This is a reupload. Something about the unlisted original upload completely neutered the views. I don't care about getting all the views, but my community and fanbase wasn't getting notified of the video and we had to correct that so here we are.
It's time for my second race for Scott's Thoughts. This one was with Smeargle in generation 1, so a cross gen run like we have seen before but Smeargle is very unique and it was very fun.
Unlike the last race, the time was significantly shorter and it allowed routing and consistency to take the lead rather than luck, and that was a great thing.
Last time, I barely lose due to the a minor mistake and the AI critting me. Can we find redemption this time? Let's find out and I mean that because I have no idea where I placed.

Damn Matt that was epic comeback. RNG took away and gave it back. I assume that collecting materials, playing and producing its quite chalenging for Scott but its also a very fun content for us, 30+ boys who still remeber how fun it was discovering this awesome series and spending hours playing it. Hope in a future you guys will make more races. Also i've just recently watched you and Scott gastly race and that format worked well too so hopefully you guys make some videos togheter as well. That kind of cooperation worked rly good for other yt creators (PM7, Purplecliff and Mikey for example or Jaiden Animation, PC and Alphared soul links series) and I fell like it would worked well for you guys too.

Yea it was pretty fun. The competition is fun and the stream was fun. In hindsight I would have prepared for the stream but the concept was blind runs with zero optimization that led to a video where we optimized together but it just fell through. I think I’ll finally get around to Gastly optimization in October. It’s safe to say the collab video won’t happen with that but maybe we’ll stream again sometime.

Watching this video knowing you won the race, I was really surprised to see how many mistakes you still had in this run, and how much timesave there still was here! That said, I think you won this race with really good routing. I think a lot of us probably saved rare candies until later in the run because it takes longer to level up later in the game, but for smeargle, it needed the levels earlier to speed up fights and remain consistent in the midgame. Sleep powder carries it through the late game regardless, so the extra few levels in the late game were clearly not nearly as valuable as the extra levels early on, so your early training and early rare candies were really valuable! Also, I find it funny that you said no vitamins was probably the best strat for smeargle. I figured a huge source of my time loss was not knowing how to route in the vitamin buys very efficiently, but it turns out my inexperienced lucked in to a good strategy there! Congrats on winning the race! I learned a lot from watching this! :D
@GymLeaderMatt1987
@GymLeaderMatt1987 Жыл бұрын
For sure. I mean with 20 base attack, a protein just doesn't do anything that changes the game and the speed is good enough to just outspeed everything outside of Lance's Aero. Just cutting everything out was the best approach but this is a pretty rare case. The focus was the midgame for sure. I felt like people got caught up having the best Brock/Misty/Surge split that their Nugget Bridge/Rock Tunnel sections were slow and me being 35 put everything in comfortable ranges to breeze through it. Invest time early and shave off time late was the motto! I always wish we knew a little bit more about what Scott would talk about though because blindly doing a video just feels like I'm repeating a lot of points but it was a fun time and a good run. I'm just glad the second race in a row with elite 4 problems didn't cost me again. I even routed in two extra Victory Road battles and the last candy to ensure it didn't happen and it STILL did lol.
@redwings13400
@redwings13400 Жыл бұрын
I have a question. Based on the final strategies of the top players, it feels like the physical strategy was the best strategy for Smeargle. If Scott had changed Smeargle's special attack to 40, do you think the special strategy would have been faster than physical? How about at 30 if Scott had used the average of the two stats? I'm mostly wondering because I feel like it would be interesting to figure out the break point where these two completely different strategies would have actually been completely equal times. Physical strategies seemed to have some inherent advantages in the early and midgame because of STAB, and also because it was easier to get physical moves early, but would additional special attack have changed that dynamic?
@GymLeaderMatt1987
@GymLeaderMatt1987 Жыл бұрын
I don't think it would make that much of a difference. You saw how far behind the special strats were even with Amnesia. He'd have to bump it up to like 80 special to close the gigantic gap between the top few times and the fastest special time.

Thanks! Yea, I wish my Brock split wasn't so bad and that Lorelei wasn't so awful lol. I routed in extra trainers and the last rare candy to get to 60 to make her better but it just completely backfired. I could have skipped the candy/extra battles and just saved a minute but it was the midgame where I gained so much ground where even mistakes at the end didn't matter. Sometimes doing a little more shaves off time as you go on while some people think the fastest Brock/Misty/Surge split means anything in the grand scheme of things.

Commenting again for *engagement*. Even though you're not planning on doing any more Smeargle runs, I think it would be really funny if someone out there did a "max potential" Smeragle run where it started out with moves from later generations too. Like maybe give it Spore, Victory Dance, Oblivion Wing, and something else for coverage (Earthquake or even Headlong Rush for the extra power?). Just for fun to see how Smeargle with an unrestricted moveset would fare. If any fellow commenters feel inspired, feel free to run with the idea.
@GymLeaderMatt1987

I get that but the whole point of Smeargle is an exercise in knowing enemy trainers and move locations. Starting it with actual moves just makes it not Smeargle, imo.

Yea, the goal was level 25 going into Nugget Bridge and 35 for Rock Tunnel. Those are the two slowest parts of the game when I timed other runs and speeding them up knowing you'd just be using sleep powder later anyway yielded by far the best results. Lorelei didn't play nice but at least it didn't cost me anything. It's still a pretty jank run. I lost a potential 2 minutes just on the brock split so it would have been cooler to see a flawless sub hour run but the ending wouldn't have been as interesting.

Well at the time I got this one (the Saturday after the race started Friday) I saw some 1h6m times and I was already in the 1h4m range so I timed portions of the game and you know I always preach nugget bridge so speeding that up and rock tunnel were the slowest parts of the game. Dont be too hard on yourself. The fact that you had top time on both of the races means you know what youre doing and you definitely could put superior time if you did multiple runs after this. Outside of the competition and just having fun, it really doesn't do much for the channel. I could probably get 2+ full videos done in the time it takes to do the full race and prepare the video. The sad fact of the matter is that maybe a hundred people will be curious enough to see what the top players do, but the race videos perform worse than regular videos so at the end of the end of the day, it's just about testing your skills and I feel like I've already put them on full display through a couple of races.

If the goal was to cheese the elite 4 what would your strategy be? (Rules being start loreli at lvl 60 with whatever moves you could find before E4)
@GymLeaderMatt1987
@GymLeaderMatt1987 Жыл бұрын
That was essentially the run. Find the best moves and dominate the game with a Pokemon with awful stats lol. It doesn't get much better than a 2 stage setup move, sleep move, and two attacking moves to cover everything.
@joshgregory1763
@joshgregory1763 Жыл бұрын
@GymLeaderMatt1987 I guess spore or if you could get body slam or hyper beam would make that elite 4 a little better. You got me with the delayed tombstoner 😆
@GymLeaderMatt1987
@GymLeaderMatt1987 Жыл бұрын
Those would make it more consistent but not faster, as we saw in the race video. The act of sleep and set up is cheese enough in itself. You can only improve the chances of that and the knock out from that point but the question is if it'll cost you too much time to get those. Spore was sadly too much of a time sink to worry about.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987losing in the lab actually IS the correct play according to Scott because cloyster is awful, and JOLTEON actually outspeeds smeargle at rival 6 unless you have 3 dances n champion battle you're OUTSPED period That's why Ottos run fell off to an extent Otto was the only good run that did jolteon most DID a carbon copy of your run actually except they saved candies a bit too much or had worse routing

I’d rather face Flareon tbh. The Vaporeon is too bulky and almost cost me at the end. I was just taking what the game gave me though. I got this time on the Saturday before the race and just couldn’t top it.

Nicely done. I think it was cool the way you used dig against the farfetched in order to sketch swords dance. Also I am liking this quicker time frame for the races. I think it actually separates the Pokémen from the pokeboyz.

I watched scotts video and i will say i was on the edge of my seat pulling for you brother. That was so sick watching you get that dub! Also watched your run till the end #realone. I was so stoked you won. Especially because you always go for thet consistency! Nothing drives me more crazy than when people do a run fish for perfect rng. If thats how you do it then it has nothing to do with your pokemon and its all just luck.

Thanks! I’ll take some risks but I’m never going for a 30% chance over and over outside of a fire type waiting for Gyarados to miss lol. Much like speedrunning, you want something consistent enough where you can just get reps in and complete solid runs rather than 1/1000 chances lol. That’s why I hated the Parasect race. Like the winner had a 2 encounter Viridian Forest and a 3 encounter Mt Moon. Good job lol.

Nice win! What do you think about body slam vs hyper fang after having seen some of the other runs?
@GymLeaderMatt1987
@GymLeaderMatt1987 Жыл бұрын
I think the win speaks for itself in that regard. When you get Body Slam, you can use it for like 8 battles max. Hyper Fang made the slowest parts of the game faster and the only way anyone was doing better than Hyper Fang was to continue to play the race weeks after it was over and all strats were revealed.

Personally I think its the depth you put into your runs. And I think there is something poetic of having the one with multiple mistakes being the best time.

It just shows how solid it was. The Brock split was easily 2 minutes slower than it was in some of the other runs and Lorelei cost me a minute to itself. I think we could have seen a sub 1 hour with this route but it wasn't in the cards and it wouldn't make for as compelling of a video if I just stomped by multiple minutes anway.

You've been around a long time and I appreciate that! Always the biggest supporter. I got some undergrad stuff coming up but I want to do some 'world record' attempts at the actual R/B speedrun one day. Top 100 would satisfy me but I think with the solo run experience, I might be able to tweak the world record routes a little and maybe get a solid time. Maybe sub 2h would be the starting goal, then if I ever got sub 1h 50 we can look further. It's something I've been really interesting in for a while but I'm always so worried about keeping up with content but a solid rank in a highly touted category would have a lot more weight than a niche solo run with software, imo. Just some things I've been thinking about.

@@GymLeaderMatt1987 ah, that actually makes sense...since the cursor auto-moves to END after the 8th character, compared to however many frames 'lost' while your fingers hit the individual buttons... im more interested in how it Pre-Sets the name no matter what was typed though...that could make it a little bit easier just for cranking out video after video on these challenges-- any time you need to Reset, you can just Turbo-A through the intro again without having to make sure that everything is typed perfectly for the video (compared to getting a Perfect Run, just to realize in editing that your Player Name was "Gum Leaser Math" or whatever)...i just like seeing all these nifty little 'mods' people have come up with for this almost-30 year old game... ...holy crap, pokemon is almost 30 years old...i should be expecting grey hair soon, at this rate xD

That's the secret, brother. In my videos the names are always set, even for the Pokemon. It's essentially a flag you freeze so it stays the same no matter what. These days, I just have my name/rival name hard coded into the ROM since the in game timer doesn't start until you get to your room but you could just freeze them and do the same thing. I just do it so Pokemon can be named and not actually cost them time.
