out of a spray gun. Cheaper than buying a bunch of rattle cans, and quicker and easier to do if you already have a spray gun and compressor (Assuming most car guys have a space, a mini compressor at least, and 20 to spend on a throw away gun) I go about 20% thinners to paint, and let it fly!

I painted my Corsica for $30, in the high winds, it's been 2 years and it's still holding. I wet sanded it, taped it off and sprayed it. I dont have a compressor, a shop or a spray gun

@@jasonsanderford436 When I was in my mid 20s my neighbor sold me her 95 Beretta for $200 because she thought that the transmission was shot (it just needed a fluid and filter change) but I sanded it all down, went to Walmart and bought a bunch of $1 cans of Walmart spray paint (primer, base, clear) in Royal Blue, primed it in my backyard under the huge tree, sprayed it, cleared it, and then wet sanded and buffed it after it had dried, and I sold it a few months later for $1500. I mean, it wasn't like glass, but for what I had into that paintjob it looked fairly decent.

don't need a ring compressor for these just use a or two plastic picks and feed the rings into the hole by compressing them one at a time and dropping them in. faster and much safer than a tool and makes sure you get them clocked right.

Did you do anything to the oil pump? I remember seeing them shim em for higher oil pressure before.

Yeah, you can port the pump and shim the spring for higher oil pressure, but I've made it work with a stock Melling replacement before. I have a Killer Motorsports Stage 3 ported and shimmed oil pump on my built LSVTEC right now, but even a factory stock oil pump would work fine for a low power turbo engine. I realize that this engine is a single cam D series, but as long as he had a Z6 pump in it, it should be fine. I made over 400 whp on my B18B1 with a factory unmodified pump before and had no issues.

@@Cpt_Litty Not necessarily, I was referring to a B series, but I would imagine that with a D series the Z6 or Y8 pump would flow more due to the fact that they're both designed to flow with higher pressures at high RPM. I didn't say that the same thing applies to a D series engine, I was just agreeing with you.

Plastigage is better than taking measurements unless you're in a temp controlled environment and have an expensive micrometer and dial-bore gauge and about triple the time to spend. More complicated and more sophisticated does not mean more effective.

A few friends did this with a Protege hatcback. It was THE car at the local shows, girls loved drawing on it, people signed it, he did it up in dumb liveries a few times. It was an attraction. 2 minutes at a car wash and its back to satin black.

Those rings are gonna spin all over in the bore and end up where they wanna end up anyways. I do the top 2 180 apart and the oil rings 90 from those. Never had an issue

Assembling the engine is easy, building an engine is a different subject with all the feeler gauges and micrometers and the training to use them correctly and all that jazz.

From what I hear, #2 and #4 fire before #3 so there is more heat and stress on #3 cyl. Most tuning software allows enrichment on individual cylinders so you can add some extra fuel to #3 for safety.

Those ring compressors suck. When building my last motor using Wossner pistons, I bought a bore-specific tapered compressor tool from the US as I couldn’t find one easily in the uk. Made fitting a dream. The oil control rings are 3 piece and really delicate on the Wossner pistons. How did you stagger Your ring gaps, 120 degree or at 180 intervals?

Hayden, I know that you know what you're doing, but you're no master mechanic, like me, but we both know that turbo engines are supposed to be a little loose (other than bearing clearances), and your ring gaps were good, but as long as your main clearances were good and the rod journals weren't ground (or if they were you bought the compensating bearings), your rod bearings are most likely to be good. As long as the engine spins over decently by hand you'll be straight.
