Pablo Picasso once said (“good artists copy; great artists steal”). if this is true ai is the world's greatest stealing machine. it also means that ai is the greatest artist that mankind has ever seen
@ewqeruijasksnd2 жыл бұрын
This literally means it's getting harder to get into art careers. No one started off as an art director/ comic artist that tells their own story/ traditional artist. They started off doing commission works, art assistants, and entry-level things that can be greatly replaced by AI. Lets say, before AI, a studio needs to hire 10 art employees. Now they might only need 2, since AI can do most of the work. You mentioned that Animation Union Jobs are not affected, which I totally believe that's true, but on the other hand, that means getting into Animation studios will be even harder and more competitive since more young artists are heading this way.

whats so great about doing mood board and turnarounds for concept art? those jobs suck, and lots of AAA jobs aren't as cracked up as you think they are.
@ewqeruijasksnd2 жыл бұрын
@@bwzarchive708 bro AI can do way more than that. And let's just be honest, most art jobs (beginner -mid level) are not that "creative" at all, it doesn't matter if it's concept art or freelance illustration or graphic design or interior design etc...AI could take them all. It won't happen overnight, but it will affect creative industries step by step. Don't get me wrong, I'm on artist side, but I see little hope overall.

or you could use said AIs to speed your own workflow and not need to work for an animation studio like lets say someone creates an AI that you feed it a couple of images in a timeline and it automatically generates all the inbetweens, why would you want to go to an animation studio were you dont even own your own ideas when now the tools to create your own animation exist and are more accesible and easier than ever, yeah now a studio will only need 1 person to do the work of 10 but at the same time that means that you can do the work of 10 people by yourself and that AI isnt even theoretical btw, people are working on tools like those

@@ewqeruijasksnd You do have a good point that a lot of artist jobs (industry or freelance) tend not to help artists flex their creativity as much as most people think they would. It's because, at the end of the day, the jobs aren't simply to let artists create what they want - it's usually to create by what the consumer wants (the only exception I can think of atm is when customers could visit a gallery or art fair, and buy a piece that caught their fancy).

@@3polygons Huh. Good advice.
@3polygons2 жыл бұрын
@@slowcodersloth Thank you . I mentioned it as I have been seeing for a while (specially musicians and singers) a bunch of artists doing this on Twitch, and they also use it (in the section just below the video screen, much more prominent than YT's description area or about) to promote their Patreon (for extra direct income with custom work, exclusive content etc, ppl pay a subscription like other people do as well in the twitch channel, if u get both, bingo!), Discord (to generate community, literally), Reddit (same), Instagram(overall promotion, pretty pics, some reels), and some even TikTok. And often, they use these other platforms to link to the others, so, it all multiplies. TikTok and youtube shorts are very important for fast growth. This all is the point number 5 of her video, but streaming how you work, being the number one stronger counter against an automatic AI, and even the people who might falsely accuse you of using AI (this is happening)... This advanatages shouldn't be overlooked, is a strong point. I know... not everyone is an extrovert, but you can just capture what happens on screen (your clipstudio/krita/paintstorm/SAI or whatever drawing app) and stop hating your voice as we all have beautiful voices. ;) BTW, is not something that _only_ 2D artists do, including illustrators and animators... I'm seeing wood cutters, clay sculptors, people modeling in Zbrush, indie developers wile making games (yesss! even coding! tho those typically do also their own art). The coders have it tougher to entertain (except for the people that really like to see them struggle while coding, as are programmers, too) , but they manage, with their talk and chat interaction. Artists streaming, there's a whole range from those who don't say a word during minutes (and only talk to reply one of 10 or 20 questions in the chat), to those that are total improv stars, constantly chatting and being stand up comedy geniuses. These people are not making crazy money (some do enough for a living tho, or at least a side gig), is ONE MORE way to promote themselves (often to get some gigs/custom work), so that they are seen as more than a chunk of pixels and a name, to indeed, mean something to people, get closer to their hearts (so they'll buy from them before than others) . But tho most aren't aware yet, it's also an amazing way to survive the AI era. Twitch has now even a section in front page (that won't always appear, it's random) called "creatives" (or sth like that), as they surely have realized there's crowd there. But yeah, not a way to "make money" (tho you never know), but to get known and start the brand. I'd say, if possible (not sure how much of a prob could that be) stream BOTH at same time on KZbin and Twitch. As twitch alone is hard as is way less interconnected (indeed, most people making good bucks on Twitch recently, is because they brought big hordes from KZbin/Instagram/etc). It's an amazing place to bring an existing audience. So streaming in both is ideal. As YT keeps being the second search engine (and google redirects to Yotube, anyway) in the world, and has a much better way to discover old video streams and videos (that's another thing, leave the live streams recorded as VODs, in both sites, so that people can watch you like normal offline YT videos, multiply by a lot the reach) , Youtbe it's yet the best promotion tool to date. It's just that... if you get lucky and are found by certain Twitch users that have this philosophy of helping the creators (is more of a habit on Twitch than on KZbin, but that means nothing if no one finds your twitch channel), you might find there certain side income which , like all, can help as well, not only promo. As I say, the culture of tipping is much higher on Twitch than KZbin. So, stream the signal to both at same time, imo, and announce when you go online, literally on: Twitter (if it doesn't self-destroy), Discord (to your closer hardcore fans). And those with yet time in their hands after all that... Pinterest boards (current algorithm in pinterest favors a lot constant posts, unlike before), and review on stream (Twich, KZbin Live) whatever the fans (fan art, memes) post on your reddit, if you make one, react to all that, is a way to keep growing the community, it motivates ppl to make reddit posts. But these two last ones, really if you have actual extra time. TikTok would be more important, and still can be a fast cheapo (meme like in "quality", so , barrier is low) animatics of your drawings, no need to make a silly dance ;) .

What I wonder is why we illustrators have always been so individualistic. We have needed always to unionize, but almost never did. Now it'd become handy....
@toulouse12 жыл бұрын
animators work for like a few massive animation studios, so its easy to have a collective bargaining system. Most illustrators work freelance, so idk how easy it would be for them to unionize
@3polygons2 жыл бұрын
@@toulouse1 I have seen it happen, in my country. But at some point we all went back to our individualistic, " _way of the Dodo_ " vibe. But at some point these people even made a book (widely approved by most, national wide in my country) to establish minimum prices per illustration and many types of graphic work, to incredible detail. Which could be referenced to clients, etc. To avoid a race to the bottom with prices (which has its maximum expression in places like Fiverr, Upwork, etc). It was kind of an association (dunno if yet exists) which also helped with legal advice, etc. Indeed, there were more than one of those. Non profit, btw. The lack of unionizing or at least putting some coordination, damages hugely any professional field. I even was the admin of an illustrators' big forum, and I know that a lot can be done. I remember driving 1000 kms every now and then just for a one day meeting (tho also cause all of 'em were _very_ good friends, good people) It is not about a technical problem to do it, it is about the way illustrators and painters typically are (me included). Most go to their own thing - not saying it's being selfish, but yep like allergic to doing stuff in common... which is imo, very dumb- ...it's kind of a catch- 22 : most are so due to being barely surviving and unable to afford energy or time in other than surviving. But they are in such dire situation partly due to not unionizing neither working in common. I've made some tries in fixing that, but you can't when people is not really willing to, or they just can't afford the time. This AI thing can be the last straw, for them, however. I myself am gonna continue painting for ever, no matter what (even if I won't make money with it in the future). Animation, though... there's a huge difference. You can be a freelance animator (with tricks and doing only certain things), be it 3D or 2D, but it makes a lot of sense to do it as a team effort. But illustrators and painters do their thing on their own, and indeed, it's all about it, each one having their own take at things, never a work in common. Good for their art, bad for protecting the field and jobs.

It's kinda ironic how the rise of AI generated art, which is digital media, could signal the comeback of traditional art, which has sort of faded when digital art first appeared. If people are feeling a bit unsure about continuing art as a job in face of AI, it can't hurt to try diversifying art skills and mediums. Besides, most AI art seems to be this weird surrealistic shaded style and not much else. I'm not even sure if AI can do flat colour art (though I may have just never seen one). There's still room for other styles to come through, assuming they're not being fed to the dataset.

There are more models than just the "standard" one, and a lot, and now there is something called dreambooth which basically allows you to re-train a model with a specific thing (like your face for example), and with not a lot of images (about 20-30, but you could go higher ofc). For an art style its not as simple as just re-training the model with a few images, but im pretty sure with the standard model you can just prompt "flat colour" and it will do it, and if not then there is probably a trained model that does it. As for the AI scandal, ignoring the people that prefer human art (a.k.a, going for the general consumer) then i think the jobs that will remain for at least some years/decades from now on is anything related to animation. Yeah, its true that there are some AIs that already do some kind of animation and considering how fast is their development then maybe soon we will have AIs that can do animations decently, but i think it would be really hard for it to replicate a really good animation. Lets imagine we have 2 animes, one which is a generic isekai or something like that, and other which is a long-awaited anime. First of all, i think fans and public in general would not want an anime adaption of something they have been waiting for to be made with AI, but even then, AI would probably suit perfectly with any generic anime and people would probably not really care, but for a big anime? I think there is no way that in less than a decade (or even more) AIs could replicate the quality of animation of animes (specially fights) like attack on titan, one punch man, etc. So that's why i think animators and anyone related to animation is pretty safe.

Let me give you a new perspective. I’m a fashion enthusiast. I always have been and always will be. I actively seek out small retailers, independent designers for unique pieces that I know are made with love. I do the same for jewelry. I can walk into any fast fashion store and buy a 20 dollar fast fashion too and 5 dollar ring, but I actively seek out pieces that are handmade with love. Every year I discover more brands and I will never run out of brands and designers to discover because there will always be a market for it. Art is the same. The people who don’t care what they hang in their home and go for a cheap quick print from an AI artist are the equivalent of fast fashion shoppers. But the world is full of people who do care and want the piece made by a human that they resonate with. Regarding art careers specifically, I don’t know what direction you wish to go into but there are enough careers you can go into. I do believe that AI might endanger graphic designers and some digital artists, but at the end of the day if you build a community around your experiences and your principles, that community will support your work no matter what. Likewise I do think traditional art will become even more valued due to AI art. If you work with traditional mediums, use it to your advantage. Always look to broaden your options too. Once you have a small community that likes your work, how can you offer your work to them? Prints are one thing, what about apparel with your art? Bags? Mugs? Etc. The world is full of options, don’t be afraid

I personally began to see that Indie Game Development is a little bastion of "AI-Proof" creation. It is a weird little chimera of many different kinds of art working together with something that AI just can't replicate yet. A clear direction and most important of all... Intent! It is a little bit like Comic Books / Graphic Novels, where the author tells their story, something so intrinsically human that makes all the components flowing into the Game click together to create an experience and/or evoke specific emotions as they surprise the players in their own interactive ways. Look at something like Undertale/Deltarune, the art by itself is not hard to replicate but then all the other parts (Writing, music, storytelling...)step in and just develop the rather simple art into something that people connect with. This is not Unique to that game. The Indie scene proves that you can make more out of less, as long as you do it with intent. That is why I love games as art. That is why they give me hope to move on and improve on my craft.
@blockhead47912 жыл бұрын
I want to make indie games one day so I have a similar mindset that you do. My worry, however, is that it will be very difficult to make a decent living off of indie game development. It is already a very hit-or-miss kind of thing - if you make something good, it may or may not be recognized by other people, and lot of it happens to be luck... This is even before this AI apocalypse really kicks off. Will people really want to take the time to play our games when they can just generate something that is 'good enough' for them? EDIT: I do not want to dash your hopes... But I think it is important to consider this. It worries me, a lot.

Even in the context of comics, where A.I. can be utilised to render comics in their entirety, there's subjectivity to storytelling and style preferences. If you've got a story to tell, someone will listen. What's most likely to be impacted is the methods of publication. It's fear out of ignorance honestly. AI will replace people when they become near-sentient or sentient which won't be for awhile. That's because a lot of art work need precision and soul (emotion and life experiences), on top of that people are naturally traditionalists. Sure there is a market for AI art but that's gonna be separate. As far as the art industry, the last thing they want is constant legal battles with being sued by multiple artists. You know while AI art might be helpful, still it I don't think it will ever replace the artists, and people who think this will even be possible (I mean the people who even wants to replace artists with AI, and is foolish to think that a living artist's effort can be replaced with a robot), it's not. It's not possible. Sorry just this whole thing brought up a quote from my old-time favorite videogame franchise, Bendy and The Ink Machine - Dark Revival, and the quote says: "Just a pencil and a dream, it's not enough. You have to have a heart." - Joey Drew

I will def not support any studio or artist that uses ai, as long as these ais use artwork of people without their consent. Dont care if this means eventually stop consuming new movies/comics and if this makes me an old women yellin at clouds.

5:20 I disgree with this especific point here, AI struggle a lot with comic books, for what I have seen until now, the storytelling is so bad that the writer needs to add captions explaning what is happening in the panel, because the AI is still unable to reach all the nuances needed to tell a good story. When these AI tools allow the user to make minor changes in the art, and change the angles, we comic book artists can begin to worry if we will be reaplaced.
@inkseer2 жыл бұрын
That may end up happening soon or later, true. But we should keep making comics anyway. I will because it's what I love to do. Edit: also Michi makes some good points about comics, in the comments down below.

Even art directors won’t be safe given there are already idea generators and AI like ChatGPT can give very organized directions of literally anything. I’m not afraid of AI making images, but if AI is used for imitating our thought process it’s going to be dystopian af because brain power is one of the very few choices ordinary people can obtain for social mobility

I decided to go into the production side of animation and I feel it is kinda sad how this will impact the growth of many artists of the industry in the third world countries, mostly because we are just starting to grow (at least in latin america where I am from) and since I know many other producers around here I know for a fact that they will do whatever they can to save money and that will lead to a TON of talent here to be displaced quicker than in more regulated industries. I will try to stick to this side of the development now that AI has kicked in and to hire human artists as much as I can while I can tbh

6:50 "I think in the long run, after people get over the hype, they're still going to resume back to human stories." I predict this to be the end result for image-generators as a whole. They're a novelty, but there's no stimulation in typing in keywords or doing image-to image. I doubt anyone who uses these programs will stay interested in them for even a year. You have no easy way to measure growth, and the process is fast and automated, it removes the fun. That's a recipe for dissatisfaction.

Ai comics is gonna be super common for artists soon because you could easily train a model on characters you designed then use AI to gen your character in different situations. Itll be AI powered and alot more content will be made from this
@carso15002 жыл бұрын
personally i think it will mostly be used to generate backgrounds, AI seem to have a problem with faces that they made them really really inexpresive, the AIs have problems expresing complex emotions that ana rtist can crack easily backgrounds meanwhile, every comic book artists hates to draw backgrounds
@Matt-st1tt2 жыл бұрын
@@carso1500 check newer models faces arnt an issue anymore for anything trained on a specific character hands can still be iffy and its still early on stable diffusion just released 2.0 a few days ago. I see the real value in an artist being able to train a dreambooth model on their own characters to decrease work in scene creation and animation for in-between key frames.
@carso15002 жыл бұрын
@@Matt-st1tt I mean more about subtle expresions, yeah AI can do really good looking faces but they are very samey, usually is the same "light smile and wide eyes" expresion, AI is really bad at subtlety you can notice this when it tries to do something too detailed This is by design, the AI doesnt really understand human emotion like we do its just using information and data to make an image based on it's training and algorithm so it's not something that can be trained away or fixed without some mayor changes to the infrastructure of the AI, i do agree that AI will have a lot of benefits and potential but it has it's limitations even if it isna very powerful tool

Imo, the only ones who should be using AI are artist and creative workers. I don’t find anything wrong with the convenience from AI other than the fact it excuses most to generate the same mediocre, unimaginative and generic visual food. Artist are the ones producing new, precise, unpredictable and experimental content- too have their work being stolen so the techbros can profit off of copyrighted work is obscene, especially when most of the work in these platforms are 90% from someone’s work who never asked for it to be used. Theft can’t be stopped but at the very least I believe people should be verified with work of their own and proof before using these as a way to use inspiration- or for new artist they should sign an agreement to protect the IP of other creatives who don’t consent to be used as “inspiration” An ai that can detect if a work is copyrighted can also be install and a watermark should be placed after the image is generated. As for photos, there can be a link to use things like Adobe stock from your personal acc or copyright free photos before the image is generated. I think the work of many should be protected, and those who refuse to respect it should face consequences even though I know laws aren’t strict in the moment to protect the work of creatives. Personally I don’t find anything about AI appealing, probably because it can’t actually “inspire” me compared to looking at references and using aspects to make my own stylistic piece. Plus the streaky, unfinished low quality and airbrushed texture looks weird :/

Let's say you have a story you want to tell in comic form.. What's to say that you can't have the ai tell that story for you/make that comic for you? It's still a human story, but the ai is just making it the way you want it. For this reason, I don't think your arguments on having human stories being a marketable factor for artists is valid. It will be a combination of both in the future i feel, where the line will be blurred between which ones are human and ai generated stories. Either way I feel the craft of making art is starting to diminish due to this technology. What future do we live in...

That's why in the video I mentioned that unless YOU yourself made a comic about yourself through AI, nobody can can create an autobiographical / memoir comic for you. An autobiographical comic by definition is an account of a person's life written / created by that person. Nobody can write an autobiographical comic FOR you, otherwise that is just considered a biography. Only you can make a story about yourself, and it is up to you whether if you choose to use AI Art for that or not, and hopefully it's the latter. If human stories weren't a marketable factor, I'm not sure why there's a huge demand for memoirs and autobiographies from underrepresented groups. Obviously you will have to make a name for yourself for people to want to read your story, but that's all the more reason to build an online presence and promote who you are as an artist behind the work.
