@@dashx1103Do you know how to do math? Look at the salary per year. What the Mets offered Alonso is more than what Nimmo gets per year. When Nimmo signed the contract he had just had a 3.2 WAR and a 5.1 WAR season. He was also 29 years old, more athletic than Alonso and plays a position that is more valuable. Alonso is coming off a 3.2 WAR and 2.6 WAR season, he’s been declining every season, and he’s an unathletic player playing a non premium position.
@dashx110316 күн бұрын
@@TheKilrmy Of course I can do math. And I don't know that there is any reason to be insulting here. But that it what it is. Players seek security. When a guy gets an 8-year contract, it is generally about a bottom line amount. Baseball contracts are fully guaranteed. So saying that Pete was offered a higher AAV than Nimmo doesn't really move the needle. You know this. The "high AAV" component of a short-term contract is always just a bone thrown to a player that doesn't get the years he wants. Compare stats? Sure. Last year, Pete had a higher WAR than Nimmo. Pete had a higher BA than Nimmo. Pete had a higher OBP than Nimmo. Pete had a higher OPS than Nimmo. Pete had a higher OPS+ than Nimmo. To Nimmo's credit, he had two more RBIs than Pete. So, what does this tell us? I'm not sure honestly. Don't know where you are going with this. And Pete has not been "declining every season." That is just false. In his 4th season, he had some of his best numbers ever, including his best RBI total. He also had his highest batting average, his second highest OBP, and his second highest OPS. On top of that, Pete has been an iron man. Unlike Nimmo who has missed time in seasons past, Pete has never played fewer than 152 games in a full season. So, yeah, I can do math. And I think given all the circumstances the Pete/Boras offer of 3 / $93 mil is more than acceptable. And fans who want to cut off their noses to spite their faces don't resonate much with me. I don't care about whether people are upset over negotiations. I don't care if people want to stick it to Boras or to Pete. I want the Mets to put the best team they can on the field. The Mets wanted Pete for 3 years, they made that offer, .. I'd rather he get paid over 3 years than have Brett Baty in the lineup every day from the start of the coming season. I'm just a Mets fan, and I want the Mets to be as good as possible. Period.

I think part of looking internally means is that they have a logjam of guys coming up who play around the infield in particular, and having first base open means there's a lot of incentive for people to step up. Moving Vientos over opens up third base for Baty and Mauricio to play more. If Mauricio winds up at third, it give more of an opening for Acuna to backup or take over for McNeil at second. If none of this is working out, the bat they need to trade for could just as easily come from a midseason trade as it could now.

If it means so much to certain Met fans. Second, there is no way you’re going to pay Pete more than Freeman or Olson! I don’t see any team bidding for Pete! The market has spoken! And since Alonso returning to the Mets is far worse than that combination, why would the Mets EVER want him back??

I’m frustrated by this discussion in some ways. Let’s not conflate issues … this was NOT Pete demanding more than a 3 year contract, which was implied here a few times. This wasn’t about years, this was just about MONEY. Jack saying that “we need to trust Stearns” and “he didn’t think Pete is worth more than that 3 year contract” fundamentally misrepresents the issue. The other thing is Jerry’s statement that the money saved on Pete frees dollars up for other guys also fundamentally misrepresents the situation. There is no salary cap in MLB. Any budget the Mets have is self imposed. And, in connection with this, people need to wrap their heads around just how much money $25 billion actually is. A friend put it to me this way, and I’ve stolen this metaphor from him: if Cohen spends $1 billion, including luxury tax, this season (which he won’t and which will partially be offset by revenue earned anyway) it is less of a hit on his wealth than it would be forme to buy a luxury car this year. Why fans are more concerned about saving money for the richest owner in sports than about putting the best team on the field is baffling to me.
@ajhead744414 күн бұрын
There’s just no guarantee Pete is worth more than what Stearns and co. offered him. Especially for the Mets with three major league ready infielders (although I’m not sure how entirely open I am to watching Brett Baty get time again) who have to play or get moved. With Vientos looking like more of a first baseman then a third baseman (seeing him run the bases can be painful), and Mauricio plus Acuña in the background: there is no real glaring hole in our infield; other teams “need” him more, yet his market is fairly stale so I’m not sure he’s the missing piece for fielding the best team. It’s easy to overlook athletic ability in the sport of baseball, but it was on display in Milwaukee dropping a fly ball on the move, and a vast number of times throughout his career he was almost stumbling/tripping over his feet while backpedaling trying to catch a fly ball. I will say he’s gotten really good at scooping/footwork around the base, but when you take him out of that first base radius it can get ugly. He’s also seemed to age quickly into a three outcome player, which opposes the teams build and philosophy with guys like Lindor, Soto, Nimmo, and Vientos who keep the line moving and run into power rather than look for it. I hope I’m wrong and he gets to a point where the Mets offer is the best one, but my gut tells that the Pete Alonso experience being over is for the best.

@waxpackbriefcase367316 күн бұрын
Stearns so far has signed pitchers that were reclamation projects and the Mets pitching lab deserves much of the credit there. Soto was a Cohen move. Outside of that Stearns signed Iglesias, Winker and Taylor and these guys way over achieved. Remember the Mets wanted to fire sell at the deadline last year. This trust Stearns narrative is ridiculous. I wish the best for Pete.
@dashx110316 күн бұрын
I think Cohen simply insisted on doing whatever was necessary to land Soto. After that, I think Cohen is just relying on Stearns. Like Jerry said: "Stearns is the driver." And I've long said, I trust Stearns. I don't pretend to know more than him ... I definitely don't. But, damn, .. as a fan ... I hate this. The idea that the bottom-line is some kind of Rainman-like cold calculus doesn't sit well with me. People keep talking about "market value." "What is Pete's market value?" And Stearns' determination of that seems to be a line in the sand. But I think it is too detached from everything in baseball OTHER THAN the financial bottom line. I think there should be room for a multi-billionaire owner, who always tells us he's a "fan," to extend something for a home-grown player who is a fan favorite and a great story and who put up huge numbers for the team while never before getting to access "market value." I just don't like this. I guess I'm a romantic about baseball. When it simply becomes nothing more than a "business," it loses something for me. And this is a different situation than if Pete demanded 5 years and the Mets just didn't think he'd fit in their plans for that long. The reporting is clear: both sides were willing to agree on 3 years. The Mets obviously felt Pete would fit in their plans for 3 years. This just came down to money. And that is the most disappointing thing of all. Even if it was just Cohen saying, "hey, Pete ... you set the rookie HR record in a Mets uniform while making less than 1/2 million dollars. In the season after that, you made well less than a million dollars. We want to thank you, honor you, and send a message to all the other players we might seek in FA in the future -- this isn't just business. We take care of our own." I think there is value in that, and the money difference here is like couch cushion change for a guy like Cohen. I think Stearns is being too rigid here. I think he has a very particular idea about how things should be done. And I think unless Cohen tells him otherwise (as with Soto), we just need to get used to the Mets being run like the Brewers. There is something to be said for that. Stearns did more with less in Milwaukee. But I would like the Mets to compete for championships. And I'm skeptical of the current model in that regard. Again, unless Cohen takes charge.
@lauracoover373816 күн бұрын
@dashx1103 I completely agree with you. They paid Soto knowing 150-200M was at huge risk on the back end and now you lowball & hardball Pete over 20M? Ridiculous & very disappointing. Pete was worth just 2.1 fWAR in 2024. Strangely ignored in all this is how Alonso may never have even one more season where he's worth a lineup slot---look how quickly R-R 1Bmen collapse. Also, why would the Mets even offer Alonso 3/69m? He's a 1/2 win upgrade on what every projection system projects Mauricio / Baty / Acuna at 3B to produce in 2025, something right around 1.5 to 2.0 fWAR. Why pay 23m a year for a half win upgrade? No one seems to grasp this: The Mets aren't signing Alonso, if they do sign him---the Mets are signing the UPGRADE Alonso represents over what the Mets will get from moving Vientos to 1B (where he rates to be more valuable than Alonso in 2025 and every year thereafter) and putting Mauricio--Baty-Acuna at 3B for $2m. The best position player on the Mets? In 2021, maybe. In 2019, Pete's rookie year, the year of the juiced ball---Pete was no more valuable in the overall than Squirrel. In 2020 Pete was barely replacement level, in a 6-way tie at 16th through 21st for most WAR on the Mets with the likes of Jake Marisnick. In 2021 Alonso was again less valuable than deGrom in only 93 innings, and 2022-2024 he was worth less than Nimmo and barely worth half the WAR Lindor put up, worse than Lindor every single year. A good player, he was always referred to as a complementary player, never a franchise player or a player a team builds around. In no way is Alonso an 'esteemed power hitter.' Not with a .459 SLG, 40th best in MLB.

Yes he’s been a Met for 6 years but what has he really done but fall short constantly in big moments except of course in his hr against the Brewers.

Lindor has yet to give the Mets a full year. He was garbage for the first 2 months of last season. He hasn't really been close to what's expected of him his whole Mets career. Nimmo is a nice piece, but not carrying a team. Marky V is young. We can't rely on him. Not saying he can't be great. But wouldn't bet on it. With Soto. Idk we'll see. No doubt he'll be a bit bat. But pitchers will just walk him and go after a young Marky V or whoever hits behind him.

Plan B is a 17 year old? That will be great for 2030 while Sasaki pitches this season. Come on Jerry. Plan B isn’t Winker re-sign either. Jesus Christ. Another Stearns apologist. He deserves criticism. He hasn’t adapted to a big market environment. Case in point, he would have done all the same moves if he was brewer still. That is a problem and he would never have agreed to sign Soto for that contract.
