Metroid Prime is a first-person action-adventure video game developed by Retro Studios and Nintendo for the GameCube video game console. It was released in North America on November 17, 2002, and in Japan and Europe the following year. Metroid Prime is the fifth main installment in the Metroid series, and the first Metroid game to use 3D computer graphics. Because exploration takes precedence over combat, Nintendo classifies the game as a first-person adventure rather than a first-person shooter. On the same day as its North American release, Nintendo also released the Game Boy Advance game Metroid Fusion, marking the return of the Metroid series after an eight-year hiatus following Super Metroid (1994).
Metroid Prime is the first of the three-part Prime storyline, which takes place between the original Metroid and Metroid II: Return of Samus. Like previous games in the series, Metroid Prime has a science fiction setting in which players control the bounty hunter Samus Aran. The story follows Samus as she battles the Space Pirates and their biological experiments on the planet Tallon IV. The game was a collaboration between Retro's staff in Austin, Texas, and Japanese Nintendo employees, including producer Shigeru Miyamoto, who suggested the project after visiting Retro's headquarters in 2000.
The game garnered critical praise and commercial success, selling more than a million units in North America alone. It won a number of Game of the Year awards, and it is considered by many critics and gamers to be one of the greatest video games ever made, remaining one of the highest-rated games on Metacritic. In 2009, an enhanced version was released for the Wii as a standalone game in Japan, and as part of the Metroid Prime Trilogy compilation internationally.

You know, I think Metroid Prime did the whole "learn about the story through your environment" thing long before Dark Souls did. And also yes, I too will never tire of that Phendrana drifts track. Never ever.

Seeing and hearing people still speak highly of Metroid Prime warms my heart. I will never forget that moment when arriving at Tallon IV after the escape sequece of the frigate for the first time, I started to notice a distinct sound in the background that filled my curiosity bar...... It was a remixed tune of Brinstar from the NES Metroid..... A tidal wave of nostalgia hit me so hard as I recognised the tune immediately. I stood there for a few minutes in awe appreciating the tune while taking in the atmosphere and grasping how amazing it was to look up to the sky while watching rain drops fall onto Samus' visor. It was bliss. One of my most cherised gaming memories.

The amount of thought that went into the lore and scannable items is amazing. Detailed images of enemies and their anatomy and the writing that went into their scans was so cool to me. Made it seem so believable. The dev team must have had researched so much actual biological and physiological things for inspiration. I forgot what it's called but the codex where all your scans are saved for future reference is simply gold. That, plus all the great little details made this game so enjoyable and never feel stale or boring. PS, another cool detail: when you rapid fire the power beam for more than about 5 seconds and then stop, you see haze come off the tip of the blaster from the heat of firing so many shots in rapid succession. Brilliant.

One of the big things that I can agree with Miyamoto was that he did not like MP being called a first person shooter game. He instead wanted it to be called a first person adventure game (with shooter elements) and I think that's one of the key things to have for a very successful first person Metroid game.

From what I've heard and read, a lot of Metroid fans did not think like you and thought very differently. A lot of the fanbase was worried that it would turn into another FPS and trying to cash in on the Halo craze so much so that the first showing of the MP trailer was booed massively. When the game came out everyone was so surprised that the game is so excellent that for a lot of reviewers, it was their favorite game of the year and probably of all time. It surprised me to read all of this since I love the game so much, and reading that people were fearful and nervous of MP being a bad FPS puzzled me as well.
@LOUDcarBOMB
@LOUDcarBOMB 4 жыл бұрын
@Christopher Simon I've only read about this since I had dial-up Internet (didn't know of gaming forums and of E3/etc.) and no cable/satellite TV in the early 2000s. When MP got revealed at E3 2001, there was a serious amount of booing of it (I can understand why when seeing the first trailer) and it was designed as a 3rd person shooter ala Other M. A serious amount of people in forums thought Ninty was cashing in on the craze of Halo 1, Quake, Doom, etc. and ruining Metroid by making it a FPS (though it's more accurate to say first person adventure with shooting).
@LOUDcarBOMB
@LOUDcarBOMB 4 жыл бұрын
When it got released, everyone was extremely surprised at how amazing of a game it is and didn't take any big trendy FPS elements of the time. People took back the bad stuff they said about Metroid Prime and replaced it holy praise when they got to play it. Gggman showed it really impressively (for any and all games) ranks in in the Top 15 Best Rated Metacritic Games by Metascore and Userscore of All Time.

@UC13U0rYa4JtgfnsH35xo7dA kinda disagree on Odyssey. It's a great game at its heart but it has a ton of filler and all the content is spread out so much I never felt compelled to get all the moons whereas anytime I playthrough Mario 64 I always get all the stars. For BoTW , I think it's just preference. I love that and OoT for different reasons. Ocarina is more focused and has better storytelling, but BoTW exploration and gameplay are way more fun. But I'm hoping the next Metroid can make a leap like they did with BoTW to where it feels super fresh but still like the same series at its roots.

Metroid on the NES was the game that made me WANT to game. Just seeing it in the Nintendo commercials, something about it drew me to it, and when my uncle finally bought an NES, Metroid was one of the games he bought with it. I was obsessed. Back in the day I played it so much that for years and years I could complete a run in under 2.5 hours and get the "best ending". I think I actually pre-ordered Super Metroid, meaning I went to the game store in the mall and plunked down 50-60$ or whatever months in advance for them to hold a copy for me when it released. I love Metroid, and the Prime series was...well, I love it now, but back then it was difficult to accept the difference between the seemingly perfect side scroller/adventure and a FPS. Nintendo/Retro did a fantastic job, though, and your video has made me start scouring eBay for some copies of the trilogy so I can fire up the ol' emulator and give them a go. Thanks!

Fun fact about the "Phenandra" Drifts music: A lot of the notes used for percussion are the sounds of large ice sheets cracking. I took an Alaskan cruise in 2018, we went through an ice fjord, and I got to actually hear these sounds live, echoing across the distance. It was marvelous. EDIT: One thing about those late-game Fission Metroids that are color coded: THEY'RE ALL WEAK TO POWER BOMBS, NO DISCRIMINATION, ANNIHILATION FOR ALL!!

I loved this game as a kid and in the 18 years I've lived, never finished it. Hell, I remember not even knowing what a Metroid was when I just saw it lying down with other games we had for our GameCube when I was a kid. I called it a T rated basketball game based off the disc alone, and I remember just playing that opening section over and over again. There's just something wonderful about getting off of the ship and getting to fight the Parasite Queen at the center of some space frigate that I feel many games don't get right.

Fun Fact: In the original Japanese version of Metroid the "Varia Suit" was called the "Barrier Suit." When the original game was being localized into English, the translator incorrectly interpreted the Japanese characters "Ba-ri-a" as "Va-ri-a" hence the name change. Since the name Varia sounded cool though, the name has pretty much stuck ever since.

This game is top shelf quality. Yes!!!! to everything you said about the presentation; I remember being in awe with how the water effects on the helmet HUD dripped down and always loved seeing Samus's face reflecting on the visor after beaming a few enemies in a dark area. It was amazing how a purple lunch box was able to give such a great, smooth experience. I do feel that this game should be experienced at least once with the GameCube controller, i do have the Wii trilogy and though the motion controls do make shooting and aiming better, but the way you select different beam types didn't translate well with the Wii-mote.

Funny thing, I recommended this game for years to a grumpy friend who worships Sony and classic PS1/Ps2 era. Just finished it: turns out he thought the game was "overhyped trash" on every level with a terrible control scheme, repettive gameplay and boring enviroments and music and way too easy all around. He also claims the graphics were overhyped for years with 1 or 2 decent effects at best. Well, he just finished MP 2 Echoes too this past week and claims it is miles better with a much more compelling world layout and gameplay (also he is raving about the soundtrack). He is starting MP 3 Corruption this week, I should brace myself for the shitstorm of "nintendoWiibabygame" complaints. It is beyond me, really.

Me personally I love all the Metroid Prime games, it’s one of my favorite trilogies, but to me each Prime just got better and better. I have my gripes with each one and I absolutely HATE the fact you can’t switch beams in MP3 because they combined them all, but nevertheless not a single game is bad and they each improve in their own unique way. Metroid Prime 2: Echos seems to definitely be the most controversial one among fans and I absolutely get why with the whole light & dark world aspect, which yes can absolutely be annoying, but I can’t help but appreciate the concept and I still stand by the fact that I think it’s brilliant level and environmental design. It definitely took inspiration from the Legend of Zelda: A Link to The Past, of that I have no doubt in mind because just when you defeat Aghahim the big bad guy and thought the game was over, the game is like nah sike bitch you’re only halfway done as you now enter The Dark world, which is a much darker more twisted version of the world of Hyrule you thought you knew. This in turn allows you to re-explore some of the same locations you’ve already been to that look ENTIRELY different and allow you to discover new areas, new dungeons, and new hidden secrets. MP2 took this same concept but instead allow you to willingly travel back and forth between the light and dark world as much as you please, provided you have the necessary upgrades to survive such a inhospitable environment, and have you put together a complex puzzle of how in the hell you’re supposed to traverse these areas and where you have to be in a certain light or dark section to unlock or access a room. Can it be tedious and annoying, absolutely, but it’s fun, it’s engaging, and it keeps you thinking. Your brain never stops churning, thinking, “how in the fuck do I get over there, where in the unholy hell do I go, Jesus Christ how do I kill this bastard”. MP2 not only immersed me into its world, but it also made me give a shit, it kept me thinking when I came across a difficult puzzle, and it kept me on my toes, all of which I can absolutely appreciate. That said Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is my favorite. I could explain why but I doubt anyone cares to read it. All I’ll say is that with MP3 I’ve never felt so completely immersed in a video game. When I’m playing MP3 with motion controls by pulling levers, flipping switches, touching key cards, or ripping off enemy shields, I legitimately feel like I’m there and it’s fucking awesome.

I've been playing Prime 1 since I was a kid, and I actually agree with your friend that Prime 2 is the better game. I used to be a Metroid Prime 1 fanboy until around last year when I gave Prime 2 a fair shot after finding a Gamecube copy. The world in Prime 2 might not be as colorful as Prime 1, but it's so much more interconnected and better designed for backtracking. Even during my first playthrough of Prime 1, I never liked that when I got to Phendrana Drifts and needed the Space Jump that I had to backtrack through the Magmoor Caverns to the start of the game, just to go all the way back to Phendrana Drifts through the Magmoor Caverns. In Prime 2 though, I can almost guarentee that you can find a direct elevator to the area you need to go to from the current area you're in. It may not be as organic for the world to be designed like this, but it makes for much better pacing that doesn't make me want to put the game down and come back to it later.

Metroid Prime is so great because its space settting - and even its FPSness - are merely incidental. It's less scifi, more Banjo Kazooie, itself a superb Alice in Wonderland 'curiouser and curiouser' type game. Turning into the morph ball and back is essentially like Alice choosing Eat Me or Drink Me, being played to the music of the gods. The level design and music are SO great. It's like I'm playing Tomb Raider if God was the lead designer. To make a not massively scifi fan fall in love with your game means that it must tap in to more earthly concerns- and it does. Fire, earth, sand, ice , snow, and water all feel like NOSTALGIC physical comforts or immersions, in both reality and previous games (not least Mario games), rather than other worldly just for the sake of being other worldly. It's something I don't think any other Metroid game has understood or gone for. It's not ambient alienness that made it genius - it's the grandeur and small moments of being a human in a real life world that doesn't know how, why, or what to explore in the hidden, forgotten, the past, the dying or dead. It's ghostly archeology on your own at a party that already mostly ended. It is that tragedy of others, of the passage of time itself, and of yourself, that is a magic triangle that the greatest philosophers would - or should - find spellbindingly unsolveable.

Most people never talk about how backtracking works in this game. It's very much one path. Usually when you go to get a power up, you go through one path. Then to get another power up, you have to go back through the same path, then find a new path. That can get very tedious. People might say it is part of the genre. I would say that other games do this better by adding new shortcuts. When you get the powerup, a new shortcut appears. Letting you quickly go from area to area. Super metroid does this and metroid prime 3 sort of does this. But metroid prime 3 wants to be a limear shooter and it shows. With the shortcuts being one way and not two way

The game came out in 2001 man. Back then every adventure game had tedious backtracking. Really hope they bring back the speed booster in Prime 4, running and flying around in 1st person... would also make the backtracking more fun if you can just skate through the map at lightning speed.

At the very least in Prime 1, the areas in Tallon 4 are more open ended. There are multiple paths that can lead yiu to an shortcut that you don't have to travel back in an normal & longer distance. For example. After getting the Plasma Beam in Magmoor Cavern, u think you would travel back to Tallon Overworld & through Phazon Mines in an normal route that you came back from. But in an room in part of Magmoor Cavern where you climb up to get the Plasma Beam, you head to the other path where before heading to an elevator takes you to the back of Phendrana Drift where after u beaten Thardus, there's another breach of path that takes you to the other side of Phazon Mines that leads an shortcut. But the path to it is block. So u have to use an Power Bomb to get across there. It makes traveling alot faster. Granted, you have an option to do whatever you want to go & don't forget that u also have to collect Chozo Artifact to reach to the Impact Crater. In which luckily there optional to get them as long as you get an upgrade that requires you to get the artifacts during your lourney. After getting the Plasma Beam, I always get the rest of the Chozo Artifacts first before heading back to the Phazon Mines & there's only one artifact that I hadn't gotten that requires to upgrade Samus's suit to get it. Which I need an Phazon Suit, which luckily isn't that far away & it's only 3 or 4 rooms back after getting it from Omega Pirate. And after getting the final artifact, I head straight to Impact Crater.

In Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, there are "Kinetic Orb Cannons" which Samus can shoot out from when in morphball form. Additionally, a glowing orb of energy can be seen inside the morphball shell. So, you can deduce that she forward flips so fast that she turns into pure kinetic energy held together by heavy plating of the morphball. Hence why when the Space Pirates tried to recreate the morphball technology, they failed because they did it completely opposite of how it actually works.

I'm actually surprised you went ahead and reviewed this game, seeing as it's not a traditional FPS. And I'm glad to see that MP has stood the test of time nicely. Also that you also pointed out the nature of it: getting games on the 90s - 2000s used to be a harder thing before, so having longer games with plenty of content was often hit or miss but kept you entertained while waiting for your next purchase. MP was also part of this. I remember liking Metroid Prime a lot, but I will go ahead and say that the latter games don't live up to the expectations of Prime 1. I don't think I ever finished 2 due the confusing nature of it and 3 was just too lineal and oversimplified. Or so I remember them.

Little tip about the mutated Metroids, they are indeed immune to all beams except one, but they are all super vulnerable to power bombs! Do not waste time: avoid the fight, and if you get caught, morphball and powerbomb instantly, most of the time it kills all of them in one bomb. Problem solved. ;) In fact most ennemies in this game have a "normal" way to be killed and a "super effective" one. This is just one of many exemples.
