Some are genuinely great like Haunter and Snorlax, while some are just hilariously off model by current standards like bull terrier Growlith and melting Machop and some are nightmare fuel like Mr. Mime the sleep paralysis demon and deranged Golbat. I am always jumpscared by Ivysaur rearing back unnaturally on its hind legs. Baby Sandshrew is precious though and should be protected at all costs. #MDBAMA

Magnemite doesn't have Levitate as an ability in any generation. The closest thing it has for levitation is Magnet Rise, an Electric move that makes Ground moves useless for 5 turns.

Even without the Steel type, having ridiculous Special seems to be really good for Gen 1 Magnemite. Spoilers below: I think Mimic would’ve solved some problems Magnemite faced in the late game, most notably Giovanni, Bruno, and the champion. If you don’t know, Mimic lets you select a move that the opponent has and use that for the rest of the fight. For Giovanni, you can Mimic Dig for super effective damage moving forward, also setting up Reflect early to reduce Dugtrio’s damage output. Bruno can have Ice Punch from Hitmonchan mimicked, while the champion can have Psychic mimicked for the sake of Rhydon. That last one is risky for sure, but I think it’s a worthwhile risk.

Exactly what I did in my run, Mimic is the way to go, especially when your only good damaging move against Rhydon and Onix is Double-Edge. I also chose to Mimic the first Dragonair's Hyper Beam during the Lance Fight to make it faster. Though, I used a simple Take Down + Rest in my Voltorb run so this could have worked with Magnemite too.

I don't know if you want suggestions for future runs, but - An Assist-only run, in which you can use any Pokemon and any moves in your *party* and are encouraged to. The twist is that the only Pokemon you can actively use must only have Assist, relying on the choice of moves from teammates. Going through a cave? Bring a water type and hope to spam Water Gun. Fighting gym? Grab a Psychic/Flying type and use Psybeam or Wing Attack to your hearts content... Sort of! Edit : optionally, have a minimum number of moves or Pokemon so Assist isn't guaranteed to be a move.

(1:51) Rest is NOT weaker in Gen. 1 due to that reason. You actually lose the same two turns as usual. It's just that you wake up one turn sooner in Gen. 1, but waking up costs you a turn, so it balances out. (I suppose Gen. 1 Rest could be considered weaker for other reasons, like how you can be statused by the opponent on the turn you wake up, or how Rest doesn't fix status-based debuffs like the Speed drop from Paralysis.) I ended it around the same level. i only did it because Magnemite is my favorite Gen 1 pokemon and I was gonna do a series of solo runs with my favorites for each Gen, but I also can't keep up with stuff between work, photography, and just trying to do every day life. Oh hey, speaking of Sandile, have you ever heard of Pokemon Unova Red? Its a romhack of the original red that works kind of similarly to team training. The difference is that instead of swapping all the pokemon for fighters, it swaps all the kanto mons for unova mons. I could definitely see an april fools run with that!

Self Destruct and Explosion is worse than halving your defense, it halves Base Defense for damage calculation, so it nukes all defense buffs you might have too.

Over the years, I've learned that pokemon can learn... interesting moves that make no sense. 1:27 attests to that as Magnemite, an electric sentient metal ball with magnets, can teleport out of a cave back to the nearest pokecenter. Gen 1 everyone.

Err... small thing, but Rest ISN'T really worse in gen 1 than other generations. Sure, pokemon don't attack on the turn they wake up, but at this point they only sleep for ONE turn, so one turn of sleep and one turn waking ends up being the same amount of inactive time as two turns asleep. It's still SLIGHTLY worse, as you can get status conditions on the turn you wake up, but it's so negligible a nerf that it's not really considered.
