They’re not exactly the same cuz with music the artists WITH their voice is a brand , they’re a one person brand , their looks , their opinions , their voices .....but with concept art , these artists are not in front of the camera , they do not get the attention , they’re more seen as one of the tools in the big machine , so if this was to be replaced by AI it wouldn’t effect the result much , plus it saves time , so I can see it as a near possibility , it’s sad though cuz I’m also an art student

@@Tarikkb an individual who creates should have their voice and IP protected by the law, and don’t act as if singers aren’t signed with contracts the way creatives sign with companies to make money. Convenience from the AI is just an excuse to generate mediocre stolen content compared to a creative who spent the time to research, build a unique portfolio, and use various mediums to show industries they can cultivate any form of subject dedicated to a client or brand.

From my perspective view, I am a freelance artist which takes lots of commissions. I noticed that my clients started to disappear after the AI trend. So I went to check where they are from my curiosity, In that time I was pretty disappointed that they went to use AI to create their own OC? and they wrote stuff such as "thanks to AI so they don't have to waste money to commission anymore", or invited more friend to use AI....Like Hello? This is not funny, what can I do apart from complaining, Now I just have to work harder to improve my skills and promote my art more and more.

Shit, I was hoping to start commission this year since I just turned adult and felt doing commission is a good thing. While commissions is a hard and difficult at times. Almost all artist started their career doing commissions. AI Art does threaten that. As an artist, I see AI as a sort of tool. But sadly, society just don't see art important even though they love to consume. It is whatever is convenient for them.

I feel like the art community as a whole need to speak up about the impact AI gonna have on the art industry. Seeing how AI art generator can quickly pull up a drawing in a couple of minutes that almost look like a professional art piece, even if it's imperfect with some weird mess up details here and there, can be really discouraging to beginner artists who want to enter the field. It's already evolved significantly in just a couple of years that it's terrifying to think that there's the possibility of AI making it even harder for artists to get jobs and might even outright replacing us at some point in the future.

Art is the idea represented and not just the medium it is subjected to. Yes an artist and an AI can both represent a picture of a bird, but as of yet, only the artist can lead you beyond the picture to portray ideals like freedom by the way the bird spreads it's wings to escape the boundaries of earthen restraints. We have now made art and artists more mainstream and publically visible as the ideas of the individual are easier to express through word translation rather than hand/physical coordination. The era of "gatekeeping" art to the realm of "professionalism" is becoming a thing of the past as people are learning to value ideals over effort. There will always be a niche market or value on outdated methods. People still pay for handmade baskets and blacksmith forged goods over factory automation albeit not as mainstream.

Yeah, it's going to be harder to get into the industry, since AI is usually intended to take over tasks that are seen as mundane or taxing. Yet art is an expressive medium and it resonates with humans due to seeing there's a story or message behind it.

I think AI can possibly create new jobs in the future. Like how we saw with the decline in 2D animation but the rise in 3D. The industry is going to be always changing and improving. While yes it might remove some job opportunities for some artists there will be newer roles that will be created because like you said someone still has to review or modify the AI generated Art. I think it’s cool to draw inspiration from or look at something in a specific perspective because not everyone has a live reference of certain things and google while it has those references it is usually the same ones everyone else uses. With this new integration you can see things and draw from reference. One thing that I don’t think should be allowed is just taking the piece as is and selling it, you have to change it and even then I feel like it still tiptoeing into testy waters. That's the whole point of AI Artists are only needed for style example or for concepts when you just don't have any real life examples of the idea like you can't get photo of a dragon or fairy. Training AI purely from drawings of artists is pretty pointless. But otherwise you can take just few pictures from some artist AI will examine its style and it will be able to convert any picture into the style of that artist.

Ai need to learn some concepts at first like for example "people doing podcast" or "astronaut walking on the moon." or "cowboy riding a horse" it is very unlikely that some specific artist will even draw the moon or tv studio. Artist pictures are only used as style example and then it can draw astronaut riding a horse on the moon in the Picasso style. You don't even need that many pictures from some artist to train AI Just few examples are enough. Same as for human being, maybe a bit more because AI is not that smart as human. And at this day you pretty much get universal AI model with various concepts then you take few pictures from desired artist and perform training on those pictures and then AI can draw anything from that universal model in the style of the artist which you trained it. Or you can take any photography or picture and AI will convert it into the style of that artist

A lot of people miss this issue that even AI art contributes to destroying the middle class. Companies won't hire a group of artists but instead, they will buy a license/subscription from an AI art company that is overflowing with money. It's happening to a lot of different carriers too and people should be more cautious of that. Usually, a cheaper option is a less moral option, I know that the most blame is on companies that are ruling the world but in most cases, we have a choice to support them or not.

this is a no sense, just think a little about it, companies that use art just don't want beatiful pieces of art that you can handle in the wall (unless the company was just about that lmao), those companies want art that serves to the purpose that they want, and that can only be achieved by artists, not by AI, for example, imagine pixar wanting to hire concept artists for creating characters for their new movie but they use a subscription for an AI instead, so now what?, first, you still need the idea behind the character to insert it in the AI (the prompt), this need to be done by an artist that knows what will work well with the idea of the movie, then it is generated, OK, so now what? it is a beatiful image, but does it really match the idea of the movie?, this need to be analyzed by an artist, then you can create a whole bunch of images to find what fits the best, you find what it seems to be the perfect image, but, ups!, it have some details that you want to change to fit with the movie better, so you still need an artist, then the colors are not right with the palette of the movie, you need an artist, and i can go ON AND ON, you get the point?. and this is in a scenary where AI is so great that it can generate consistent great art and styles with just a simple prompt which is far from the reality today, you need a lot of extra work for that, and i am not even talking about consistent characters which is a more difficult task that can't be achieved today (with only one image of the design). those AI have A LOT of limitations and don't expect to be completely fixed soon. artists will be NECESSARY.

@@johancitygames It's true that you can't AI your way through concept art - the results aren't nearly specific enough in the actual 3d space to be used in production and I don't think text prompts are a good enough input to begin with (not to mention that AI is not capable of understanding any thoughtful symbolism and what not). But the text to image of the same beautiful sad girl isn't exactly what I worry about. There is AI tech that allows you to get way more specific results with image input (like a 5 second doodle is enough), ability to train a specific theme/object by just a few images. I'm sure we'll soon see some incredibly proficient workflows, people will be using one AI tool to make an image, another one to turn it into a 3d scene, move things around, back to image AI, use it to "inpaint" some areas, train characters likeness individually perhaps, touch it up in photoshop. And yeah, you'd still need SOME artists to properly mash all that stolen experience together, I'm sure some artists will even enjoy "drawing" without drawing (I'm already lost at that point though, I really don't see the appeal of a workflow like that), before probably getting replaced by another AI.

Companies won't hire a group of artists but using AI, individual artists can now create concept art, 3d assets and code for their OWN games and produce their own game which would be far more profitable than working for a shitty company 9 to 9 to barely make ends meet. I am astounded by the defeatism and blackpilling going on in the art community. AI is a tool, a tool is as good as the user. If a non-artist uses AI they are stuck with the generation. An artist using AI can refine it and make it much better. That picture is useless, no one commissioned or asked for it and it's not part of a bigger story or creative process, it literally has no value. An artist with an AI can make more pictures, meaning more commission slots, cheaper, and at the end of the day they'll have more free time to draw what they want or try different styles or even hobbies or just live their lives. As a Graphic Designer It hurts to see AI destroy this industry because I worked on Art my whole life... but instead of being bitter.. I decided to marry a STEM major.. even though my husband hates making things in 3D and I don't hate, I have had to just refocus myself from The Graphics industry into a field of technical design assistant instead. which i plan to go back and study.. Finland also has very few jobs in Art/Animation to begin with.. so this seemed like a better fit. then maybe I can join my husband the senior engineer at his work or work somewhere simular.

Graphic designers, performance artists and many people in fine arts are able to adapt Better, because the concept or message you're conveying is more important than the medium; you will change what artform or medium depending on the message. For animators, illustrators and painters..whe are tradepeople. The message is not so important as the technique. If someone comes along with no discipline, using no effort and not only stating they are the same as us but ALSO taking away our livelihoods then yes, we should be bitter. Additionally many American artists were trained at art colleges which left us thousands of dollars in debt, the arts receive no government funding, nor do we get any debt relief. Meanwhile these people- often the ones who disputed we should ask for a living wage from our art- have essentially decided we should be making a living from our art, but that we should be laborers who treat art as a hobby.

I respect those that are angry in fact I’m not devaluing their feelings but like with many things in life I’m willing to move on to something similar so I can get paid job at least. I’ve been out of work for years as an artist so thats partually why I chose to marry in the first place. I think that the whole problem with AI art comes from the fact that online AI art generators steal a lot of artwork without the OG artist's permission or without compensation. Also, if artists take control of AI art programs I think they can use the tool as an advantage to them. Maybe some artist will use it to come up with rough ideas for a project they're working on or I've even seen an artist use it to create psychedelic backgrounds for their art. The whole idea is to just treat AI as a tool and not as a replacement for an artist.

I agree it can be a useful tool for inspiring ideas, however we are dealing with the unfortunate reality that it most likely will be used to replace human artists because that's usually how things go. We almost always get the bad endings and outcomes in the real world. 😵 It's like expecting a thief not to steal items that cost $1. I mean, $1 is not much money at all, right? And yet they absolutely will steal it regardless of the price simply because they can and it will cost them basically nothing to do so. So one bad outcome is that companies will see AI as an opportunity and cheap alternative to paying for an artist. After all, companies LOVE outsourcing work to the cheapest possible alternative. Worse yet, the AI tools will cost money to use and while the company behind them profits from that, they'll simultaneously make money off all the art that was put into the databases without permission, profiting off the backs of the artists who lose a potential extra source of income. I don't like being a downer, I just have a really hard time believing we'll see a good outcome.

As I've been reading your replies, my first thought would be to put in copyright laws in place right away that requires AI generator users/curators (whoever's feeding the machine artwork) to get permission or to pay the artist, but then I realized just because there are copyright laws doesn't mean people respect them. So many people openly pirate many forms of media. I frequently pirate movies or anime without a second thought. Artists pirate art software instead of choosing to pay for it. I feel like with the birth of the internet, there has been a huge boom in piracy. Perhaps we have to reform this culture of piracy instead. Another interesting topic is the public domain movement. I saw this one KZbin video about this guy explaining it titled something along the lines of "Why you shouldn't own your work" but for whatever reason I can't find it on KZbin anymore. I'm not arguing for it; I just think it would be interesting to look further into this topic.

My father codes for a living and my mother is an accountant and both were told a long time ago that AI would take over their jobs and it hasn't. It still could, but it hasn't yet. what most people worry about is not their jobs being gone but becoming even more undervalued. People outside of this field often undermine it and don't see it as as complicated or serious as other jobs. Now they themselves can go online and produce a picture that they like, maybe more then what they assigned you to make. You may know better, but it's the guys above you that make all the decisions- about the project, the job and your livelihood.

There will always be place for real artists, also one bit of advice: storyteling is something only humans can do, and what will make yours stand out is way you aproach it, like there are lots of interesting themes, but even more ways to convey and explore them, only limit is your imagination!

I've been thinking about the same things. I think in the near future, the unfair and extremely disappointing truth is that many jobs involving commissioning, specific 2d and even 3d pieces, will be dead. To be completely honest, I wouldn't listen to anyone saying "adapt," as in somehow go beyond AI in speed or begin using AI to compete. There are also things we can still do to potentially prevent AI art from taking over. AI art is a copyright infringement abomination, and should not exist. Most artists do not want their art being stolen and mashed up by AI, so the best chance we have is fighting against them legally in my opinion. But please do not stop making art. AI may make take away jobs, but it will never be able to make original pieces created from pure imagination like you. AI isn't able to create exactly what you are thinking either, so your pieces will always be original. AI art is just mashed up pieces, and arguably not real art.

I come from a Computer Science background and have experience with AI + Machine Learning. I wanted to address a few concerns about this video and the comments. I completely understand where everyone is coming from because we fear being replaced by AI and robots. (I have the same fear because I worry that AI can code and build apps faster than me). When it comes to AI, it uses the past to predict the future in order to to create something. In other words, to determine someone's future or to develop something, we look at their past behaviour. AI can only look at past art (or past training data in AI terms) to create the art they make. That said, AI can not create something entirely "new." A Human's creative side of the brain is much more creative than a model that uses past data to predict the future, so there are limitations. (Technically, Robots + AI can feel emotion but that's a different discussion). Trends, future breakthroughs, and what we see prevalent in art (or anywhere in life) are dictated by humans and cannot be accurately predicted by AI by 100%. An AI can predict 70% of future trends in the stock market, but when it comes to art, art trends are constantly changing, and these trends are dictated by what the human eye/society likes. Not a robot. An AI can't have a "Taste" for art because all it does is suck and eat everyone's art. If it likes to eat absolutely everything for training purposes, how will an AI know what looks good and what doesn't look good if it perceives everything as delicious? Bro, if AI could 100% accurately predict the stock market, there would be no point in a stock market where there are losses. Let's take Arcane's (League of Legends) art style, for example. That art style with the brush strokes animation and the concept was entirely new. While the artists may seek inspiration from other sources (CyberPunk art or creating a mood board), its art style has been so signature and "new" , an AI would not be able to "predict League of Legends art Styles" in 2010. So keep doing your art. AI (and humans), don't know what will be popular or what new shows or movies will be released, so the only species that can determine what is prevalant is humans. Concept Artists are also valuable because we are expected to make "new" concepts, so how can an AI produce something new if it doesn’t know what past data to work with? If you are even more worried, people say pharmacists are going to be replaced by AI and robots. While I understand the fear, who will research new medicine to treat the sick, new chemicals, etc.? A robot can’t, if all it knows is the "past.” Also, we need researchers too because we need discovery. An AI CAN NOT Discover (if it only has past data). Only humans are capable of creating something "new" and discovering it. Something to think about.

I think your view on the matter is interesting, and I agree with you on most of it. AI can’t make a creative breakthrough and will never be able to create something genuinely new. However, I think the real concern about the usage of AI is the impact something like this can have on the number of jobs available, and how this technology could change the animation pipeline. Studios and producers take a considerable economic risk every time a piece of media is created. Coming up with new ideas takes time and money, and you can never be sure if something you create is gonna be a success. Since AI gives us the power of visualizing ideas fast and cheaper, the time and money at stake get drastically reduced, and the appeal of using this tool is a lot. I’ll give you an example. On platforms like TikTok and KZbin Shorts, the number of content creators using computer-generated narrators is high, and we’re pretty much used to it. Some of us even use it ourselves! Because it’s way easier and cheaper to do so. If you think about it, if we had to use our voices or hire a voice actor for every TikTok or short uploaded online daily, these types of platforms would never be as successful as they are now. Creatively, I think you make an excellent argument. But if we put it into practice, getting ideas down faster can be more appealing. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us! (PS: Adding to your argument, something that I could see happening is that the quality of new upcoming media can downgrade a lot because of these tools. Because, as you mentioned, AI is not capable of creating new things. But if the industry uses this tool anyway, we might get stuck in the past when it comes to creativity)

Art is a process, and ideas can evolve during that process, a lot of illustrations or comics/manga, are not the same as the first idea that came out of the mind of the artist. And if those artists used to instantly visualize their work, maybe a lot of things that are in the pop culture now, would never have been created. There are so many exemples of huge artists saying that the work that made them famous was something completely different at first or that the work that made them famous was created because something happened in the life of the artist that leads him to feel a strong emotion, maybe anger, maybe sadness, but the artist needed to express themselves through art and BOOM it became a masterpiece ! so getting the ideas faster may be good but if you actually don't know how to make them evolve and if you're someone that like use AI but you never had any imagination, it will not be useful.

Yes. AI functions on preexisting databases that depend on human input. The logical conclusion to your argument would be that human work is valued. It is a best case scenario, however. The problem is whether human work actually WILL be valued, or whether money and productivity will speak louder. Considering how capitalism has such a stronghold in our lives, my expectations are rock bottom. Maybe I'm wrong, and we really can work together to solve this problem of AI reliance, but currently this topic makes me want to cry.

I think you are very wrong about this ,the human brain have not really biologically evolved in the las 300000 years ,go back in time and bring a baby from the prehistoric times put him in the university and he will be able to become a doctor an engineer or in this context an art student that makes masterpieces in painting ,but leave him in the past and hw will be limited to do basic art in cave's walls even though his or her brain has the potential to do much bigger things , this is because he has no accesible "data " ,you know that this AI models have access to much bigger ammounts of data ,they can basically"learn" ( for a lack of better definition) an style in seconds styles that could take a human a lifetime to learn let alone perfect ,they are able to "mix "styles creating things we could not even imagine because it process the data in ways we can't even understand,nevertheless the results are astounding ...I find it curious that coming from an AI background you can't see the relationship with the "alpha go" moment , because that particular instance currently we are changing the paradigm from creating "models" that we humans can understand , to the models that create results in ways we can't understand but nevertheless are correct,because we are entering ( in a very few years) the critical moment at wich exponential growth of AI will be so fast that no human will be able to keep up ,that why AI leading experts can't even predict what is going to happen and this is even before we leave our aging binary based computer systems wich are emerging into quantum DNA an other non silicone machines ,that will create so many "new " things where computer generated art frankly will be like adding 1+1 in the great scheme of things to come...art is basically an expression of data ,is been proven 100% that creativity is not longer a human trait you should watch documentaries about AI-da the robot artist where that is explained in depth ,another crucial aspect is that Ai-da is not limited to what it can learn from the internet databases ,it has onboard cameras which enable it to learn from its immediate sorroundings ,so yes it can read "emotions" better than a human can ,this will allow it to explore nature and even the cosmos in ways that we can't simply process it ,putting this in painting will be the easiest thing for it ...and the results will blow our minds even when we can't fully understand what we are seeing

architecture is definitely affected with things like parametric designs being more widely adopted with even its own course of study now. Interior design doesn’t escape the same problem where there’s algorithms and AI for the optimum layouts for different aesthetics and functions. Car designing has Czinger doing a similar thing with car designs. These are just the biggest names in the field, I’m sure there is and will be more.

That's how I'm using AI generated images. I just give it a topic and if an I like ends up popping up, I'll try to draw that and add that bits and pieces that I like. I'll just do what I can and then just look at the image as a reference. Either that or trace over it if it would look better in the bizarre shape that was generated. There are just somethings my brain can't understand when wanting to draw it.

The counter I have heard is that some other country who doesn’t care about copyright would steal images and create a powerful Art AI anyway- which could persuade countries like the US to look the other way about all the copyright infringement so that they can be the first to do it over another country. :/ not sure how sound the logic is here though.

@@luizabianco if execution is the limitation, than that actually promotes A.I. through bulk output at vast processing speeds rather than hand draw by an artist. It is far easier to select and adapt that create from scratch. Your logic favors automation rather than flaws that make art unique. If you seen some A.I. generated stories, they adapt to the users preferences thus being better than any artist.

@@luizabianco funny you mentioned fast food which isn't automated and relies on human error from low paid people who are motivated to specifically not care. Car factories which are automated like Toyota, have exactly what the customer wants at the click of a button to machines that turn out a higher quality product much faster. For those that consume art, there are a growing number of people who want something tailored to them instead of what a human artist tries to sell them. Machine learning can track what you view longer and your search preferences long before a human artist "gets inspired". The human artist is becoming a niche market and an outdated way to think of art. Have you seen movies like Chappie or instances like Data from Star Trek where machines develope a more human soul and can imagine and create just like their human creators? Get used to seeing the line blur between human and A.I.

That consumerism dystopian viewpoint only matters if quality goes down. If speed, accuracy, and quality all increases, then this isn't exactly a "fast food mentally" as that only works towards speed and profitability at the cost of quality. Your "toyism comparison" comment only acts a bad belittlement to attack me rather than the topic of which I am opinionated about. Isn't it just as naive to pity oneself complaining about the inevitable as if it actually matters? A.I. art is here and no amount of bitching is going to stop it now is it. I for one embrace and welcome the A.I. art generating technology be it for personal entertainment or for commercial adaptation. If A.I. becomes sentient enough, I'd even share copyright claims as a collaboration with it. A similar situation happened with the ability to draw on a personal computer. Hand drawn artists and painters feared that their jobs would be taken by the new art form. We still have both now don't we.

As a professional concept artist I can assure you that AI will not be overtaking the role any time soon. Ai is currently unable to implement the elements of visual psychology and design fundamentals that go into the work as a concept artist, (they basically just smash images together to see what they can get) which means that even if AI can make a beautiful image off of prompts it lacks the design foundations to be consistently effective for entertainment design. Larger studios know this and every time a junior artist brought up AI art during a meeting we ended up having the same conversation. Concept art is a lot more than just having lots of ideas shooting in the dark based on a prompt. The biggest problem that this will bring to the table for concept art specifically is in the presence of people who don't understand that there is more thinking and design in the job. Truthfully, concept art is %90 effective problem solving and %10 art. Unfortunately, anyone who is under the impression that concept artists are just good at art will pay a machine to spit out 200 shots in the dark before asking a real professional to get something perfect in the first 5 takes, and they'll probably assume that they were being smart while they do it.

Exactly this: I'm an artist (character designer/illustrator) and my cousin is a professional photographer. My photos and hers are just a whole world of difference! I make more candid in the moment kind of shots, but despite me having a pretty steady hand, it always ends up looking pretty haphazard compared to her work. Mine are more like a family photo album, but her photos are a work of art. Also, you should see her more artsy shots, her skills really put those fake deep Instagram models to shame. Like, there's ACTUAL symbolism in her work, it's not just your standard 'I'm 12 and this is deep' fare. I like to say that I try to capture the moment, but that she actually manages to: her composition and lighting is just so much better, and I it's just really impressive how she can do that in like a split-second. I know I take about 2 seconds to even get my camera steady enough to take the picture.

@Juris Angeles Oh I bet. I always knew that being a "starving artist" would be hard, extremely hard, and I always knew I wouldn't make a lot of money. But I'd prefer to be poor and doing something I enjoy than making decent money doing something that makes me want to kms. Having to compete with robots that can spit out high quality art at a billionth of the speed was never an obstacle I had considered until it happened. I'm still going to try though. Also I don't know what kind of work you do or what your skill level is but it sounds like you were undercharging for your services. $30 for something you spent hours on is insanely cheap. Good luck

Considering how my current direction in art is to become a concept artist, it deeply hurts that AI art may jeopardise my chances of success. However, I think it's important to remember that we shouldn't just stop drawing because AI exists. As mentioned already in Michelle's video, AI art (in its current state) cannot capture human emotion or the humanity behind an art piece. We, as humans, are still able to inject experience, story, emotion, and our own habits, style, and imperfections into a piece. While we are capable to make our own observations and have our own experiences, AI cannot. Who can say if it truly fathoms things like perspective or colour theory or animation principles and so on. In fact, I think that even if AI art became the new norm, that makes human art even more valuable and precious. So don't put yourself down. Keep creating. If you love art, then keep doing it, even in face of adversity. In the end, I do hope that people will feel more drawn to art created by the humans and their tools rather by an intangible machine.

No, Ai precisely can capture human emotion or the humanity behind an art piece and it does that easily even now. In fact so easily that wit will perfectly convey those things with the painting of a girls who has 3 hands and head growing out of her butt. bit it will still capture all that emotion. what AI fails to do is to produce any kind of meaning. what AI makes is nothing but pure emotion. AI will never produce something like famous "Black Square" painting. And for me it looks even good that it will eliminate those shitty artists who make great paintings that lack any substance. If all you do with your art is express your personal emotions then that's not something worth to look at.

Thank you for this video. I started art only 2 years ago but I fell in love and decided it has to be my job because I will love to work that way. Seeing the AI art rising is very discouraging and frustrating for someone who worked on their skill every day for the last 2 years, just to see that what takes me several hours can a computer generate in seconds…. I am scared for myself not being able to find a job in the art industry in the future (as I still have to learn a lot) and AI is evolving so quickly….it’s not about the money it’s that I wanted to turn my passion into my daily job so I could be happy….my journey has just started yet I feel like it’s already ending. Hopefully people can appreciate human element in the art instead of robot generating pictures in seconds. Using artworks of other artists to feed the AI without any consent or compensation is a whole another story that just pisses me off

I've been getting into software engineering and AI but as a veteran artist... This is where I cross the line. For a long time, I've stuck to illustrations but now I feel like I have to start learning how to make comics or animation which might actually be pretty beneficial since it'll take me out of my comfort zone but ooohh man... Years of work being fed to artificial intelligence in just a few clicks... It's infuriating. Now I have this pressure to differentiate my work from the stuff the ai replicates. I tried using Stable Diffusion and fed some of my works to the ai and wrote a some prompts with a little bit of tweaks. And man, that bot is smart... I hate it... but part of me loves it cause I study ai... but damn, I really hate it...

If you haven't heard the news, they are currently taking it to court (copyright infringement... Also can AI generated work be "copyright" protected etc.) Judging by past rules (I monkey took a photograph of itself. A photographer tried to copyright it under his name. Court ruled against him stating that enough human involvement into the piece has to be achieved before being able to copyright it under your name). Judging from all of this, since companies like money, producing work using AI will bring them no money as they cannot "copyright" it to their name. Now, I say this will create a unique market. Companies will hire artists to CREATE art specifically to be fed into the AI OR will just buy art from artists just to have the right to use it to feed into AI. This resolves the copyright issue (artists were compensated for the work the AI uses etc. And have their permission) AND they can use them commerically. Why? Imagine you are an artist. You draw 20 pictures by hand. You feed them into an AI. An AI produces a picture based on those 20 pictures. You can "copyright" it as its just a "collage" using all 20 pictures that YOU DREW. You we're involved in the process. You drew all the drawings. The output of the AI just took your own work and combined them. In this case, all "the company's" pictures were used and all the images were obviously human involved since all images used to collage were made by that same company - their employees (human involvement) etc. If for some reason, the court isn't satisfied, just do some manipulation in Photoshop using the AI generated images and there you have it! Enough human involvement!

There will be no "avoid" and no "tool" that is useful to you because this coming for you all, this is inevitable, as long as you keep coping like this bruh never seen such an industry who just say "ok, I will move" as if you have no foot on the matter. AI can do a lot of things, but it can never be original on its own. It needs someone to guide it to create something with meaning. This is similar in many ways to a drum machine. That device can mimic the drums for a track almost perfectly, but if the person working with the machine doesn't know the drums, or worse, you're simply using a preset, it will feel stiff and robotic. But if you _do_ know the drums, you can program it to play as lively as any human being. A drum machine still needs a drummer in the end. If you know art, you can get an AI art machine to create wonders, or even to simply use it to quickly iterate between fully rendered compositional ideas without spending hours rendering each one. An AI art machine still needs an artist in the end. And while yes, it will be (not can. _will_) be used to cheat artists out of a job by shitty companies willing to make a quick buck, this already happens with music (soulless corporate music), and musicians still get gigs, because they're simply better than machines run by people that don't care. AI art is a tool. Use it.

I reckon the best way for artists and ai to keep a healthy relationship is 1 simple thing. The art that teaches these ai (at least the ones used for profit) MUST be explicitly allowed by the respective artist. Like a copyright law that may or may not be imposed by the party with copyrights. Music is a form of art that already has protection like this (although paying to submit copyright for every piece of art might be a bit of hassle) so art for now is purely ethics... UNLESS art 'copyright' is protected within terms of service of a social media platform, that art may not be taken from the site. DeviantArt announced an ai art program in which all existing user's arts are pre-enrolled and will be used to generate images, this is the thing artists want protection from. As a software engineer the situation makes me think of if i had to code my replacement. 😅

I’ve had a lot of advice given to me since starting school. One of my foundation professors told me “use your story” as far as creating concept and developing. I fully support that. AI art is good, but not touching me with their story. We would’ve never got AI to create Steven Universe, The Owl House, or Oni by AI. I know it’s good at mimicking us but it doesn’t speak from experience or from feeling. Which I know you mentioned telling your story, but yeah.

I actually think it’s pure hysteria. I work as an artist for a record label who considered using AI images for cover art, the thing is….ai lack refined concept. Sure it looks cool but it’s currently unable to tell a story, feature specific things at a certain degree and it’s relatively hard to use it for assets since it’s not created with layers. So the record labels still come to me and my peers because it would be a lot more exhausting to rework AI generated cover art into layers + assets. I think every industry will come to realize that cohesion and concept is a level of quality they can’t attain without actual artists.

Exactly. AI helps immensely with conceptualization and trims down the whole design process. If anything, it's beneficial for us artists, because an AI does not have the capacity to comprehend a cohesive design concept.

The thing is, not every industry cares about the refinement or story details. This is why she put down visual design / concept art as one of the fields to avoid. It’s not meant to be perfect or shown to the public. It’s just meant to be a quick visual example of a product’s design, characters, or atmosphere. It’s usually handed off to other artists like 3D modelers as reference for actual product design. So sure, a record label company might not have too much use for it, but a lot of other industries will. And a lot of low budget companies who just need a quick visual reference will choose AI instead of spending $100+ on a concept artist.

@@catcactus1234 it absolutely depends on the dev team’s concept anyway. A niche game with a strong visual style isn’t going to use a thing so vague. Sure you can use bits and piece for photobash but it still takes a trained eye to make it look good. In the future it will be critiqued anyway for looking as cheesy as most plastic surgeries. It will all have a distinct “AI LOOK” to it that will either dock points from the atmosphere of the game and over all art direction. And due to the ai’s lack of really getting in there it will reflect poorly on the finished versions that were created using the the AI concept art as inspiration or guide.

@@stardustandspit Hmm I’m not sure what AI art you’ve seen, but I’ve definitely seen a lot which match up to what a professional concept artist could produce. They don’t look plastic-y or stylistically dull. I say this as an artist myself with a strong interest in concept art. Midjourney is absolutely killing it at sci-fi/fantasy concept art. Just take a look at some of those “(song) but every lyric is an AI generated image” videos- those are genuinely well made and thought provoking images. Do they sometimes produce wonky images with strange faces? Yes. But could they replace a concept artist if the person behind it knows how to filter down the results to what they’re looking for? Also yes. I messed around with it for a few minutes and managed to come up with an image that closely matched the style, atmosphere, and character I was going for. I agree AI isn’t going to be useful for some scenarios, like yours, but I think you’re underselling how good the art is. Non-artists most likely wouldn’t even be able to tell if it’s AI generated at this point.

I think one big con about AI imagery is that it creates a subtle uncanny valley by sourcing its materials from existing works. Even if it looks right at first glance and is mostly anatomically incorrect, it still looks so weirdly _generic_ and fails to pop to my senses like _actual_ artwork does.

This reminds me of that time I went to art school because I dreamed of becoming a 2d animator like my faves Frank and Ollie, but all anyone cared about teaching/employing at that point was 3d. Then I discovered I loved digital painting but somehow ended up as a dance teacher who did graphic design for other dancers. Maybe my point is that as artists we feel we have to always be creating, and that's what it's truly about for us. It may not always make us money but we still have to create to feel fulfilled. So don't stop. Society cares about money, power, and celebrity; so I guess the people who can link their art to these things will become successful. For myself, I just want to help others in whatever way I can with my creativity, and hopefully that will be enough. Never stop coming up with new ideas and have a backup plan or two.

nobody had any issues with ai when we were making markiplier at a mcdonalds in hell memes but nobody know that these ais were being made specifically to rework the art industry... i find it ironic that every single person who works with copyrights have said that ai art CANT be copyrighted, while the actual ai developers will swear on their graves that everything is original and copyrightable.... especially... specifically only copyrightable when YOURE paying them... for their ai... lmao. it's stupid as hell, and i have a feeling that this will all be either shut down within the next few years when it comes into actual legal issues, or it'll just continue on and overtake what it's already doing. to boot it started coming out around a big economic dip for a lot of us where money is short and everyone is considering their jobs and work as an artist. people can get copyright struck from just using an extra second of someone else's music in their videos, why should they be able to take our entire piece and thousands of others and completely get away with it, without any consequences at all? at the very least, ai art should not be able to be monetized at all. and also have a big stupid watermark slapped all over it where it'd be difficult to remove from the actual picture. i had a run in from another person on my main website for posting, where the website had JUST banned ai art the literal day this person joined. and they just ended up moving to deviantart. but they're still there on da, posting ai adoptables and ai commissions and selling prints and such, and seems to have just started to get into the nsfw patreon type work now, too. it didn't bother me too much, since they labelled everything as being ai, and they were clearly an artist before it came out and they still had to do touch ups, but i just couldnt wrap my head around why anyone would want to pay 50 dollars for something that was ai made, and had that "stroke image" feel to it. she seemed nice, but i couldn't lie and not say that it doesn't feel wrong. wrong for genuine skills and passion to be markered over by something like an action reply cheat code to give them all the items in the game and godmode leaving them with just the actual game to play. i dunno about anyone else, but whenever i used cheats it made my game boring. i didn't get anything from playing it with cheats because it wasnt MINE, but given to me from the gaming gods. i cant in good conscious ever use ai, i dont think. i used it once or twice for inspiration, but it just deprived anything that would have been mine originally. now i will use the ai art to make pictures of optimus prime twerking and "fanboy and chum chum oc"! take that ai gods im going to flood your systems with terrible megatron optimus fanart!

Judging by how they are currently taking this to court, I can see this only creating a new "market". 1st - copyrighted material. I see this as an issue for companies who would want to commerically use whatever images the AI produces. Judging from past court rulings (monkey took picture of itself. Photographer tried to copyright it under his name. Court ruled against him due to lack of human involvement) as it stands right now, these images cannot be copyrighted and thus will create issues when these companies want to profit from these images as it will be in the gray area if they want to use it commerically. A simple solution? This is where the "new market" emerges. Companies will hire artists to CREATE art specifically to feed into the AI (and thus it can be Tailored to whatever style they want) Since these artists will be employees, and all AI art is using the art from their employees, I am guessing they will be able to copyright it. Why? Because there is human involvement. Think about it like this... You are an artist. You draw 20 pictures. You train an AI using ONLY these 20 pictures. You get an output. You could argue in court that you can copyright the generated AI image as its just a "collage" of 20 of your OWN pictures that YOU drew. You were involved in the process. You drew all the pictures. You fed all the pictures. You imputed the prompt. You did some last touch ups on Photoshop. YOU were involved. And thus, YOU get to copyright the generated picture and YOU get to commerically use it freely. Companies are treated as humans according to the law. So if a company hires employees to draw. And they use AI trained on drawings made in house, then by definition, THEY get the right to use the generated images commerically. Think of Disney or a big studio like that. They have thousands of drawings already that THEY did themselves (the company). And since all works produced by an employee is the employers by default, this is a solution for companies.

Unfortunately, AI Art is becoming more and more advanced and flawless so (probably) pretty soon artists will have to lower their worth to even be considered as an option. What's really sickening, is to see how many people out there are just flat out ... mean. Like if someone genuely doesn't care what's happening? I mean that's not ideal but it is what it is. Not everyone cares about art or artists. I guess that's everyones right really. But directly hoping people fall out of their jobs? Calling artists entitled? Hoping for people to lose their careers and professions to go away? That's like, I don't even know where to begin. Don't they understand that this is not only about creatives? A lot of professions will have to deal with AI probably sooner than later. It's a form of automatition and increase in efficiency with the potential growing exponentially. If it just happen unchecked it might devalue labor to a point where a lot of people either won't have an income anymore or will be pushed out of the middle class. There are also a tone of processes which an AI (at the moment) cant do, for example, just doing a 2D video game, requires lots more work than a AI generative Flat Image, for animation there are just assets that require to be done separately and composed together in a scene, layout etc, I see Ai as a tool for us artists and also as it usually happens,there is a ying to the yang, art made by human artists would then also be valued more in some areas. :)

tbh, im a little happy I dropped art as a career back in high school and pursued nursing. At least now I don't have to worry about A.I. I talk to people working in AI and the general feel is, "If I didn't someone else would" so there is an ethics but that is to provide cover rather than to effect real change. Every time you use an automated order system at a restaurant, you are using "AI" used to simplify/automate and replace human workers with computer ones. It just is reaching artists but same net result. All you can do is try your best and hope that you survive in this.

Also if they can’t afford a human cool, you don’t want them to ask you for a commission, because they going to try to find a reason to not pay as much or get away with the work for free.

A humble opinion, AI art is never going to replace human art. In all actuality, AI art may look "good" but it does need help from the human artist.

Tbh i get more drawn to medias with a proper artist because i like to check their social media and other work, its too boring if the art was made by AI i like to appreciate the artist's artistic decisions as inspo for my own art and i wouldn't be able to do that if the art was made by AI, the media using that art wouldn't catch my attention at all for sure

I heard a good argument why concept art will be the least affected by AI art. It's your job as a concept artist to understand the lore/backstory of what ever it is you are drawing, bringing inspiration from within the story. You need a strong understanding of certain aspects of the Universe and characters within, that an AI can not replicate. I forget who said this but it makes sense to me.

It hurts the bottom line, people who are freelancing and not working for major studios because a lot of game developers will just gravitate to ai art because it will bee cheaper and the results sadly are quite good.

basically poorer people, people doin personal projects are going to be the ones really using AI. bigger companies, corporations are still going to be using actual artists. most art jobs are going to be cut down in size, but almost none are going to completely disappear good video, it was very comprehensive.

Until ai starts generating animations, I think I'm gonna have to start considering animation commissions over art commissions, which sucks because animation often takes longer then art (depending on whether it's shaded, how long the animation is etc) and its pretty tedious to get it right in a timely manner (atleast for me)

I think you are wrong about something. Very soon, using AI won't be free. The companies developing them have no intension of just giving it for free. Right now they are giving it for free, but because it benefits them and trains their AI.
