That's when my love of Mexico started to....as a kid in the 60s and 70s camping in Baja, shopping in TJ (yes, for food!) and later as an adult. I always felt happier and like I flt the culture better when I was in Mexico and the U.S. was such a mismatch for me. Took a while to realize my dream to stay permanently but now been here in central Mexico for almost 2 years.

Hola Jose y Christian! Hola @HiddenKnowledge! I first fell in love with Mexico and it's people when I surfed a hurricane swell at La Fonda/Alisitos in 1979! I have been coming back ever since and decided a long time ago that I would retire here early if I could. I moved to Ensenada from the Malibu/Ventura area of CA late 2022 and consider it the best thing I have ever done for myself. I still surf but I'm spoiled after surfing all around the World since I was 10 and semi pro in the early '80's. I'm getting older and some days I'm a little slow getting to my feet. On those slow to my feet days I imagine people watching me from the beach saying "Gosh, you really have to give that old guy some props for trying to learn how to surf at his age." The surfer with biggest smile is the one having the most fun... BTW-I'll pat myself on the back and brag a little.... I was rated #1 in the CA NSSA Masters in '83 and got 5th place in the NSSA US Championship in '84! Mucha suerte desde la hermosa Ensenada!

Why am I here? Because I LOVE México!! 🇲🇽 Some of us are made for México. 🇲🇽 And some are not. I think you have to have a little grit to live here... and an ability not to be consumed by other's fears. In my 20s, in the 1980s, I lived and worked in San Diego. Tijuana and Rosarito were my playgrounds. Discoteques, Shopping, Comida, Las Playas, Puerto Nuevo (Lobster Camp), Papas & Beers, and Camping in the Sand Dunes. I had Mexican amigos, and they watched over me. I also have local friends where I live now, and they keep my well-being in check. Life is great here in MX... but if you're only coming to save a dollar, you might consider other options... because México deserves more respect than that. 🇲🇽 ¡¡Viva México!! 🇲🇽

How about the Mexicans (born and raised here) that put down the country based on the reality of corruption and violence?? Several great friends have had to leave the city they were born in because of these issues. They are very sad for Mexico as well as upset. Ciudad Juárez, Reynosa, Sinaloa as well as other cities. Family and Friends have lost their lives in Michoacán Oaxaca Colima Jalisco.... 😢😢😢. Have you ever tried to own an avocado farm? Coffee farm?? Bar / restaurant in one of these cities? No bueno.

José, you made so many good points here and touched on so many topics, that I had to leave a comment. It's hard to know where to begin. Okay, I pay about a hundred dollars more a month in rent than you. I doubt that my apartment is any nicer than your place, but I just wanted to point that out, perhaps Oaxaca city is more pricey than Merida, but that's neither here nor there my monthly expenses are about the same as yours, but maybe a little less. I have been in México for about four years and I've loved it since I first stepped out of the airport in Puerto Vallarta. I've tried to explain to family and friends back in the states how different life is here, but I don't think they as yet understand what I mean. Being a life long pedestrian this country was like a godsend to me and being in walkable communities is something I will never tire of. And with that having all the shopping I need within a few minutes of my doorstep by foot can't be beat. And not just shopping, but banks, pharmacies, restaurants, bus lines and public squares too. And the layout of most cities is done to a human scale so everywhere feels confortable and like a place you want to be. I could go on and on, but let me add I came to Mexico not so much for comfort, but for freedom. You see I'm a black/mixed race woman of transgender experience and honestly, I was fleeing america. Most people can't know what my life has been like, but I assure you México has been a blessing. I have felt and been safe here, I can confidently get healthcare, I can walk freely without fear of being harassed or assaulted or verbally threatened or told that I am going to hell for being a sinner all these things which most people take for granted, I have this now in my life and I lived in several cities back in the states over the course of many years. My only negative about moving is that I wish I could have done it sooner, but I'm so grateful that this beautiful country has accepted me, and I now have legal residency and I feel on some level I can truly say, I am a Mexican!

Thanks for another great video my friend! I owned a car here in Mexico for a while. It’s much cheaper for me to take an Uber, DiDi, etc. than to own a car. I generally walk to the bank, the store, the pharmacy, but when I need to go far I just hop into an Uber (I’m using this term generically). I don’t have to worry about maintenance, gas, insurance, repairs, tires, car wash, white knuckles (Guadalajara has a lot of traffic), etc. And it’s cheap! Most of the time I spend anywhere from $50 to $100 ($2.58 to $5.16 US dollars) to go just about anywhere I need to go. Fantastic!

I just drove to Jalisco from Nevada and back. It's about $125.00us to fill my tank from empty in the U.S. It cost me on average $179.00us in Mexico. I filled up 5 times total while in Mexico. Still has a blast. 33gal / 125liter Fuel Tank

I know I already left a comment, but I wanted to add another one and that is I have to say something about the beauty of Mexican cities. They speak to my artistic soul and fill me with joy all the time. You talked about how cookie-cutter and monotonous US cities are and you're right, they are, but the same can't be said about cities in Mexico. I can walk to the old Centro here and marvel at the cobble stone streets and the large 16th century stone buildings that are still in use and delight in the many colorful murals that decorate so many building facades. And in the neighborhoods I smile at the brightly painted houses and the flowering bushes and trees that seem to be blooming everywhere. These cities are a visual feast and I doubt I'll ever tire of them or be bored. I don't have to leave my house as I can see the blue sky overhead and the green mountains in the distance while I make coffee or wash dishes. Life in Mexico is so good.

Is Mexico a cash heavy place? I am wonder how to avoid cash street scams.Or cash scams I am not aware of. Ex: I give a guy $20 for something that is $6. The guy gives me $4 back. And when confronted he says I gave him $10. I am more looking for how can you avoid situations like this. These are situation that occur with cash and not card

Yes Cash is King out here in Mexico. Best way to deal with situations like that is to ALWAYS carry change. If they dont have change for a large bill then you either pay with your own change, or you simply go get change elsewhere and then come back and pay. Even in Germany people will use a bus. There was another channel I watched for a while. A woman had moved to Germany. She was showing the differences between the US and Germany. She said when she went shopping for her groceries. She walked to a bus stop to get to the grocery store. It the US this doesn't happen unless you don't have a car. But in Germany the people who use a bus aren't looked down upon as if they're too poor to have a car. It's a normal thing to use public transportation to get around. She said after buying her groceries she has to rush to fill up her grocery bags so the checker can get started on the next customer.

I like your videos, you've got a good attitude and understanding about living in Mexico as a foreigner, however, I wonder why do you keep on talking about moving to Mexico to gringos, like going deeper on topics to convince them. Gringos have been coming to live and or travel to Mexico since the 60s, the ones that like it stay, it's usually the more open minded ones and more culturally compatible ones, independently of how much money they have; and other leave soon because they realize it is not for them. This has been like a natural filter that works well. Retirees, artists, organic farmers, students out of university looking for their calling, employees from big companies, hippies, writers, people who want to start a shop or business, people who are half the year here and half a year in their country of citizenship. We are getting many gringos since the living conditions have gone down so much in the US and that's ok, they find an alternative for their life, as everyone should, but then with the pandemic way more people and gentrification boomed in many spots of the country, like Merida; then lots of youtubers are making so many videos about how to move to Mexico and keep on pumping videos with more and more about doing the move, and I think that has been part of the tremendous growth of gentrification. People hear from a friend or get the idea from a trip they did down here, they do some research, give it a try for six months or a year, then they decide to move over here or not. We cannot accommodate so many people that consume so much (as even an average US person, let alone one that wants more and more luxury), man, the planet itself does not have the resources to accommodate so many of these big consumers. How about you talk more about Mexican people and their ways, the ecosystems in Mexico, different cities, types of food, history, whatever, there is a lot you can talk about beyond trying to convince more gringos to adapt their expectations and habits and come to Mexico. If they don´t have those habits and mind frame, better not convince them. Just a thought. Be well.

I started making videos many years ago before there were many other youtubers doing so. My Parents escaped Communist Cuba and were able to find the American Dream in the USA. Now 40+ years later many Americans are now finding themselves in a similar situation. The country is going down the toilet and all they want is to live in peace. That is the main reason I am making these videos. To show those people that would fit into Mexico that there is a solution and an alternative to the lives they are currently living. I have also made many videos about the topic of gentrification in Mexico as well. I understand your concerns but if you actually look at the stats more Mexicans are returning back to Mexico these days than leaving Mexico. But no one talks about that.... Anyways there are many sides to this and i agree with you Mexico has no room for people who do not want to work and assimilate to Mexican culture. Either way I encourage you to check out the rest of my channel and my videos for more context as to why I do what I do. Just trying to offer a little bit of hope to all those in desperate need of it right now. At one time it was Mexicans and other immigrants moving into the USA now the Land of Opportunity is here in Mexico. This not a problem only unique to Mexico. I appreciate your point of view, Diosa, but most KZbin channels have a theme and this one is dedicated to people who are considering a move to Mexico. There are other channels that address the subjects you suggested. As far as Merida goes, the wealthiest people who have moved there recently are Mexicans coming from other states within the country. As a matter of fact, there have always been extremely wealthy Mexicans in Merida. They own the hotels in Cancun and other beach resorts. About 10-12 years ago, I drove from Centro to Progreso, and streets and utilities were being laid out for all the new housing you see now. This was long before the pandemic. I think tourists/nomads stood out and there were more of them, because Mexico was one of the few countries that stayed open. The country, Mexico, has decided to promote and develop Yucatan not only for tourism, but industry, too. Not well known is that the new Tren will eventually hook up with Amtrak in the US and go all the way to Canada to bring goods from Yucatan, both argo and manufactured, to new markets. Sad in some ways if you like Yucatan the way it was, but that's progress, I guess. Anyway, what's happening in Yucatan and the rest of Mexico has little to nothing to do with a few retirees and digital nomads renting an Air BnB. P.S. François-Henri Pinault, who is married Mexican actress, Salma Hayek and a multi-billionaire, just bought a large hacienda in Yucatan to turn into a luxury resort. That's the direction Yucatan is going in, for better or worse.

I watched the whole video and watching the drive through so many neighborhoods something came to mind. How is the mail delivered? Is there a central mailbox or PO boxes, or is mail delivered directly to a home address? Same question for packages.

Great question! Mexico doesn't get daily junk mail like in the USA. I have the Mexican Postal worker come and hand deliver mail to me during the few times I have had a letter sent to me. As for packages they also only deliver to an individual unless instructed to do otherwise. If you are not home and they can slip it through the gates they will not leave it on the doorstep, they will just wait till the next day and try again then. receiving mail and packages here in Mexico is much easier than back home. In fact I very rarely think about "mail" since no one really gets mail out here. Things like the light bill or water bill are delivered by employees of those companies. Life is so much better without all that junk mail.

seems like its everywhere. I live in Southwest Florida and have experienced a lot of 'entitled' people that speak only Spanish and DEMAND that everyone around them either speak it or get someone that does to translate for them. Not sure about the walking stuff, Jose. I don't remember seeing much walking going on between the hours of 11am to 6pm. It's just way too hot to be traipsing round. The one exception would be market areas, where you do see people being a bit more active. There's also the historic centre, but it's mainly the tourists who are doing the walking (the locals are there for work mainly, not to hang out or exercise). Mexicans are also definitely car people - they tend to buy a car at the first financial opportunity, even if they have to pay for it in installments. Also, I wouldn't describe the average Yucateco as slim - they tend to be on the plump side, especially after a certain age. I love walking and I love the heat. In Merida, I used to walk 25 minutes to the nearest supermarket and walk back with the bags in the blistering heat. I'm pretty sure the neighbours thought I was a nutcase.

I think what people fail to realize when they make such a big move is that the reason they did so to begin with was because they NEEDED and WANTED a Giant change in their lives. Yet as soon as it is there staring them right in the face they refuse to change. Expecting EVERYTHING around them to Change not realizing that the one that needs to actually change is the person themselves and putting yourself in a situation where everything is different Forces you to change. For example if you are visiting a country where the women are required to cover their face and you are with a woman, best she covers her face or maybe not visit. Seen many people from the US, Canada, UK,... Get arrested (or worse) in other countries for thinking they were above the rules or not wanting to pay a "toll" or "fee". While visiting most countries, you can be rude or you can be poor, but never both at the same time jejeje

I enjoy your videos and I know you love Mexico. But consider visiting Thailand sometime where I go from time to time from California. The people are very warm and welcoming. It has tropical weather like Yucatan but not as hot averaging 80 degrees but very humid. The exchange rate stays around 33 baht to 1 US dollar so a person on $1500 a month can live very well. And if you live outside Bangkok (or other touristy city) in the coutryside you can live like a king on that income! One visit and you just might fall in love with that country : )

I would like to move to a Spanish speaking country. I am planning a trip to Mexico and was thinking of visiting Puebla, Queretero and another smaller city. If I am able to move to Mexicao I prefer to live somewhere that I would be in a Mexican neighborhood as long as it is safe. It seems that Queretero is getting expensive. Both Queretaro and Puebla have a population of 1.5 million people, they shouldn't be considered "smaller cities" Just saying... There are plenty of great cities to live in Mexico and most cities are relatively safe especially when comparing them to the S Chicago area. Some are not but those are mostly well known and easy to stay away from. A lot goes into choosing a nice place to live in. Mexico is big country, just do your research. Buena suerte!

Prices have gone up everywhere... except for a few countries in Europe that I'm looking into sometimes its better to buy a house with land already on it so that you don't have to purchase separately...I'm noticing that instead of renting it might be in your best interest to buy a little something cheap and fix it to your liking...I have seen a lot of houses that aren't that expensive that just need a little TLC but it's yours and at least you won't have to worry about the exchange rate and not knowing what your rent will be from month to month in my opinion

Yo he visitado algunos paises alrededor del Mundo y siempre he sabido planificar bien mi dinero sin limitarme en difrutar de mi vida. Ese es el key para poder tener una vida placentera sin estress ninguno. La proxima vez que visite Merida me dara mucho gusto conocerte en persona. Actually in the US these days you can get paid more by the Government to be poor than if you were to get a low skill minimum wage job 😅They actually pay people to be poor in the USA.
