I was born and raised in America but my parents are Taiwanese and so I’ve gone to Taipei numerous times over the years: every 1.5-2.5 years, starting with my first trip for my grandparents to see me at 5 months old. The oldest metro map I remember was from 2005 when I was actually finally old enough to understand and remember them, and since then every time we go back, we always like to see how the metro map has changed, but over the years I’ve forgotten how it looked like at certain times. This video has definitely brought back memories. Thank you!

Update October 2022: the extension of the red line beyond Xiangshan apparently won't be complete until late 2023. Keelung is also planning to build a metro that will connect to both blue lines. And in Taoyuan, there is an orange and a brown line planned and the green is also expected to loop around to the end of the purple line.

They should make the taoyuan line just continue to Keelung

Awesome animation thanks. I'll never forget the Bannan line opening in 1999. I moved to Taipei in 1998 and before that line opened I had to take either the bus, trainc taxi or ride my scooter everywhere. I was so excited when I could start taking a Jieyun MRT.

Revising : (sorry for my poor English) 0:17 - The Official Traditional Chinese name of Taipei Zoo station should be 動物園 (Zoo), without the 臺北 (Taipei) word. 0:25 - The English name of Tamsui station in 1997 should be Tamshui, they change the name to Danshui in 2003 first and then change it to Tamsui in 2011, while its Chinese name remains the same. 1:41 - When Neihu Line (內湖線) opened in 2009, they abbreviated Muzha-Neihu Line as "Zha-hu Line" (柵湖線). However some people think the abbrieviation to be inelegant due to its pronouncement which is same as a term in mahjong which means "Fake it to win the game". They change the official name to Wenhu Line (文湖線) at last. Actually this video includes three different systems of subway/metro, which consists Taipei Metro (台北捷運), New Taipei Metro (新北捷運), and Taoyuan Metro (桃園捷運). They are owned and operated by three different city but are all situated in Greater Taipei Area (includes Taipei, Xinbei, Keelung, Taoyuan).

Thanks for the info! Yes! Romanization of almost all station names (not just Tamsui) changed throughout years so I struggled a little to figure out which stations are which (e.g. Hsin Peitou→Xinbeitou, Chichang→Qizhang, Hsintien→Xindian etc.)
@hzpj3 жыл бұрын
@@MetroLiner I prefer the original romanization plan, I think its pronunciation is closer to English! (Taiwanese here, thanks for making this amazing video!)
@hzpj3 жыл бұрын
@GaberPlaysGamep “Taipei, Xinbei, Keelung, Taoyuan” in the last line of the text should be “Taipei, New Taipei, Keelung, Taoyuan”. The official name of 新北 is “New Taipei” instead of “Xinbei” (hanyu pinyin) or “Hsinpei” (wade-giles)
@maxxiong2 жыл бұрын
@@hzpj TBH one could also argue on the contrary that the old system creates ambiguities, where your example Chichang can be misread completely as pinyin. Pinyin does have the issue though of iu and ui getting mispronounced all the time.

Curious about what do you think of the metro lines' naming scheme? Do you like pure words like this and MTR (东铁线), or like pure digit/word like most metro system (1,2,3...A.B.C), or like something mixed like Beijing subway of using both (1,2,3...S1...昌平线...)?
@Lumpy9702533 жыл бұрын
Actually we also named it simply by use initial of the colors: e.g. Wenhu Line is BR for brown. Bannan Line is BL for blue. Tamsui-Xinyi Line is R for red. Danhai LRT is V because of vermilion. And passengers can find them easily in the entrances, stations, and platforms.
@MetroLiner3 жыл бұрын
I think for tourists/visitors number/alphabet system is easier to follow, but for locals, lines with location name are more easy to understand.
@fhs78383 жыл бұрын
@@Lumpy970253 I know this, it also being used in Taipei. But for a system like Beijing subway, with 24 lines, and already using all kinds of green/blue/pink... Even colors are not enough....
@fhs78383 жыл бұрын
@@MetroLiner The thing is, some lines is extending far into city center, making it serving not purely its said place. Also some "tragedy" like 1-Batong (thorough operation just started recently), 4-Daxing line, that train runs thoroughly, no need to change, but it operate as "separate" lines. Causing passengers confused. Also the most disturbing line "Subway line S1" Maglev train, it use the original S1 suburban train plane (from S-Bahn naming scheme), but almost at same year we have another S1 in a real commuter rail runs by national rails... Beijing has 4 S-train lines, though not convenient to use.
@Lumpy9702533 жыл бұрын
@@fhs7838 It was proposed it uses numbers to represent these lines at one time in 2014, but has not been adopted. I don't know the reason tho, probably we'll run out of the color someday xD
