Mewtwo Reclaiming Its Throne | Pokemon Red Solo Challenge

Some Pokemon have forgotten about Mewtwo. As he's been in it's slumber collecting dust, multiple vanilla runs and every single cross gen run I've done have passed him but he's back today to, not only dominate, but leave no question as to who the king of the original 151 is.
On the channel we we do Pokemon solo challenges where we do several runs, fully optimize, and present to you the best that a Pokemon can look following the rules below. Today's challenge is in Pokemon Red.

►I can only use the title Pokemon in battle. No switching at all, HM Pokemon are required.
►No use of items in battle. Potions, TMs, etc. are allowed outside of battle.
►No use of skips/exploits. This includes the Pokedoll Marowak skip. Badge boost is unavoidable.
►The TMs for Double Team and Toxic are banned. Pokemon that learn similar moves naturally are allowed to use it but not the TM.
►I play on x3 speed and use the in-game time for the run along with resets to rank these runs.

Mewtwo is truly the original Uber-a legendary Pokemon at a time when no other Pokemon could come close to its power level. Even with crazy behemoths like Mega Rayquaza and Zacian Crowned, there were still other legendaries that could stand up to them in their home turf. But Mewtwo? Your best bet to deal with it was another Mewtwo.

Only a real one knows that the previous mewtwo run was not done to its fullest potential, to give hope to other pokemons before showing its true power! I find it pretty impressive seeing mewtwo's time without using any setup moves to abuse gen 1's badge boosts

Fun fact but the entire top 5 doesn't use set up moves and and only 2 in the top 13 use them. Boosting moves help but they take a lot of time to set up.

I'm late to the party with this one, but well done! I feel the fact that only Alonan Ninetales could trump Mewtwo's reign of terror says something about its 1st Gen power. Maybe more than one thing, I dunno. But there is a lost art in modern games of creating the ultimate character that's made to literally crush almost any opposition... and that it's playable. I am surprised at Mewtwo's single loss in test runs though, but it did seem plausible enough given all the factors against it. Whoops.

I'd say at least 1h 48m. That's about the threshold for a run, which Ninetales got. Hell, the world record is 1h 44m on x1 speed so I don't think you can realistically get much better than that.

Perfect op domination. Great video as always Matt! I actually never liked Mewtwo since hes just too op. As a kid I catched the one in Cerulian cave with a master ball and at first it was fun sweeping the elite four with just one pokemon but after that it got kinda boring. Appreciate you explaining the need of confusion PPs and toxic being useless in this solo run. I can't imagine anybody hitting a notably better time than this one. Especially the real life time on 3x speed sounds so fast its unreal.

I'd be interested if anyone could optimize further but outside of some luck swings here and there, I think this one is fully refined. 39 minutes of real life time is super quick. I think you could cut out things like SS Anne candy or the 10th floor candy in Silph but at the end of the day it's two very quick and weak battles in exchange for 2 late game levels. I think that outweighs the time you take to get them.

It is just busted. I really liked to see your optimized run. 3 times speed so much under 2 hours gametime is crazy (when I think about jrose's attemps at normal speed). I think, most toxic strategies against alakazam were in minimum battles runs when you can't get Body Slam. But yeah, it's just better.

In my opinion, even in some of the more current games, Mewtwo remains of the toughest. Sure, it's not a god the way Arceus is, but it has very wide access to a wide variety of moves, and impressive stats too. With the ability for it to learning a fighting special attack, an electric special or ice special attack, a psychic special attack, and move to up its special attack and special defense both at the same time, it's quite difficult to win against

No. The early game is too static and holds it, Haunter, and Gengar back along with the dumb decision to make ghosts all poison types in gen 1. It’s crazy to say held back when they all do so well but night shade only for 3 gyms, no stab moves, psychic weakness, slight hypnosis reliance make them in the mid to low 90s rather than competing at the top. The Gengar run I did was full of tom foolery near the end and I took some resets and messed around to beat a 2h 15m time since I didn’t count resets and beating Mewtwo at the time was possible. I think it can beat its original time but clean up most the resets this time.

You should look at it as helpful hints. I have a knack at being solid in the solo challenges and I’m just confident I’m my times. If you mean toxic, it’s just a really slow and bad strat. There’s a reason I ban toxic! It’s not because it’s good, it’s because it’s boring to watch and boring to play lol. But I’m the 2022 runner up, 2023 champ so I carry a little weight now, haha.
