Regarding Meta Ridley's second phase, ANY moment it opens its mouth is an opportunity to shoot. Some are hard than others, but my favorite is when Meta Ridley is getting ready to charge at you. If you time a Plasma beam Charge just right, it will flinch Ridley instead. The timing is Slightly preemptive, for me at least, but once it clicks, IT CLICKS!
@BradTheDead

This. The fight is a lot quicker when you realize that the opportunities to attack/stagger him are actually pretty frequent. That stomp attack he does, for example? No need to wait it out: just shoot a charged plasma shot (or a super missile/ice spreader blast if you can time it) when he opens his mouth right before he leaps up.

I personally liked the artefact hunt. Reading the clues, figuring out where to go and then finding them there was pretty satisfying for me. Shows a little of Samus' detective side too which I appreciate.

You got it right when you said the game was "like Zelda". Even when it was new, around 2002, I remember friends arguing about Metroid Prime vs Halo, which one was the better game. And I specifically remember pointing out that Metroid was more like Zelda than Halo, minus the towns and NPCs. My point was that comparing Metroid to Halo was like comparing apples and bananas

Megaman in any flavor is a better comparison. Take away their title and what makes their existence tick (organic and robotic life), and they are exactly the same.

@@wiffmastermase Gameplay wise? I don't really see the comparison between Metroid and Megaman except that they both have arm canons... Metroid is a big open map with lots of backtracking, Megaman are individual levels that you start from the beginning, beat the level, then the level is done and you don't go there again 🤷‍♂ ..or did you mean something else? Maybe I didn't get what you meant.

A few games that have taken inspiration from Metroid Prime are Batman Arkham Asylum, Jedi Fallen Order, and Supraland. Some people will say Dark Souls, but I think that's mostly just because of the map design.

The sequels should address most of the nitpicks you had with Prime. While all 3 Prime games have the toppest-tier of art design, I would argue that Prime 2 and especially 3 are peerless for the consoles they were created for. 3 has insane levels of detail and beauty for an under-powered Wii game, look around every room - you will always see new things and textures and detailed patterns, it is so impressive.

There are so many amazing things about this game, so many lessons that gaming as a whole should have learned from it but didn't. It still has my favorite narrative conveyance of any video game ever made. All of the narrative content is 100% optional, it never intrudes on the gameplay experience, accessing it involves gameplay functions and can give information that's actually relevant to the player, and the player experiences the narrative in the same way that Samus herself does: through information gathered by the scan visor and first-hand exploration and experience. It's a uniquely immersive mode of storytelling that works perfectly for a medium defined by agency and interactivity like video games.

Larger pool of reviewers nowadays with a wider range of takes. Plus, evaluating the game's design and gameplay in 2023 compared to 2002 does reveal a few more rough edges than before, so the reviews aren't as consistently 10/10 like the original. It's still stellar, and the Remastered version is the definitive way to play IMO, but as the other reply noted it's rare that an older game appreciates in review scores over time.

There were huge portions of the game where i was totally immersed and having a great time, and also giant portions where it was a slog and one of the most boring and tedious games I've ever had to wade through. The long section where you can't save and all those tough enemies and minibosses stand in your way right at the end of it (Phazon Mines) and the final boss fight, not to mention all the running back and forth through the same areas with minimal shortcuts

I agree and I ended up quitting the game about halfway through. It just didn’t pull in after that point and having a limited amount of time I had to find games that I actually enjoyed more. I ended up turning to dark souls and Elden Ring, and have not regretted it.

Given the popularity of Metroid Prime, I don't understand why no one wants have a go at making one. There's a huge audience hungering for it.

The Puzzle like bosses are a huge improvement in Prime 2. One of the peak metroid games. Although prime 2 is more brutal than prime. Twice it locks you off from a save point before a boss making you redo 10-20 minutes of progress if you die. So just be prepared. If Metroid Prime is super mario bros, then prime 2 is the lost levels. A true challenge for those looking for it.

I definitely agree with the gripe about the map, It would've been really helpful if they had added a custom marker system to aid in remembering collectibles for later. Literal last thing I picked up.

@@chozochiefxiii3298 I think so, but that depends on what you're into Metroid for. JttSP has a lot of exploration, scanning and collectibles, but fewer weapons and less of a focus on combat (though I thought some of the boss battles were amazing). The tone of the game is very different, with a heavy focus on humor and satire. The writing has more in common with Borderlands than Metroid. The biggest flaw the game has is a lack of a map. Overall I had a great time with it, and it kinda sucks that it went unnoticed by most gamers.

To answer everyone here why there wasn't an escape sequence at the end of the game: Metroid Prime had a VERY difficult development cycle. There was insane levels of crunch and the working environment wasn't ideal by any means. What that means is that they ran out of time to be able to make an escape sequence at the end. Retro wanted to do one, they just didn't have enough time. So that's why the end feels a bit abrupt.

The backtracking with no fast travel points was annoying, not being able to skip cutscenes is a small QoL update that could've been added (I experienced this a lot fighting Ridley at the end), and dude the artifact fetch quest at the end of the game is very easy to miss at the beginning. Skipping cutscenes is something you can do once you finish the game, but yeah thats just a reflection of this game being a product of its time.
