Gen 3 Legendary Clash - Mewtwo VS Rayquaza Solo Challenge - Pokémon FireRed

Challenge Rules:
- I can only use my starter in battle.
- No items in trainer battles except held items.
- No glitches, exploits, or RNG manipulations.
First playthrough:
- No Double Team, Substitute until level 100
- 15 IVs across the board
- Cheating for information is acceptable as a last resort
Second Playthrough:
- All bets are off. Complete the game as fast as possible
- Max 31 IVs unless pursuing Hidden Power
- I will be playing these runs at 4x game speed
My footage will be edited to give what I consider a better viewing experience. This includes making cuts, fades, and adjusting the speed of the footage to match my commentary.
I use a software called "PKHeX" to edit my starter, setting things like it's Nature, and IVs to be perfect 31s, or marginally reduced to give specific Hidden Power typing to optimize strategy. All of the Pokémon I use are 100% attainable in the base game. The software allows me to create my "perfect" egg Pokémon in a much shorter timeframe.
PKHeX also allows me to set my Pokédex total to max after the Round 1 Elite 4. A requirement of Round 2 is catching 60 species and I am only interested in the potential of the Pokémon that I'm running instead of my ability to catch Pokémon optimally.

Great vid!! I had a feeling Mewtwo would win but I was really rooting for Rayquaza! (also glad that Rayquaza faced the Venusaur team, felt like I was facing it myself) I would like to see if Mewtwo could get the sub hour mark as I'm pretty sure it could without much issue. While watching the Mewtwo playthrough I was thinking about how Mew would do and while Mew does have a lot of options 100 base in every stat doesn't beat Mewtwo's higher Sp.Atk and Speed (plus having to teach all the TMs and go to the move tutors would add up on the timer) but a race between Mew, Celebi, and Jirachi would be fun to see (my money would be on Jirachi because of the Psychic/Steel typing). I wanna say the only Pokemon that might be able to compete with Mewtwo is Deoxys since even normal form has 150 Atk, Sp.Atk, and Speed and Attack form has +30 to its Atk and Sp.Atk (it would be interesting to see a race between all four forms but I don't know if there's a way to make that work, I mean I'm sure there is but I haven't looked into it)

Also one question I have, you always get the Cheri Berry on the S.S. Anne but do you also get the hidden one near the Pokémon Center before Rock Tunnel or is it too risky to get because of the trainer near the entrance? Idk if a 2nd Cheri Berry will be much help in the long run but I'd imagine it make the choice between saving one for Surge or Erika a non issue. I mean you probably do since you have another one for R2 Lance's Gyarados but I don't know if that's from Meowth or if there's a 3rd hidden Cheri Berry (besides the Rare Candies and the items on Cycling Road I have a horrible memory for all the hidden items in Gen 3 Kanto)

I have my code wizard looking at ways to make Deoxys behave the way we want. It's a question that was on my mind as well. A 3 way with Jirachi/Mew/Celebi would be a ton of fun to eggsplore. I feel like Mew might be a contender to knock out Mewtwo. Maybe.. That Fast growth rate may just offset the lack of SpA. I don't know for sure though.. Mewtwo was monstrous. I actually should be grabbing that Cheri by Rock Tunnel more often. I usually skip by it, cutting the bush beside the Pokécenter and grabbing the hidden Super Potion instead. I feel the berry is objectively more useful. It isn't too too often, but I do find myself wanting an additional Cheri/Chesto a lot of time. I'm decent with my hidden item locations, but I need to be better with my berry locations in general. They're so useful.

@@Eggsceptional I hope y'all figure out a way to get the Deoxys stuff sorted out, I didn't know Mew was in the fast growth rate, in case it might closer to Mewtwo then I thought in terms of completion time. It's thanks to your vids that I learned where a few more hidden items where, I never knew about the 2nd Lum Berry at the Pokemon League, I always thought the one in the patch of grass at Route 8 was the only one. Really wish they thought of the Berry Pots from HGSS for FRLG because those would be so useful to have.

@@Eggsceptional the Berry Pots are great but I think on average its faster to repeatedly break Rock Smash rocks after beating the first gym and trading in any Red, Blue, Yellow, and Green Shards you find to the NPC juggler outside the Violet City Pokemon Center...oh wait in terms of a timed solo run that's probably not a viable option, well the Berry Pots are just portable Berry Spots that are on you on all times, you just have to learn how many hours each Berry takes to grow and....oh wait...man I don't think the Berry Pots will help all that much. Well maybe there's some other way to get more Berries in HGSS, enjoy your holiday Eggsceptional and safe travels

My first blush turned out to be true, unfortunately: I picked Mewtwo because Rayquaza's typing was going to let it down. On to Clone-Kitty, though: Psychic Ice Beam Thunderbolt 1/2 of Amnesia How very Gen1 of you, Mewtwo. That moveset and the times it pulled should go a long way to emphasizing how much of a absolute unit Gen1 Mewtwo was, where even his nerfed counterpart still bent this game over.

eggcellent sir, truly Eggcellent you know what I have little to say on either of them, what can be said, they both did absolutely superb and rightly so given the sheer power of them both of them, I knew from the start they would dethrone Zangoose and you straight up run both of them better than Scott did in Emerald, the runs were brilliant. that being said, I want to ask about your moveset options for both. did you ever consider switching them around, Mewtwo learns bulk up and has brick break, rock slide and psychic and dominates in a different kind of way. rayquaza, I think could of gone special but I know how much you love your set up and DD is one of the best, but imagine a dragon claw, crunch, thunderbolt and I believe you mentioned surf or ice beam on it, it would never have to worry about intimidate and it would crush the game with that 150 special and a speedy nature one thing also, the sub hour possibility, I think with Mewtwo with another run or 2, it could do it, might be by a second or 2, but it can do it, Rayquaza might but it will need more to get to it, if Lorelei was easier, even a little, it could do it, tying into the special Rayquaza idea would thunderbolt or even thunder been an option to solve her the chat was fun, I think I am starting a Parasect cult at this point, I am not trying to I promise, but I think it has become a myth and a meme of a run for everyone to try and suffer through now, almost has to be tried by every runner. SS will be rough onto, if you think FR was rough and near impossible SS might be completely impossible, but I still want to see it to believe it

Thank you, thank you. These runs were so much fun to play. The routing with both though I have still questions. Mewtwo less so I feel like leaning in the base 154 special with Calm Mind is just too strong. Darn 90% Rock Slide. I would likely teach Return in the mid game though for fights like Sabrina, and skip Ice Beam entirely. Rayquaza was a much harder one to think through. I'd really like to revisit it as well as Mewtwo but with Ray I feel like going harder into a mixed special with Aerial Ace set or something would be fantastic. Surf/Crunch/Ice Beam/Thunderbolt/Dragon Claw. There's no shortage of wicked good moves. The thing with Lorelei though is that you pretty much have to one shot most of her team. I'm doubting even Ray's Tbolt range on Dewgong/Lapras. Once you're tagged once they'll all be going for Ice Beams all the time too. Ice hurt :( Yeah that's going to be a "Hey everyone, let's take the next month to figure out Parasect" during the streams. That's AFTER I'm competent with the game :P It's true. I always get so lazy in the Department Store. It's literally the first staircase up to get those TMs. By definition it's on the way to 5F where I'm going anyway! There's nowhere to use Dig either before the Department Store unless you mess up in Rock Tunnel. I think it really becomes a question of survivability with Jolteon. R1 might be fine, especially with Bruno with enough Def set up, but in R2? I'm thinking battles like Lance with everyone except Kingdra slamming you with Earthquakes? I don't know if even +6 would save you from those. I'm also foreseeing a crit Earthquake from Agatha's Arbok after missing a one shot. Not to be eggspected... but it'll happen. I feel it! That's fair enough. I just watched Scott's Rhyhorn/don video and I was enjoying remember how I got a base 50 speed Pokémon to outspeed R2 Gengar :P Little victories... But ahh the Parasect problem. Maybe I should hold a vote for it when I'm ready to bring it back. Blastoise = we love you, Venusaur = take the middle ground, Charizard = we hate you, suffer :D That's interesting that Magnitude ends up better. I would have thought that the overall consistently high damage of Earthquake would have a higher overall effectiveness. With a good Defense Curl/Rollout set up though I could see Golem causing some serious trouble for the Elite 4. Heh.. Goals. That's fair. I do know FireRed fairly well now, but only from a solo perspective. I don't know the team dynamic very well at all yet and I feel like as we've discussed it's going to force me to think in a lot new ways, particularly with EVs and the VS Seeker. I'm very much about biting off more than I can chew, but I do have to recognize my limits. I feel like everything is approaching a point where I not longer have to change anything for FireRed content, and I can just produce videos and divert my focus elsewhere. I've just been innovating so much all the time! I just checked the footage and starting as Paras I had Brock down around the 16 minute mark. Poisonpowder actually solved it, he didn't seem to care much how much his Geodude and Onix were suffering. Not like Gen 1 at all! It's been a minute and I genuinely feel like I've repressed/just forgotten large portions of that run already :P

@@Eggsceptional you are most welcome, I enjoyed the Vs immensely and you know thats fair with Mewtwo, that base special is beastly in the extreme and we all know psychic and ice beam is one of the best combos in all of Pokemon, all you need after that is something for the special walls and dark types of the post game and it is perfect, sub hour and 0 resets no problem. Rayquaza is trickier and I think leaning into its special is worth looking into but as you say the Lorelei and ice beam problem makes it a harder path to take and the lack of special EV's in the game make it harder training as well. I'd be tempted to say keep it mixed up until after Lorelei purely so you can deal with her properly and then switch to special after (half of its special set is TM and HM after all). yeah Parasect in SS is a different kind of pain for you to suffer through and I admit I do not look forward to my run of it there either, but its got to be done, you will need a few more runs of SS before you are ready for it I think, build up to it, harder and harder runs each time until the time comes (unless we all vote for it before then of course) it OK to be be a bit forgetful with the department store like that, but having access to TM's that are essentially renewable is always a plus, same with the game corner TM's and HP from the meowths (although harder to acquire). it allows for a certain amount of chop and change through places like the league where you are cut off from everything in the game. worked my Parasect run as dig and HP were needed but not both at once and I think the same will be true for the Nidos when either of us try them that is true and quite fair with Jolteon, the set up time may do more harm than good and there is always the issue of its low HP and and above a certain point a lesser special defense after many curses, all things could threaten it in the league, stally strats might be needed, but remember the AI likes status for an opening move, take advantage if that if you can for every battle where a KO might be nearby. I just watched the Rhydon run as well, very painful for Scott, he definitely borrows your sub strats for that one and you can't blame him for that, you might do better with it, especially since in the R2 you;d have SD to make use of to get more KO's in important places. I think with the parasect, its a matter of you need to face Blastoise, the double intimidates of the venasaur team might be too much and make the difference between getting a KO and being KO'd for a lot of battles. magnitude is random but its usually good, most of the time its better than dig in terms of power plus its 1 turn instead of 2 and even when its lower powered, it is still STAB and above a certain level especially on Golem with its decent attack it will be doing plenty of damage and has much more PP than earthquake and dig combined, same story with rollout, it builds and with a defense curl it starts as base 60 and with STAB thats 90, not far off of the boosted rock slide, Golem got all the right kind of love for its set and is superb for it. I can to an extent talk you through a team run of FR with the Gen 1 bugs. start the game with Pinsir as your starter, catch the early game bugs and get them up to butterfree and beedrill, use them to set up what you need on Onix, slow it down, poison it, paralyze it, whatever you need as it will hurt all the bugs badly. spreaad the ExP between them as you go, taking all optional battles for and choose where your EV's go as you do and pretty much do this for the whole game adding the remaining bugs as you go, I suggest VS seeker training early on for the EV's adding in Paras at Mt Moon, Scyther at Celadon from the game corner and Venonat at the safari zone or try catching a rarer venomoth which may hold the silver dust boosting item, I suggest this all because by level 50, no more EV training can be done and the remaining trainers will get the team to near 60 each, 60 across the time will work for R1 and minimum 65-70 for the R2, you will need to practice teams, but you get used to them, try a run perhaps using all your favorites at once to help you through and learn I think you are not far off of it at this point, you have developed much and improved much in the last year, coding will be the new beast for you to tackle and you are getting nearer to that. only 16 minutes, impressive, ok might shave 10 over with egg move Parasect. I do a similar strat with butterfree, set up hardens on the geodude and then poison the Onix, very effective. I imagine you did similar strats to me for the rest of the run, bullet seed for misty, dig for surge, aerial ace for erika, stuff like that, I suggest leaving surge until later (post Silph at least) and not worrying about set up or spore on the set until later in the run, coverage is a must for the zombie bug, sleep and set up is for when it cannot win without either

We'll see if I can maintain my ability to play while reading chat though :P I saw you might not make it to this one! I hope you get the rest you need. I'm really eggscited to build my resources on the drive out to the mountains for SS. Then in the new year I want to do Skorupi as a "guided" experience from those resources. It'll really show everyone the hidden item locations too I hope! And make my runs not take 4-1/2+ hours. Hopefully. I'm really looking forward to trying out the Nidos in the new year. I'm doing a run right now actually where I have a bit of move set shenanigans in the league. It's always such a tough thing to figure out, especially when deleting moves that you can't get back. That's true. Especially against anything that will status/add a condition to my runner. At least I know that with Jolteon if I keep Thunderbolt Lance's Gyarados won't paralyze me! His Dragonite will come out and Earthquake my face, but hey! No Gyarados is fun. That's kind of what I thought with Parasect. Charizard - Hard, Venusaur - Normal, Blastoise - Easy. I'm glad to see Scott using sub strats now! They're seriously game changing. That's fair enough, plus the Defense Curl/Rollout strats are so much fun. In this week's video I'm doing something similar :D It was a very random decision to play this Pokémon, but I hope everyone enjoys it! Magnitude might be worth holding onto until later then, teaching the EQ TM if I need the consistent damage. We'll see! I was thinking of exploring the team format as HG/SS Kanto gym leaders. Fairly diverse and fleshed out teams while still sticking to a theme. You've got that Bug run dialed in! I think I'll give it more thought when I'm slightly less insane feeling. One of the biggest things I need to do before team runs is some tweaking to the overlay. Ahh 2024. There are so many things I want to change. That's true! There are some channel related changes and bits and pieces I want to incorporate before fully commiting to the coding. I need to make my life easier in some ways before I go making it harder again :P Yeah fair enough! I'm considering a fully special set too. Slightly more risk, perhaps, relying on more turns to set up, but with STAB Giga for recovery and say.. HP Water/Psychic/hell even Dragon for full coverage. That might be something that I think about as well as opposed to pivoting between leagues. Regardless it doesn't impact needing a +Speed nature.

@@Eggsceptional I shall not comment on the effectiveness of that set for Mewtwo until I have watched the stream properly, as its the last week before Xmas here, its late night shopping all week and then the journey home on a reduced service, I'm glad I caught the last hour of the stream at least and joined you all for a while. special Rayquaza did very well and I think the set worked nicely for it, crunch is one of the best moves in Gen 3 as it covers nearly everything, although it is not so good on Steelix as it is special after all. Skorupi will be interesting to see in SS, we are all so used to it in Diamond and Pearl, there is a certain moveset and ability combo you will like it on it, a very high crit rate combo plus coverage from the elemental bite moves as a Drapion. at least the mountain drive will give you some time to work out what you need to for for SS. 2024 will be a good year for the Egg shenanigans for the league you say? I so want to ask what you've been trying but I know I must be patient and wait and see. I also know the movesets for both very well and know that any set combo will work to an extent, but jank of any kind is always a plus for some fun. I have so been looking forward to the Nidos and so look forward to seeing your run. I don't say this lightly but you better do the king and queen justice, they deserve the royal treatment. thunderbolt is definitely worth keeping for the gyrarados as well as the Aerodactyl, at least you will be out speeding it without any problems, you could take a negative speed nature and prbably still out speed, base 130 is more than enough for nearly everything in FR and the R2, in theory, setting up enough curses should prevent a KO from the earthquakes. I may have to try your sub strats for a run some day, see how much of a difference it makes, but I hate losing a move slot and thus the coverage in a solo. Blastoise might be the way to go with Parasect if you want a good run, I had a good run with that team at least. aside from the speed issue, the rival is not the real issue of R2, at least in my experience something similar to rollout/defense curl you say, could it be Azumarill perhaps, the concept of huge power for an ability must be very appealing and its egg move of belly drum. Golem does have the advantage of getting magnitude and earthquake via level up and its nice to have the option of what to use, by the time of league or perhaps the R2 the reliability of earthquake might be better for it, don't want bad luck to ruin a run after all it is try I have my bugs dialled in, but I have run them many times and each time improve and do something different, right now, its just keeping the early 3 even until I can get the big hitters EV trained and leveled up and exploring HP options as all of them are caught much more randomly and not tested in any way. thats an interesting idea for your SS/HG teams, the Kanto gym leaders have rather good teams for diversity. I'm inclined to say try Brocks Rock team, it is more than possible to get a full rock team in most games, I think if you start with a fossil and get the other fossils in the run, you can do it quite well without it being particularly painful. the full special on it is worth considering, but I would save that as an option in a VS so the early psybeam will get you through the early game, full special is hard until you get growth after all and the HP option is very important as it is the only bi coverage to consider. if it had its Gen 4 ability dry skin, I'd say go water as rain dance would give it recovery every turn and every time it is hit with a water move plus reducing the power of fire moves, my Gen 4 Parasect, especially bred for double battles has it and it is a monster paired with Kyogre

I lost focus to the chat a few times :P Special Rayquaza blew me away I did not eggspect it to do that well. I want to play so much Pokemon. I think I remember something about Drapion being awesome in Radical Red when I played that. I like coverage, I like Swords Dance, I like 95 base speed, and I like Sniper with Cross Poison, maybe somehow I'll get Night Slash? That's egg move only though. I'm looking forward to it with more resources at my back. The King and Queen absolutely deserve the royal treatment. I'm thinking about running them individually almost first so I can dedicate more time to each before trying to pit them against each other. Or going through a run togther. It's that point of trying to get set up right? Steelix/Heracross spamming EQ while you set up Curses would be rough. Maybe with a Sitrus? But you'd need Rest as well. That's 2 move slots down, then Pin Missile/Double Kick like you'd mentioned? Tbolt? Shadow Ball? Herm. Generally no, the R2 Champ isn't the biggest issue. But that's not to say he hasn't absolutely walled me a few times. I find it really depends on your answer for Heracross/what follows Hera. I find that with sub/set up you don't need to worry about coverage as much. Well we are aware of my luck in runs sometimes :P Especially with poison. But a 150 effective power attack all of the time feels pretty solid, even if the max magnitude would be higher still at 165/225. But that's only 15% of the time. Plus... EQ is one of my fave moves from when I was a kid :D I thought along the same lines. I did think though that it would make the most sense to start with the leader's Ace. Onix, Staryu, Pikachu, Oddish, Koffing, Abra, Growlithe, and well.. Giovanni/Blue/others will require more thought. Looking at that list though.. ew. Maybe I don't start like that :P I could see Parasect being quite handy paired with Kyogre. It made me so sad when I saw that Parasect didn't learn Rain Dance. That move would have completely changed how it played. I should do that. Parasect's tropical version has Rain Dance.

Just started watching. The choice to focus Physical attacks with Ray even though your facing dual intimidates is odd. D.Claw, Aerial Ace, then water pulse to waterfall, and tbolt for Fire, ground, rock, and water and flying. I think that hits everything neutral? The intimidates are fire and water/flying type for the most part right? Except like an Arbok or something? Interested to see how this goes!

Choosing physical or special for Rayquaza was a struggle. They have INCREDIBLE coverage, but I felt like the ability to set up with Dragon Dance was more valuable. I feel like this is one of those questions that can added to the pile of "To be answered in the future" and try the run again fully special. Thanks for your input :)

Maybe one day on the stream I'll revisit Rayquaza to eggsplore how a more special/mixed without DD set would have gone. Aerial Ace for Heracross/Surf for Steelix makes the Rock Tomb problem pretty much go away.

I feel a special ray-ray can be better in this game. Maybe i'm wrong, but with the base spc.atk he has is enough to crush the game and the acces to thunderbolt solves lots of the problems he has. Maybe some mix with -def +spc atk... Dont know, we should make the maths

These two are good in their games . Mewtwo destroyed kanto with coverage,and with an updated version of gen 1 amnesia, made every battle a matter of a simple set up . Rayquaza is a solid physical attcker ,that had to navigate through intimidate and the physical special spilt not in this game yet ,but overall could finish kanto in very fast manner. It would be epic to see Mewtwo finishing firered faster then this. I really liked the nicknames ,it fits the story quite a lot. In the end Frizza is stronger then the jinni dragon.😂

Which do i think will win? Mewtwo First I need to conceptualize their starting moves. If they have any special moves they clear brock easily. Im fairly confident that Mewtwo has Confusion, but I doubt raquaza has any dragon moves. *Maybe twister?* Raquaza may be slower to start. With its stats it cant get stuck for too long though. Flying is a good type in Kanto, after Brock at least. It doesnt learn many flying moves though, only ones like gust and fly that involve wind or... flying. After Brock (mewtwo likely in the lead) they have no problem with misty. Raquaza might learn Dragon Breath around here though. If so it's going to jump ahead. Surge, Rockets, Erika post no threats. No rival battles they can't deal with. Raquaza sweeps Sabrina with high speed and attack. But Mewtwo needs to use Thief, Shadowball(if its available yet) or a physical move for Sabrina. After that they go back to steamrolling. Straight to the E4, where Raquaza is technically in trouble with Lorelei but probably sweeps through. Mewtwo has no bad match ups at all, and could only maybe be slowed down against 1 or 2 of Lance or Blue's pokemon. Raquaza could take a nasty dragon claw towards the end there. I think with no dark types to get in the way, you too consistently has no problems because at the very least it can get thief to deal with psychic types. If not shadow ball. Or even brick break if you go to the department store. Rayquaza has occasional hiccups if and only if it is missing good dragon moves to use it special attack. I haven't looked at the move list or anything so I'm going to have to bet on Mewtwo.

I didn't expect Misty to be a problem for Mewtwo. Mostly because I assumed it would be a little higher level. I also thought Thief was where Secret Power is (oops. Wouldn't have been great against starmie I bet) I'm also surprised you didn't grab a TM to teach for Sabrina but I guess it would slow you down more than just attacking 2-3 times over 1-2. Overall I was right (for the first run) but I did forget you are the channel of it does the second round of the elite four so I didn't account for tyranitar.

I absolutely loved reading through all of this. What a fantastic and in depth prediction, thank you! I feel like my biggest issue with Misty was that I chose Mega Punch. Secret Power AND Mega Kick both would have been better options. Thief actually is available before Cerulean (second ladder down on the way through Mt.Moon). Mewtwo can't learn it though! I wanted it.. That Slow growth rate yeah. Unless I'm intentionally facing a bunch of extra trainers the Slow growth Pokemon are usually at that point around 19-21. If I were to go back and run Mewtwo again I'd use Return for Sabrina. It just makes sense. Tyranitar wasn't honestly a threat for either in these runs. In other videos he's been monstrous, but not today. Thank you for all of your input :)

I just recently wrote a lot about ROM hacking pokémon games so, my analytic mind was tingled. Besides that, Mewtwo cannot learn thief??? I always thought it should have become a dark type, based off of the movie and stuff. But it does learn dark moves. And even physical ones so, I don't know why thief would be unavailable to it? Maybe they thought it was beneath such a powerful creature! 🤣 It's still hard to think that it cannot learn it, but Abra and Drowzee can!

I was floored by this, in the first run I even went down the ladder to get Thief before realizing that it couldn't be learned. I'm not sure! Maybe it is in a newer generation. Making my guess at the very start im guessing the Mewtwo is going to take it, Having access to Bolt/Beam Psychic and Calm mind should sweep most of the game. But Rayquaza may surprise me, but Psychical/special split really hampers alot of pokemon

I wonder if it's possible to improve Rayquaza by giving it a -Def+Sp.A nature? It overkills a lot with flying Stab, even with aerial ace, because it as DragonDance. But with a +Sp.A it might clear Brock, Misty, and Surge faster. And have a little easier time against Agatha. Not sure if it could use Tbolt to do Lorelei any faster though; without Special Attack set up that is.

Random pokemon thought, I wanna do some free time runs comparing gen 1-3 mons who's offensive strengths match their type. I.e. special types with high special and physical types with high attack. Some of my favorites were always mons like Jynx, Houndoom, and Lanturn who have high special and all special stab moves or vice versa with Golem, Dodrio, and Heracross (i.e. my favorite mon ever) who all have physical stab with high attack. Makes me think of how awful sneasal is with only special stab.

Yeah they waited until gen 5 to start making legendaries with higher offensive stats than mewtwo….. Technically kyogre has a higher damage output with stab water moves in rain…. And then the lati twins with soul dew but that’s banned….
