Just pulled the trigger on one of these. The feature set put it head and shoulders above similar priced units. And I’ve been a fan of Metrel for a long time. Thanks for a great video that helped me make the choice.

Took me a while to get the hang of my metrel 3152 tester, it has so many settings and so much customisation. Highly recommend tester and metrel customer service is very good. Great video Gaz 👍

I've gotta be honest, for someone currently training, and picking up bits of kit as and when needed, the cost of a multifunction tester is a big pricetag to fork out at this stage. This device on the other hand, while it may be entry level, seems bloody brilliant. £533 for a full kit, I'm not sure there's any other brands that come close to this.
@efixx3 жыл бұрын
We like the metrel kit - good build quality and packed with features.

@@efixx I have to agree with @brook316 as a student its not been too bad picking up hand tools here and there but the price of an mft even by kewtech is way too pricey - at the moment anyway - but this metrel one looks great and is keeping up with the technology advances we're seeing now. I don't doubt it's quality especially when you consider the metrel tester you have previously showcased and gave away in the first lockdown live feed last May

Currently use a DL9118 British company great tester large display top of their range around £550. How do you carry out a Zs on a light as I didn’t see a carry strap, does it have an automatic test function. Personally prefer a dial to change tests rather than have to scroll through them. Happy New Year 🥳
@Obsiqax2 жыл бұрын
Practically fresh from an apprenticeship after being plenty familiar with the Megger 1741, found this video having no clue how to even do continuity with this. I think I prefer the older dials of the Megger to LCD screens, but this has been a help to understand this thing for sure.

I was looking for information on the Metrel MI 3123 (Earth / Clamp) tester and came across your video on KZbin. I really appreciate the way you present these MFTs. Could you create a similar video for the MI 3123? It would be great if you could include a demo on measuring specific earth resistance (soil resistivity) and determining the number of rods needed to achieve the correct earth resistance value. Thank you!

It would be nice if you could do your full range of tests and auto populate the NIC etc certs while testing. Always end up filling out things twice regardless of which brands gear. Anyone using something that auto populates as I am fed up with Megger/NIC for this reason alone.

RS232 lead on a new piece of Test Equipment? How quaint. It's like the last 25 years of USB had never happened.
@efixx3 жыл бұрын
The Bluetooth makes this bit redundant.
@kevcruickshanks3 жыл бұрын
@@efixx So why have it?
@cjhification3 жыл бұрын
Always called it a serial cable when I worked in instrumentation as RS232 was just a standard like RS485 or RS422. Used a lot of SDI-12 and RS485 on little Panasonic toughbooks by river banks and lakes or out at sea, was a good time in life, would still be doing it if it wasn't for restructuring coming along and removing the post.
@kevcruickshanks3 жыл бұрын
I still use the serial leads almost daily communicating with UPS systems. Either a null modem (pins 2&3 crossed), or 'straight through' (2&3 not crossed). I also carry two rs232 serial - USB adaptors, one with a prolific chipset, the other FTDI chipset. Some systems can occasionally get arsey establishing comms. If one fails the other invariably works. Slowly but surely manufacturers are moving to USB (either USB B or micro USB), or to a Web browser via a cat 5 patch cable
@cjhification3 жыл бұрын
@@kevcruickshanks been ages since I last interacted with kit in that way, thought it would largely have been replaced as it's been over 10 years, but actually thinking about it, utilities, where this type of tech is used, are often very slow to adapt to novel technologies like USB, which I'm sure there are some water companies that still don't use due to (perceived) risks associated with it being so new. Remember hearing about 1 company that ran optical oxygen probes for 5 years before having enough confidence to completely retire the galvanic or rapid pulsed galvanic probes used up till that point.

Happy Newyear efixx ! That is a nice piece of kit, this metrel seems easy to use. Ofcourse only for people who have watched all the GSH and Efixx video's ;)

I have owned a metrel 3125 for 8 years and on its 3rd calibration it failed for having a faulty IR unit. Took it to another place for a second opinion and they said the same. Quoted 300 quid to fix so wrote it off and went back to meggar. I still keep it on the van for the apprentices to run round and get r1r2 etc.

Hi Gaz. Is nice to hear You going through all the features. Would be very useful if You share your opinion on for who is that tester good and for who is not. Would it work only on single phase, threes phase etc or domestic, comercial, industrial Regards Matt

Great vid as always Gaz, I’ve been using the Metrel Mi3100se for the last year and it’s a great bit of kit especially for it’s price. My only and I mean only fault I can find with it is the tip commander. It works perfectly but it’s a bit big. I don’t see why they can’t do a probe like the Kewtec KT63 has as that’s a really good feature. Or are Metrel doing something about this already?

Looks like a nice bit of kit, apart from looking like Dom Jolly carrying it haha.. looks nice and compact compared to my megger 1741.. but it doesn't have a neck strap which i could see being a pain, not sure i like that probe, but not seeing it in the flesh.. hard to tell.. be interested to try one, the interface looks really well laid out .. but due to the pandemic.. no real trade shows or man caves to play with big boys toys ... one thing i do like.. proper colour test leads :)why megger thought it was a good idea to mix old and new colours.. I've no idea.. love to give one a good testing ... bring on the vacine.. great video gaz, happy new year fella

I've had one of these for a couple of years and absolutely hate it. It should have been one of the great mft's, however a complete lack of thought renders it quite useless. First of all those awful test leads. Dreadful plug in proprietary leads with primitive tips croc clips and you will need replacements as they are particularly durable (checked out the cost of replacements?). Then there is the killer - the power button. Raised above the fascia as it is, it ensures that unless you keep it in its bulky bag the power button will be operated while in your tool bag leaving you with a flat battery before you start. This mft neede a clam shell front hard cover and a slide power switch from the start. I suspect that like most manufacturers noone in the design team has ever even been on site let alone done any testing. I've used them all now. Fluke is over priced and warranty and servicing is in Holland. Megger are horrible to deal with and diabolically expensive, crap leads and some question over broken pc boards giving rogue readings. Di log, TIC and other clones are nasty to use. Kewtech in my experience trounce the the lot of them and are easy to deal with in chesham. They sponsored a college electrical department I worked at and I use and abuse a kt65 almost everyday. It never lets me down and is the only one I trust (I've a kt63 as well and it's hopeless to use professionally due to its short time out and loss of null). I know I'm fussy, but I think at between 700 and a grand a pop I've a right to be.
