I show you how & why clean your BBQ grill grates with half a white onion. I then grill up some Cross Cut Beef Ribs seasoned with only salt & pepper, Jalapeno's stuffed with Philadelphia Cream Cheese wrapped with bacon & Asparagus wrapped with bacon both seasoned with Lawry's Garlic Salt. I also grill up some vegetable skewers which consist of mushrooms, green bell pepper & red onions. I then chug a 12oz (355mL) Bud Light Platinum 6% alc./vol. slim can.

When I was 18 I moved to a small town Ligonier, Indiana and I the entire town was hispanic. Never in my life had I felt out of place in the US, not in a bad way. but It was like an amazing culture shock. All the Hispanics & Puerto Ricans Owned just about every store in town, There was a big mexican market, mexican bakery ( the smell and sweets were to die for). The few White people and 1 black family nicknamed it Lil Mexico. I wish I still lived there, it was the best time I'd had in my life and the Best food Ever!! I know this is a Novel but I lived in a trailor court (a nice one) and I was surrounded by Hispanic Neighbors whom all had Nice Custom Cars. When the men went to work early in the morning the women came outside cleaning their drive ways. I'd never seen someone clean their drive way before every single day but the women scrubbed them happily as their kids played. The Park smelled of Suavitel and Fabuloso (If you have never used them your missing out!). Long story short This is how I learned of the Onion trick, was watching my neighbor whom cooked out year round in the Summer, Rain and snow. Ive been using the onion on my grill ever since!

Thumbs up Mano! I picked up the onion trick from a cat from Hong Kong about fifteen years ago. I've been using it ever since. Also: at the end of your barbecue, after wire brushing your grates, go over them again with the onion before storing them. No rust, (or varnish from using oil) and the more times you use this method on the grates, the easier it will be to clean them each time at the end.

Right on, brother! My friend showed me this trick, and now that I clean the grates with an onion, that gives me more points in being a BBQ grillmaster. You're right, not only does the onion acidity cleans residue from previous cooks, but when that onion scent hits the air, it makes your guests' mouths water even more !

I do the same only have a small bowl that the half onion will fit in and use Extra Virgin Olive Oil to dip the onion in. About an 1/8" is good. This doesn't only add seasoning to the cast grates (better than the stainless steel) but also keeps your meat from sticking to the grill. Yes the grill still looks dirty, but I agree with the Vato and look at it as being seasoned.

Onions also kill anaerobic bacteria and many viruses which is said to be why chicken noodle soup is good for you while sick. A medical study on the old wives tail of an open onion next to the bed while sick is true to help you get better. Good choice for cleaning man. I never thought of it and am going to try it once this hurricane passes and I can grill outside again.

Cross contamination? Lol that's funny. Do you even cook food? You do know that all that food is cooking on a 400 deg grill right? There is no contamination once it's cooked, especially after an hr. By your logic you should never mix any type of meat because on contamination. So no beacon wrapped anything, no kabobs. You completely failed at trying to sound intelligent.

Just a mention, a great way to super clean a grill grate is to get it really hot, then dip your brush in water. The resulting steam from rubbing the grates will super-clean the grease and anything. The Onion has a lot of H20 in it, so it does that a little bit but not as much as as a dripping brush. I don't have to do that very often but it works like crazy. Also, try cooking with Lump charcoal works well, gets hot and lasts a long time.

When my bbq get warm i take vegetable oil and put it on double paper towels then rub the paper towels on the grill. This is done after i clean the grill in soap and water. By doing this it helps so that the meat doesn't stick to the grill as well as it get rid of any leftover old food pieces that I missed.

Yellow & Red onion should do the trick too. I usually use white onion since that is what I always have on hand when I make my cookouts because white onion is what I use in making Pico de Gallo. Sometimes ppl use half a potato as well which will work but won't give off that pleasant aroma you get with an onion.

Mex - Great tip. You are right the smell is great. Also if any bristles are left behind from brushing the onion should knock it off the grill. Extra safety.
