Top 3 Is extremely close, to the point where they might as well all be equal. Leffen and Hbox are also very close, but I think Leffen falls behind just slightly in terms of consistency. Chudat is good, but I still wouldn't put him in top 10. Overall, I think it's very hard to rank the top Melee players in terms of skill. They were all excellent in their own way at their peaks.

Armada is so good that you could make a video about just "Armada" - Armada lowest placing in the last years since 2011 , was 5TH PLACE. 7 STRAIGHT years of not even touching 7th place - Armada is THE BEST doubles players of all time, he won with Android , Mew2king , Leffen and even with Shroomed. - Armada has this insane 4 straight EVO grand finals, this 4 straight GENESIS grand finals and have been in 6 STRAIGHT Summit Grand finals. - Armada has a positive RECORD against ALL players except SilentSpectre. - Armada has been at least TOP 2 since 2009, been Number ONE in 2011, 2012, 2015 , 2016. And if he is not Number one he is at least Number 2. - Since Armada became a god , he have only lost to The 4 Gods , Leffen , Plup , and Swdish Delight. Thats only 7 players. - Finally, Armada one trick is to win tournaments :)

It's hard to see even the possibility of it being challenged unless this game continues for decades. Even if current all time greats go on to have amazing streaks there's still the looming spectre of being behind Armada for the vast majority of their common career. Lastly, fun fact there's a retroactive elo tracking of smash players over time, and even in the end Armada went out on top (not to mention dominating Hbox doing it)

I wouldn't leave out M2K's Frame Bible that pushed the meta 40 years ahead. The impact he had on the way every aspiring pro player approached fights and their mindset was immeasurable. The fact that he placed him above himself, and at 3rd. He also argued that hbox and mango ate tied. The only reason he put mango higher is mangos influence and his ability to dominate on many different characters. I know hbox plays other characters when he needs to, but hes still mostly known for his jigglypuff. I think m2k thinks very highly of him, probably seemed like he didn’t say much about becuz he was trying to explain the top 3 placements

More than playing multiple characters, the important thing is pushing the meta of different characters. Almost all the players in the list have pushed at some points the character they played and almost all top 7 players pushed multiple characters (beside hbox and ken).

@@jijmotorp3079 I think this is a somewhat interesting perspective. I agree that players who innovate more characters have done more for the game, and therefore deserve to place higher. But at the same time, those players generally switched characters because they had difficulty maintaining consistently high results playing with their original characters. Which is why people like Axe and Amsa are such big fan favorites. I think that both sides deserve a lot of credit, and one isn't necessarily better than the other. In every case, being a character specialist means losing to the same people over and over again, but sticking it out and learning how to play around your character's weaknesses until you can overcome them.

For example, ppmd did a lot to marth and falco (especially in the 'eutral game a lot of players now play like him) but i don' t think he was as impactful as axe for pikachu which is only one charac. But innovation, creativity and impact on the scene need to be rewarded. This kind of achievmentd also secure some spots to older players. Those players work hard to get good and win tournaments but, even though they don't win tournaments, the impact and innovation they created through tjeir work wont be forgotten. Anyway my top 20 : 1. Everyone on here is making great points, but I also think that there is something to be said about someone who plays characters that "arent meta" and still wins. Yall know Im talking about puff and Hbox. Especially when EVERYONE literally played his counter match in Fox for years. Even Armada changed. Yes, being good with multiple characters is a great case for your skills. Yes, making your main change the game, and your competition changes to your main, is a great case for your skills. Also, playing a mid-tier character, and never changing, and still winning, even against unfavorable match up, a lot of the time, is also a great case for your skills. Im not saying that Hbox is more accomplished than Armada or Mango, Im just saying that generally he had the more difficult road, and eventually came out the winner over both.

Great list! Armada was the hardest brick wall I'd seen in Smash Bros. To the point where every time I saw someone play him in grand finals, my heart raced too high lol. I was so ecstatic when PPMD won Apex 2015 or when HBox won EVO 2016, truly BECAUSE Armada was such a damn excellent player, he put in so much work and deserves the #1 spot.

Curious why you thought Leffen should have been ranked first in 2015, results wise I think Armada was solidly #1. Pretty sure he had a positive record on everyone, won evo, big house & summit and leffen had much lower lows (got 9th a couple times and armada only finished outside top 3 once). Summer rankings definitely could have seen leffen ranked first though.

Leffen won 4 out of the 5 summer majors in 2015, beat armada at B.E.A.S.T 5, Paragon, WTfox, and FC return and completely dominated his peach to the point that Armada gave up on peach against leffen and went fox. He then lost a 2 out of 3 match at Evo, a tournament where Armada avoided him, Mang0, and most of the other top players besides Hbox. M2k said first half of 2015.

I don’t know where you get the idea that Mang0 has been a consistent top player for about twice as long is Hungrybox. It’s pretty close. Mang0 DOES have a couple years longer, but they’ve both been top players for about 10 years. I recommend you check smash wiki to fact check yourself. Another factor is Hungrybox has been the very slightly better player in the last few years. I think it matters who was most recently better. Hbox has been the number 1 since Armada’s retirement

If we are talking about the best player ever in a given moment, as in the best anyone has ever played at one tournament or set, it is probably either Armada or Mang0. As far as the most dominant extended period of time, then I'd say Armada or Hbox.

KDJ was very good for his time but he did not stay in the scene for very long. Similar for people bringing up Isai. They were very influential and obviously center-pieces in the doc b/c of the role they played in that time period, but neither stayed in Melee's competitive scene like these players did.

Another interesting idea I'd like to see you explore, is who had the POTENTIAL to be among the top 10? e.g., players who had the raw skill but either didn't apply themselves or make a real attempt to climb to the number 1 spot. For example, Isai - if he was motivated, could he have become the undisputed best for his time?

Kinda suprised Isai wasn't on this list since I think a lot of people believe he was better than Ken just didn't try as hard. Isai also was basically the guy to go to if you wanted to win doubles, and there's that clip of Isai actually popping off after winning a 2v1 which was pretty sick

I don't think Hbox has an argument for #2 yet. From late 2010- late 2014, he didn't win a single major. Mang0 has been more consistent throughout his career and has been far more influential. I would also argue that PPMD is over M2K because M2K never won a super major and PPMD has 3 (Apex 2014, 2015, and P5). M2K may have been active longer, but PPMD has done more in his short career than M2k has in his ongoing career.

Armada is the LeBron James of smash. Mango is like Kevin Durant. Hungrybox is Kawhi Leonard. Mew2king is like Kobe. Devoted more to the game and deconstructed melee more than anybody has before. Anyone now who deconstructs melee’s inner workings is all because of m2k and nothing will take that away. Easily 4th. If you’re going by legacy, not just results, easily top 3.
