Mexico's Insane Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary

Visiting the Monarch butterfly reserve was the most amazing experience in Mexico we've had PERIOD! We had come across magical photos with millions of butterflies but just couldn't believe we'd see this many... well needless to say we were WRONG! This was honestly the most magical and surreal experience we've ever had and if you are ever in Mexico City at the time of the migration you should check it out!
We visited the Sierra Chincua sanctuary, which is located a few kilometers uphill from the Pueblo Magico town Angangueo, the sanctuary sits at the heart of the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. We got there on our own but there are a lot of organized tours.
Here are the main things you need to know:
You can see them from November to March.
They settle in the Oyamel fir tree forests in Michoacán and in the forested mountains west of Mexico City.
The butterflies love the sun so if you want to see as many butterflies as possible make sure you go on a warm day with clear skies. The best time of the day is 11am- 2pm

The tress were probably the tallest trees we’ve seen! And so lucky it was a sunny and warm day and we got to see the butterflies 🦋❤️
