@curtjohnson7969 I was playing these games since I was old enough to hold a controller. My mom had to make me a game on Wind Waker when it came out cause I was only four in 2002 and I remember I used to always be yelling at my parents "CUT THE GRASS!" So they made me a game just so I could cut the grass and shut up lmao. I had Metroid 1 on GBA, it's very much environment. If your parents are a bunch of simpletons that find stupid mario enthralling well yeah of course you're gonna be so dumb and narrow minded as to not appreciate a game that requires a thought and utilizes more than two buttons ffs.

I'm also a Metroid fan in their 20s, so you're not alone. When I saw Metroid Dread get announced, I knew it was a cancelled DS game, so I planned on buying it to pay respects to those who waited for so long. While I waited, I played all 4 of the mainline games, Zero Mission, Samus Returns, Super, and Fusion, which got me hyped and ready for Dread. When I finished Dread, I got curious about the Prime games, so I bought the trilogy on Wii U, just in case the remasters didn't come, but the first one did come, so I bought it as soon as I could, and I've been enjoying it ever since. I hope it outsells the original Metroid Prime and ends up making Metroid one of Nintendo's top tier franchises alongside Mario and Zelda.

Honestly, despite the disappointment fans had with Federation Force, Metroid's recent resurgence started with that game. The next year we got the announcment of Prime 4 and the release of Samus Returns. Then Ridley and Dark Samus were added to Smash, after a while Dread's release with high sales (for a Metroid game) and critical acclaim and now Prime Remastered shadowdropped outta nowhere which is more than likely the start of the marketing push for Prime 4. Unless Prime 4 absolutely tanks Metroid's future appears to be pretty bright!
@theglasshalffull6958 Жыл бұрын
Damn, I never took that into account. Maybe somehow the overwhelming controversy showed Nintendo that people still really cared about the franchise? Or maybe more metroid was planned long before and they wanted to give fans a little appetizer before all the other bigger announcements... meaning partly what I said in the video was wrong lol With how the Switch has been doing software wise I can fully say with confidence that prime 4 will crack 2 million sales... and maybe upwards of 6-7 million (wishful thinking but that would be HUGE for the series)

@@theglasshalffull6958ederation Force was even announced in 2015 by Tanebe to be a prelude to "the next home console 3D Metroid title"and the entire purpose of Federation Force was to establish "concepts that would be crucial to that story". Also Federation Force had been in development since 2009 with Samus Returns being in development hell since at LEAST 2006, with Dread being in development hell since at least 2005, with active development on the Mercury Steam version of SR starting iirc in 2014. Metroid never really stopped or planned to stop, they just had development hell to work through because Nintendo prioritized other franchises for their in house teams and Retro was per their own words "burnt out on Metroid". (Also Prime Remastered's datamined build date shows it was finished and went gold in June 2021 so Nintendo has been literally sitting on it since before we knew Dread survived)

Oh yea! I forgot that dread was in production for a super long time, surprised that samus returns was as well, seemed that was a more recent play with prime 4 announced just before that. Probably would've been good mentions in my video. Nonetheless, during the big drought from like 2010-2017. I would like to think Nintendo really got a scope for how dedicated metroid fans truly are, so those new games that they were planning to make wouldn't go in vain. Plus Prime remasterd has been selling pretty well so I hope that keeps up
@JacobNintendoNerd99 Жыл бұрын
@@theglasshalffull6958 they were in development hell because Sakamoto had to shop around for a studio he trusted with remaking SR (Nintendo didn't want/couldn't afford to throw an in house studio at it like with Zero Mission) and also due to system limitations of the DS not really doing the concepts of Dread justice. Everything kind of fell into place when MercurySteam showed up pitching a Fusion remake, which Sakamoto basically explained he had been trying to remake Metroid 2 since just after Zero Mission and wanted them to do that instead. Then the work on Samus Returns made Sakamoto confident in having MercurySteam being the team tasked with using their manpower to push Dread over the finish line. Next Level had been attached to Fed Force since 2009 and it was originally intended to be a DSiWare title using the same engine as Metroid Prime Hunters. Hardware limitations bedeviled Next Level similarly to the issue with Dread, and the final version on the 3DS still made a lot of sacrifices to the core vision to get it to happen. Sylux being the main antagonist of what eventually manifested as Prime 4 had been the plan since Prime 3 if they ever were to do another game, so Prime 4 being a sequel to Hunters and Fed Force and being seemingly almost entirely disconnected from the core Prime trilogy had been the plan since 2007, but Retro got burnt out on doing Metroid and the team jumped at the chance to switch gears to Donkey Kong for a few years. They seem to be forming a sort of "Sylux trilogy" as opposed to the Phazon trilogy, with a focus being on the Federation somewhat similar to Prime 3 as well. A Metroid RTS pitched by someone within Retro who even made a demo for it was shot down by the rest of the Retro staff during this time as a result of the burnout. Also worth noting that Retro was at one point pegged to do Samus Returns on the original DS back in the early days of that development hell, but this burnout also made them decline. Hopefully that clarifies things. It's worth noting that some of the leaks that "got it right" with Prime Remastered having been done since early 2021 and showed accurate information (such as it being standalone and based on the Japanese Wii version) say not only were Nintendo and the non-Retro studios that worked on Prime Remaster already well underway with doing Prime 2 and 3 remssters (with Retro supervising), but Nintendo and Retro were in talks about doing a Hunters and Fed Force remaster since they were "much more significant to the plot of Prime 4 and were viewed as a sort of required reading" compared to the trilogy. So we may end up getting all 5 prime games remastered for Switch if the leaks continue to indeed be true, rather than just the trilogy.

@@theglasshalffull6958 kind of both. To me it doesn’t have the fast pace that makes all the great Metroids (super, fusion, prime, echoes, dread) great. You have to go through sr388 and basically do the same boss fight over and over and over with almost no variety. The controls are clunky compared to dread and the worst part. The absolute worst part about the game are the enemies. Every single room is packed with at least a dozen small enemies charging at you from all direction. The only practical way to kill them most of the time is the parry. The parry is not as refined as it is in dread. Every time you want to use it you have to stand still and wait. The parry windows are inconsistent and random. It makes the game a slog and small areas that you should be able to move through quickly end up slowing you down and ruining the experience

Now that you mention it, I do remember some of those complaints when the game first came out. @johnlucas1543 Жыл бұрын
Your video is very accurate. And I would also add that Metroid has the problem of TIMING. After the 1st game, it's always coming out at the wrong time. And that hurts its traction. Super Metroid was a Masterpiece of Masterpieces...but the mid-1990s was moving into the 3D Polygon era. And Nintendo was the company who helped usher it in! Starfox came out in 1993 the year before Super Metroid in 1994. Plus game rentals was a factor too. More people probably rented this game to death than bought this game to death. So some of the best sprite work available was lost in this mess...a mess that would see the debut of Sony PlayStation & Sega Saturn that same year. Nintendo was the last one to the 4th Generation with the Super Famicom/Super Nintendo. And now the 5th Generation was getting well underway. Donkey Kong Country in 1994 probably didn't help either. Gunpei Yokoi was a member of Nintendo's R&D 1 (along with Yoshio Sakamoto) which produced the Metroid series. The failure of his Virtual Boy, his departure from Nintendo later on, & his accidental death damaged the Metroid series in the Nintendo 64 era. Plus the team was scared to follow up the practically perfect Super Metroid. When Nintendo found Retro Studios to usher Metroid into the 3D era that Nintendo 64 embodied, they launched the acclaimed Metroid Prime on the Gamecube...which was suffering from the same media campaign Nintendo 64 suffered from. All the "Nintendo is out of touch" "When will Nintendo go 3rd Party like Sega?" noise & claptrap that erupted thanks to Sony's command of the gaming media. All the "Kiddie Console" nonsense Nintendo had to face down with Sony's industry influence. Nintendo's dropping Metroid Classics left & right on Gamecube AND Game Boy Advance (the "remember when we were kings?" console) & outside of people who appreciated Nintendo's ethos of gamemaking, they got lost in the shuffle. Not to mention this is now a world where Bungie's Halo exists on Microsoft's XBox. The Blue Ocean would have to be followed to break Sony's brainwashing of gaming culture through DS & Wii. And in the process the outlook of Nintendo changed. Their image changed to RIGHTFULLY bring in the NEW gamers. Metroid was released in spinoff & mainline forms on DS & Wii but now was somewhat out of place in the Nintendogs/Wii Sports world they cultivated. And the lingering anti-Nintendo culture that changed from "Kiddie Console" into "Casual Console" still hampered their ability to get Metroid to resonate like they wanted. Only the Metroid faithful stayed true. The Gaming Revolution was supposed to end divisions between Gamers & UNITE them under Nintendo's Everyone banner. But some people were fighting the hell out of it & anything Nintendo tried to do with this increasingly wayward industry. So Metroid: Other M had no chance because resisters were scared to try new things & the Metroid faithful got used to seeing Metroid a certain way. It would take another 10 years or so to break down this resistance to Nintendo's ethos. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was a victim of this conundrum as well even though it has recovered better. Another thing about Metroid is that it doesn't compromise what it is too much. It won't make itself TOO easy to play. The frustration & 'lost-ness' is part of the experience on purpose. It's claustrophobic, labyrinthian, beautiful, & lonely. With the lead character having no face in her space helmet, it makes it hard to sell in Japan which has always liked faces to relate to on their games all the way back to Space Invaders. The eyes in bushes & clouds in Super Mario games is connected. But that's what Other M was trying to fix by showing the person of Samus Aran in more detail & that has helped Metroid's Japanese acceptance more. Who is the Woman behind the Space Helmet & what makes her do what she does? The Switch has achieved the mission attempted first by Wii U to finish UNIFYING the gaming world as DS & Wii intended. And then here comes Metroid Dread to respark the series. It's no surprise the Metroid Prime Remaster is having this surge. It took over 35 years but Metroid is now RIGHT ON TIME without having to compromise too much of what it is as a series. I believe each prior Metroid Prime will be remastered one by one until we get to Metroid Prime 4. And I believe Metroid Prime 4 will be a boon to Metroid much like Breath of the Wild was for The Legend of Zelda.
@theglasshalffull6958 Жыл бұрын
Damn first off, you really know your metroid lore god damn. And yeah man, I feel like now more than ever Nintendo has cracked the code on how to finally get the series bigger than it was before! And apparently it might already be working with Dread's success and demand for prime remastered who knows how much bigger the series will get! Now as for having a BOTW effect the chances are slim since Zelda was always a big series even before BOTW. But if the game releases alongside a Switch 2 or Nintendo's next gen console perhaps it can reach as high of a success.
@johnlucas1543 Жыл бұрын
@@theglasshalffull6958 Thank you brother & it's nice to see guys like you get behind the Metroid series. We always need new blood. That's what keeps legacies like these alive for generations to enjoy. I was inspired listening to your video & all this just came from the heart. I had to break it down. It has frustrated me too to see Metroid not match in Commercial Sales what it does in Critical Acclaim. Because the industry RESPECTS Metroid & always has. Gamers RESPECT Metroid. We just gotta get folks to BUY it. But at least Nintendo doesn't do their franchises dirty like say Days Gone. They nurture their IPs so that they CAN grow into monsters down the road. Things just go dormant but no franchise from Nintendo is ever really dead. Imagine if Nintendo was disappointed in Gamecube Animal Crossing for "only" selling 3 million copies. Imagine if they cut the franchise off then. You would have never seen the 40 million from New Horizons. I think the breakthrough is now. Nintendo pairing Metroid with the Switch OLED shows their confidence in this franchise. Like you said, it's one of the most seemingly "non-Nintendo" Nintendo games they have. It's difficult for any real videogame to compete with that level of appeal. Not to mention the popularity of the show. The problem with prime is that it came about during a time which Nintendo refused to fully commit to online play and when online play was beginning to take over and push out typical single player games, especially first person shooters. People were playing more technical shooters online with their friends during that time and I remember the GameCube not fully committing to online play. The Wii was underpowered and anyone who had it was probably into more family friendly games and not a first person action adventure. I think prime 4 stands a better chance because we see more single player IPS getting alot more AAA love and people are starting to enjoy them again. It helps that the switch has a more traditional controller as well.

That's actually a really good point. The single-player games have definitely been getting a lot more love no matter the system and metroid prime being as good as it is should hopefully see more love in the future. So do you think Metroid prime on the GC would've sold more if it had multiplayer functionality?

5:50 From what I understand, Fed Force was not originally intended to be a Metroid game. Nintendo wanted an online co op game for the 3DS, and eventually settled on Metroid Prime as the IP for it's shooter mechanics. There was no chance for Fed Force to be anything else because the game first was pre destined to be online co op oriented. That may not change anyone's disappointment, but it was either Fed Force or nothing at the time

I do honestly really really hope that they release prime 4 with the newest console which might also be in 2024. Either as a launch title which idk if that would ever happen or later down the line. Seeing what Retro can do with this absolutely insane engine update they made, I would like to see how much more they could squeeze out of it by producing it for a far better console than the 6 year old switch. I would be totally fine though if they still released it on switch since the engine overall looks already breathtaking enough even for switch standards, it is by far the best looking switch game

Recent treatment with this franchise can only be explained as one of those weird Nintendo things. I really do not understand this company. We get them doing shit like the Switch Online service, paid with no dedicated servers (on most games), no messaging friends and then they turn around to Metroid that doesn't really sell that well and just announce shit like Samus Returns and Dread. The fact they delayed Prime 4 speaks volumes about how they are handling it and as a big Halo and Pokémon fan, it makes me super happy to see this sorta treatment in the current state of the games industry.

@anthonygillette Жыл бұрын
I think that the biggest reason for the lacking sales is accessibility and difficulty. Accessibility because the majority of the major releases were on home consoles, while the Wii had major sales it was stronger in the casual markets than the hardcore ones. Metroid is an in depth and difficult to master franchise, where most of the games I couldn’t expect just anyone to beat. The boss battles in Prime alone (especially the end boss) are not easy street; whereas games that are inbetween Metroid’s difficulty and Pokémon’s (like Zelda) usually have very simple bosses, or at the very least most of the bosses can’t drain your health in a matter of seconds. Now that the switch has a HUGE install base including a lot more gamers who relish a challenge, we’re going to see the sales for the games reach nearer to their full potential. And as more are exposed to Metroid firsthand, I think the sales of past games will also go up.
@theglasshalffull6958 Жыл бұрын
Completely agree with you! Especially when it comes to the wii. The wii owners were dominated by casual gamers who had no interest for the the series and were probably offput by how out of place/mature the games were compared to everything else. Now that the Switch is bigger than the Wii and most likely have a lot more "hardcore" gamers the series should and already have sold better than the past. Apparently, Nintendo had to up production for prime remastered to reach the high demands so I guess that's a good sign

@theglasshalffull6958 Жыл бұрын
Yea, I did forget to mention that in my video which was a huge blunder on my part. But with how critically acclaimed the series is I would like to think that Nintendo knows how dedicated the metroid fanbase is and will keep giving us what we want despite the "lackluster" sales. Plus Nintendo already had the integrity of rebooting prime 4, I think that goes to show how much they care about a good metroid product rather than just release something shitty and be done with it
@corey2232 Жыл бұрын
Here's my biggest fear - Nintendo went too long & missed the ideal time hit prime Switch popularity with MP4. Switch has already slowed down quite a bit, momentum has steadily shifted towards next gen systems (now current gen), Switch tech was already outdated years ago, and we still don't even have a release window for Prime 4 (meaning it could still be a year away for all we know). By then, Switch could be an afterthought to all but the most dedicated fans. The window for massive sales has already passed, even if it does sell great. Also, even if it becomes a cross gen title with the Switch successor, it will then be limited by the small/nonexistent install base. I'm not saying Prime 4 won't sell 3 million+ copies, only that 2 years ago it may have hit 5 million+ copies easy.
@theglasshalffull6958 Жыл бұрын
Yea I could definitely see what you mean by the switch already slowing down a bit by the time prime 4 comes out. Since the future of Nintendo is so ambiguous I personally think Nintendo should opt to release prime 4 on both the switch AND whatever the next Nintendo console turns out to be. That way it gets that breath of the wild treatment and can be experienced high off the release of a new console and still be experienced by the switch which already has a huge install base
@TekDoug Жыл бұрын
As a long time fan (23 years old and I’ve been playing since prime 1 and GBA games) I think the main reason Metroid failed to catch on is the the genre itself failed to catch on until the indie scene. Castlevania was in a similar boat actually. The Metroid style games were also critically acclaimed but they too sold poorly. Now take Metroid dread and prime remastered. Both released on a system and a post indie scene craze era and they are selling like crazy. Despite how well reviewed the Metroidvania genre was it really didn’t escape its niche following until recently.

@The Glass Half Full iirc, the reason they restarted development of Prime 4 was because Bandai Namco had split up development for 2 studios, one of which was a brand new group that was yet untested. The two studios were independently working on parts of the game, and when they tried to smash the code together into 1 game, it just didn't work. I don't have any insider information, but from what was insinuated, it was literally unplayable, as in, the code didn't work well together, and when they finally got a playable game after working on getting the game together, it was a buggy mess. It was during this point in time that Retro sent in a "Demo" using their new engine to show Nintendo what they could achieve, and judging from both the Demo and the quality of their prior success, Nintendo likely okayed them, and fired Bandai's ass. (Bandai has some good devs tho, no flame)

I think the Metroid Prime Remaster came out alone cause Nintendo realizes that when collections are released, people tend to not actually play the full collections but just dabble in one or 2 of the games on them typically and don't really become invested into the series unless they're already hardcore gamers who want to get into a series they've heard about but not played. Releasing a single game is less intimidating and less pressure to more casual gamers and people won't feel like they need to play all of them in order or get through the whole trilogy before 4 comes out, burning themselves out on the franchise. Collections are easy money from existing fans and curious gamers, but standalone releases have a much better chance of capturing more mass appeal, I think

I think Nintendo should fully embrace the maturity of Metroid's subject matter, and just start making them with the intention of being Rated M, or at the very least the Prime games should. The Prime games came remarkably close to it, but always *just* skirted the line. In terms of feel, Metroid strikes a far different chord than many other of their IPs. Embrace the atmospheric horror completely. I don't know if it would help sales, but I think it would definitely help break the perception of Nintendo only making "kid's games", even though I would argue that hasn't been the case since... forever.

It's really simple as to why Metroid isn't as popular as other series. It's just not fun to many people. More than most Nintendo series, Metroid is a series that just doesn't appeal to everyone (including myself). I doesn't matter how well the games are designed, if you aren't a Metroid fan, you aren't a Metroid fan
@theglasshalffull6958 Жыл бұрын
Well I guess that is true but can't that be said for any type of video game ever? Like take exactly what you just said but replace every metroid with Pokemon. A lot of people don't like/hate Pokemon but it doesn't stop the series from selling like crazy for every single release.

Exactly! It’s long overdue for Metroid to be at the top of the pillar IP was (despite some own the sales) so we gotta hope that the series will now continue to do good!

Nintendo realized after reviving *two* franchises from the JRPG genre such as Fire Emblem and Xenoblade (Xeno series). Why not reviving niche dying franchises aren’t JRPGs like Metroid?
@theglasshalffull6958 Жыл бұрын
Well it's probably the Japan fanbase that was a huge contributor for fire emblem and Xenoblade but it might be too big of a risk in their eyes. It's a shame though because I would love a F-Zero or punch-out revivial

As a long time Metroid fan since the 1980's it's difficult being being a fan of the series. In 1994 Super Metroid left me foaming at the mouth for more and Nintendo just skipped the entire n64 gen. I didn't like the evolution of the series with Prime. Going from 2d to 3d was rough. I didn't take to it at first. Over time I kept going back to Prime and the more I played it the more I liked it. Prime 2 is my personal favorite of the series. I was in my 20's when Pokemon came out and it was baby shit to me and still is.

@@theglasshalffull6958 Hell, no. I remember playing Metroid Prime when it came out, and it really struck me as an action/adventure game more than a shooter. You don't have to shoot everything to proceed, you can just move past the monsters and head to your goal. The opening of Metroid prime 3 was the most 'space marine' the series got in the trilogy and it really did feel like they were trying to make metroid more like Halo. Fortunately after the first big Ridley fight and when Dark Samus drops the other shoe, the story went quickly back to it's metroidvania roots. The people who made metroid prime knew it was an adventure game first and a first person shooter second. Adventure was the picture, FPS was just the frame. I hope Metroid prime 4 won't see the series embrace the boilerplate war shooter format. But...If they leaned more into boomer shooters, arenas filled with a lot of aggressive, weak enemies guarding bigger bruisers that you can cut through with fast maneuvering and super weapons? I wouldn't mind that too much. Just don't lose that core of exploration that gives the series its' spark.
@theglasshalffull6958 Жыл бұрын
Well then I don't think you have anything to worry about. The game has been in production for so long and it already had to restart production once because the original one "didn't reach the quality of the original trilogy" so I feel like Nintendo knows not to change up the core gameplay too much. Interested to see if they are gonna change up the core gameplay at all though
@FynnFTW Жыл бұрын
Nintendo is really the last AAA-Developer who cares about there Games so much they just cancle it and restart it. While other just remake the same games for decades with little to no chance or change it up in a way nobody wanted it to be and ruining the francise forever.

As a huge Nintendo fan I don’t wanna say that Nintendo is unlike any other AAA developer when they’ve made the same shitty business practices in the past (ex: Mario 3D all stars) but it is nice to see them acknowledge the diehard fan base of Metroid and not disappoint their fans with a long awaited release

I was there when Super Metroid topped the charts on the SNES. I was there when Metroid Prime released, and aside from the sales chart, my friends were just as enamored with Prime as they were with Halo. On the other hand I was on a Mario and Madden binge, but from word of mouth in the early 2000's it seemed like Metroid ruled the world. I of course was statistically wrong. Amidst this Metroid world my friends were hyping I hadn't played any Metroid games for myself. Along comes Metroid Prime remastered. My childhood is upset that I didn't play this game sooner cause wow, I'm a dumb*ss, this f*****g game is great!! Bring on more Metroid!
