He's still got potential for sure, but his self-confidence and mental game strongly holds him back, he almost got to winner's finals in Dreamhack 2022 but sour spotted down air against Sfop game 5 and lost because of it. The overall playing field has gotten way better as well, but he could definitely make a return to top level play if he truly wanted to and worked on his mental.

I think he would start out top 35ish and cruise around top 20 level. Unlike Armada, I'm not sure if I believe in M2k's mental game. If M2k got a coach and was very motivated I can see him becoming one of the contenders in the top 8 again (Zain, Mango, Cody, aMSa, Hbox, Plup, Leffen, Jmook). He has all the skill to do so. But practically speaking I would imagine him hitting a wall around Axe, Kodorin, Aklo tier unless he changed things up.

I have some stories from this era of melee. 1. I played Mew2King at a ChuDat biweekly in bracket, and with the Gentleman's Clause we agreed to play with Pokeballs. I won game 2 on FD in his Sheik vs my Zelda when he threw a Pokeball at me, and I reflected it with Nayru's and killed him. And he looks at me and laughs "I forgot she could do that". 2. I teamed with Azen at some throwaway VA local event. He was so drunk he could barely hold the controller and walked around with Marth fsmashing and laughing. We still won teams. 3. Mew2King came down to ChuDat's place in 2007 where I was staying for the summer. He invited me to FCD in Indiana, and I said I couldn't go because I had no money. Jason paid for my ENTIRE TRIP. He paid someone to drive from NJ to VA to pick me up, got another NJ player (WarriorOfZarona) to drive me to Indiana, and then the entire trip in reverse. Whenever people talk about the Golden Age of Melee, it really was.

1. Mango 2. Armada (Interchangeable depending on what you value) 3. Hbox 4. Ken 5. Zain 6. M2k I ranked them this way because even though Retro Ranking's gave M2k #1 in 2008, I personally think 2008 should have gone to Mango, he won the only super major Pound 3 that year and didn't lose a tournament. If you decide to give M2k #1 in 2008, I would probably put him #5 and Mango #2. I put Zain #5 because I do value 2020 as his year despite most of it being online.
@junkmail9299
@junkmail9299 Жыл бұрын
@@scrottiemcnubbs5687 It's arguable. Only because for me Ken had 4 years as #1 even though they were early on and the game hadn't been as developed. Even though I value recent years more, that 4 year stretch hasn't been repeated by any other player. For me, M2k was really ranked #1 only during 2007 until Pound 3. M2k's longevity is amazing and his influence on the game is legendary but he was mostly on the lower end of the top top contenders from 2010 onward. And didn't win enough majors/super majors. Even though I put him #6, I can see an argument for him as high as 4th.

For me M2K was the player I really looked up to in melee. His marth specifically just had this domineering style, this effortless look to how he would delete stocks, all without quite feeling as campy as he definitely was. Fun Fact he is the person with the world record for most tournaments attended lifetime, attending some near 700 tournaments from what I remember. Personally I would put M2K in top 5 all time. He's such a monster and his contributions to the community could be debated larger than his accomplishments as a player, which I always add to a player's 'worth' of discussion of their 'greatness'. I think what hurts his credentials,were his meddling years, where you can debate were partially due to him splitting his time with other smash games. But, like Mango, you have to give him props for being in the game as long as he was.

To me, I just could never respect mamgo, because outside of his melee skill, he embodies all the bad traits of the FGC. Drama stirring, sloppy, lives in his mom's basement, and just overall a bad role model for anyone who wanes the scene to grow. Players like armada, m2k, Valle, kbr, jwong, and streamers like sajam, dood, jmcroft, are all way better reps for the community if you actually want to be respected as a community. If mango is the heart and soul of melee to melee players, it really explains why the smash scene appears so gross to outsideers, because he is.

Easily one of the best. Pioneered a lot of fundamentals you see players especially with Marth. He wrote the book on how to punish spacies that everyone followed until Zain improved it further (I never thought PPMD's punishes on spacies with Marth were as consistent or efficient). Despite this however, when you go back and watch a lot of classic old sets, it's very infuriating to see how much he got away with in the neutral game, and how much of it would be (and was considered at the time) gimmicky. His neutral was more of a 7.5 in a sea of 9-10's (Armada, PPMD, Mango, and Hbox later on) which is why he couldn't be top 3 in the era of the Gods

Meanwhile Mango, who got ranked first, had losses to Ice and PewpewU. The rest of their h2h records that year are pretty similar. Some players would be able to beat Mango or Leffen here and there, but would get smothered by m2k. If they couldn't get by him, there's no way they would get through Armada and Hbox. There were a few lower ranked players that did well against his style and also the occasional lolm2k tourney, but for the most part he was always there to smack aspiring players back down to earth. I always loved seeing m2k do well the most out of any player, and any mango vs m2k set was guaranteed to be a banger.

I don’t think M2K’s proficiency at Brawl can be overstated enough. He wasn’t just the top player, he was untouchable. IIRC he never lost a single set in tournament in Brawl’s first year.

One piece of underrated M2K lore that you left out, and I really wish that you would have touched on: Look up his loser's run at UGC, a late 2016 tournament. He is responsible for THE single greatest loser's run of all time, and had he managed to complete it, this would be the greatest tournament win in the history of Melee. I feel like it never really gets brought up, and it is by far his most impressive accomplishment.
@JeramiJoseph

Oh my god you’re so right. I totally forgot about this! That tournament was unheard of for him to do especially a losers run. M2k had so much good stuff to talk about about. Thank you for pointing this out though!

To me there’s two players that pushed forward Melee. One is HBox, there was a point in history where everyone was trying to beat his Puff and developing techs to do it Armada developed Young Link and perfected Fox. And the other is M2K, he contributed so much in the early stage of Melee to even make it a truly competitive game. There’s no Melee esport scene without him. To me he is top 3. 1. Armada 2. Hungrybox 3. M2K

M2K IS The 4th best Melee player of all time, idc. The man was in the top 8 for 15+ YEARS. He was the brige between Ken and Mang0, two different eras. He was THE one to beat. And the man was number one in both Melee AND Brawl, AT THE SAME TIME. No other player in history has that title. Yeah, Mang0, Hbox and Armada have arguments for best Melee player of all time, but none of them dominated Brawl or placed high any ANY other Smash game. M2K did. He's the Smash GOAT until proven otherwise and I'll die on that hill. I'll never forget seeing his Dashizwiz set back in the 2000s and I didn't even know Smash had a competitive scene at the time (I was an oblivious scrub who played with items lol). Good times...

As someone on the Autism Spectrum, think it's a little weird that you talk about M2K's social difficulties, problems reading other players, and extreme technical dedication to the game without bringing up that he's on the Autism Spectrum. It's an important part to include in his story because it has influenced everything from his dedication to the game to his play style to his offbeat and quirky sense of humor that he's famous for. One common Autism symptom is that we got overstimulated by sensory stimuli very easily. He probably dropped out of sandstorm because of the strobe lights. Those are a killer sensory trigger for people on the spectrum and a lot of us can't handle strobe lights for longer than a few minutes at a time. M2K's difficulties playing while crowds are cheering against him are also probably an Autism thing just as much as they are a psychological thing, because a lot of people on the Autism spectrum struggle greatly with loud noises, and our sensory problems get worse when we're stressed or under pressure. These are just a couple of examples but I really can't stress enough how many times his Autism diagnosis comes up in the varying stories I've heard about M2K.

I really appreciate you bringing this up. Though it’s known and people have been told by him that m2k has autism, he hasn’t stated it publicly I don’t believe. I know he has said publicly in a video that he has a caretaker though. It felt like it wasn’t my place to bring it up since he hasn’t said it to my knowledge. I asked my girlfriend who’s brother has autism and she said it was best I don’t mention it if I can’t find him saying first hand that he has it. I wanted to be as respectful as possible without assuming what he has. I hope this helps 😄

@@JeramiJoseph Interesting enough, I was able to talk a lot with Jason through commenting on one of his twitch streams about his autism because both of us have the same kind of autism, that being Asperger's Syndrome. We talked a ton about how when we're down even the slightest bit, everything just snowballs down hill awfully and how we get extremely in depth and overanalytical about things we enjoy, but have extreme trouble putting any focus into things we don't have interest in. That's probably what makes him my favorite player, not the autism, but how he feels human. He's not some unstoppable, impenetrable force like 2019 and early 2020 Ultimate MKLeo or early smash 4 ZeRo, he's a real person who struggles with emotion, with tilt, who has his demons and who, no matter how hard he fights, he can't overcome them. It's nice to see a storyline where the protagonist isn't unbeatable
@JeramiJoseph
@JeramiJoseph Жыл бұрын
@@typhlosion7872 yeah this was a very awesome response to see. And I wanted to touch on those types of things that he struggled with as a competitor. But it didn’t really feel like my place to say everything, especially since he hasn’t come out on his channel or anything saying he explicitly has Asperger’s. Didn’t want to over step any boundaries. But he really overcame some serious shit and became an amazing competitor. I can’t wait to read his book where I bet will have everything. I also find it so cool you get inspiration from mew2king with your guys similarities. That is so dope to hear
