Josh, I think you should cover high-end gear for sure. 100% First of all, it's just fun/entertaining to see fancy gear. And you doing a review means that you can justify the time spent listening and analyzing high-end gear, and that experience just continues to add value to your perspective on all things - including more financially accessible stuff. EDIT: I would like to know a bit more of your audio chain in these videos though. e.g. are you using two or three different dacs or amps in your process? Any interesting insights with gear? :)

Love these high end videos even if I'll never hear one of these. Maybe I'll hit a canjam some day. I ordered the crinacles the other day along with an EarStudio MKS II and a bit excited. I'm not too big into IEMs but I've been having more fun with them as I get them to fit better but I'm more of a big boy sort of guy. In fact I'm building my own pair of Woodies Grados right now. but I ordered a build your own IEM kit also so I'm going to dabble.

Having been in this 'hobby' for some time now, I am not shocked as much by the TOT prices. Not Sure I'll ever want to spend 4k on a pair of Hps but never say never. Now, I am also not one for going after crazy amounts of detail as you also get tons of noise with it, immensely limiting my sources and I far prefer melody to audio. Excellent work as usual, Josh! I must remember to drop a line here more often since not only it benefits the algorithms and all that, but also because I too enjoy some compliments my way, so way keep mine all for myself :D

Oh wow I love that these come with alcantara pads, I had to get velour pads for both my sundaras and my m40xs and, of course, it changes the sound, but it’s sooo much more comfortable for me. It really should be standard for headphones to come with a cloth-like (or even suede) pads and the leather/faux leather ones.

The Empyreans are still wonderful. I upgraded and have both currently and although the Elite's Trump them in all areas I still quite like that bass bloat sometimes. It might not be technical but it's enjoyable, especially with R&B and other bass heavy music. The Elite's can definitely rock as well just in a more sophisticated way. The bass is more defined and faster but it's still nice and meaty.

(I have Susvara, heard Elite, not LCD-5) I'd say Elite+LCD-5 will be a combo with broader coverage. Elite being touch warm, LCD-5 touch brighter in the mids, Susvara is just neutral between them, and technically too most likely.

Hey Josh, I was hoping you could go into the difference between having a fully balanced cable vs using a 1/4” to balanced adapter when you are using a balanced Dac/Amp set-up? I am asking because I would love to use a tube amp (which the majority in my price range come SE) with my solid state balanced amp as the pre-amp. Or would it make sense to have balanced cables with a 1/4” adapter? Thanks.
@Martijn1234
@Martijn1234 2 жыл бұрын
Typically Balanced XLR will have more power than the single ended connection (1/4"). Whether it sounds better I cannot really say for sure but I always go balanced if it's available because some swear by it. It's worth noting that because it will typically be louder this can also be viewed as sounding "better" to the ears when really it is just louder :) I also love the tubes and as you say not that many tube amps are balanced but there are quite a few more nowadays. You do need to be careful when mixing Balanced with Single Ended. It can damage equipment. I believe it only works without any issues one way - i.e. when the output from the amp is Single Ended it is OK to get an adapter to convert that connection to a 4-pin XLR headphone cable. I used an adapter from Oidio sound in the UK (OIDIO MONGREL ADAPTER & INTERCONNECT CABLE) with my Feliks tube amp and it worked very well. Hope this helps.

Q&A: Do you _really_ need an amp to drive high end headphones, or will a dongle be enough? For instance, with the Diana V2, could you get away without an amp and just crank the volume? On a side note, I think it'd be interesting if you did a video breaking a guide for headphone impedance/sensitivity and how to pair that with amp impedance. I can give you my 2cents. I started w/ the HD58x $150, which I love btw. I spent about 6 months researching planar magnetics and decided on the Meze Empyreans. Most audiophiles only focus the sound even if they touch on build quality and comfort its NOT a priority to them, while it is to me as I've bought expensive headphones in the past years ago that sounded great but I could not wear for any more than an hour or two. While it is probably true the Empyreans are not the most resolving at their price point they are w/o a doubt the most comfortable and can be worn for hours w/o physical fatigue or perspiration. Getting back to the sound and to possibly answer your question "Are highend headphones even worth it?" Obviously that is subjective. One person put it to me like this, how much did you spend on your TV or your computer? $1500, 2000, 3000? Why is it okay to spend that kind of money on those items which will generally be outdated fairly quickly but not be okay w/ spending that kind of money on headphones which mind you can last many years to come if taken care of? However, one thing I have learned going from a 58x (which I still use and love) to the Empyreans and is often a trend w/ highend headphones is that the more expensive you go typically results in a more specific use case meaning they are generally not well rounded for a wide variety of genre's. So to better explain I can listen to just about genre on my 58x and for the most part sound really good BUT if I switch to the Empyreans there is a HUGE elevation in listening experience w/ SOME genre's while others fall behind so what I would call less well rounded. This is why you see many audiophiles carrying many headphones cuz as they switch genre's of music they will switch headphones/amps/dacs. In short their perspective is use the right tool for the right job. It's just the tool for the right job in this hobby can get very expensive, lol. Thats my 2cents, Im no audiophile and tbh I dont aim to be I find them to be like Karen's about gear which puts me off, lol. Josh on the other hand is cool AF and NOT a Karen.

@@heyguyslolGAMING This is a very good comment. From my point of view you get 95% of the sound you can get quite cheaply (HD650, Sundara, K 371) and similar to your comment the TOTL stuff is often quite specific so detail or low end resolution or this or that is superb at the cost of something else. I'm mainly interested in an all-rounder headphone since the sound (/genre) can vary within a song and I can't pause and change to another pair just for the drum solo. LCD-X 2021 I find is quite worth it if it's not a large investment, but beyond that I haven't found anything worth it to me. I tried most, but maybe the Susvara or LCD-5 will convince me to make the jump in price, but I doubt it. EQ does so much for free as well that I want to experiment with that on a high level next.

why do "high end" headphone reviews fall short? Many people want the totl tier and strive to save for something like that one day. they also can watch the used market for deals. I've seen LCD4s going for 1850 and Focal Utopia going for 2000. Not cheap but not 4000 like the msrp. Meze emps also go for 1750 along with focal stellias.

Are any of the high end headphones good for metal and rock cuz ive tried some if the 1k headphones and they sound worse for metal than some 200-300dollar ones
@Paul-py1oh

Everything depends on the genre of music you listen to. Metal is niche compared to most genres listened by audiophiles

tldr buy a pair of Clears/LCD as those compete with if not surpasses this headphone in most respects but price. When the justifier for these is their additional pads and build quality… look somewhere else for the prices these commend unless you already owned the flagships and just want something to relax with between listening to the flagships.

What are some cheap/budget alternatives to high end headphones?

Off the top of my head, open backs would be HiFiman Sundara, closed back would be AKG 371, IEM would probably be Moondrop Aria.

HD650/HD600 with EQ are great and Oscar already listed the rest of the best. These really will give you 95% of what's out there for a complete experience. Certain TOTL headphobes offer superior elements, but often with clear weaknesses as well. LCD-X 2021 that I got for €/$800 is the highest I've found reason to go for and everything below $/€4000 is in my budget.

Hyped for the Lcd 5 vid. Question: high end iem better than mid range headphone? In terms of sound quality only.
@hartyewh1
@hartyewh1 2 жыл бұрын
If you have no meaningful preference difference between the formas than I would say IEMs are way better for the money. For many they simply prefer one over the other regardless of sound. A Dusk spits on most headphones of any price point especially if neither are EQ'd. LCD-5 and Susvara might have a tonality and quality that compares to good IEMs.

Hi Josh, I've got a question regarding headphones and music genre. I'm currently using the B&O H6 second generation headphones and I usually listen to metal / metalcore, however I do listen to a variety of other genres as well (a guilty pleasure of mine is Barbra Streisand's Memory). My question is this, are there specific attributes to look for in a headphone when you primarily listen to a specific genre of music? Thanks

Q&A: what do you think of the Fazor LCD-2 that you can buy from Audeze right now? If either you or DMS could review that headphone and how it compares to LCD-2c and LCD-X for the price that would be great.

I spent an evening with them and I'd pay $1000 maximum and I would only enjoy them with EQ. I prefer LCD-X 2021 (with EQ) in almost every aspect, including build and design.

I have the Empyreans and I've had the chance to try out the Meze Elites. What's crazy to me is that after I EQ'd the Empyreans they sounded SO close to the Elites, I thought I was crazy A/B'ing and not hearing much of a difference. Using Oratory's settings on the Empyreans gives them more detail and opens up the soundstage. I'd really like to know what the difference is between them because the tuning actually made a world of difference for the Empyreans which made them sound eerily identical to the Elites.

@@mareknowakowski1692 I've tried them with different cables, with Meze's upgraded silver plated cables as well and they all sounded the same to me. Best cable was actually a balanced cable I bought for $20 from Aliexpress that worked well for the Empyreans.

Looking for closed-back headphones ( it’s a must) under 500€ for mostly rock, metal, rap/hip-hop music. Any recommendations people ? Thank you. Ps. Anyone tasted the new version of Shure SRH840A ?

That's a reallu tricky one. Many closed-backs have some notably issues and a meek K 371 is better than most at any price point. LCD-2 Closed-back is great and you might find it used for under 500. That would be the best in my opinion, but do consider the weight if you're sensitive for that. An EQ'd DT770/DT1770 is fine as well. Beyond the LCD-2 CB all I can recommend is the Liric that's already $2000.

For me the stock sound of these is pretty bad. The tonality is fucked in the low mids or somewhere there. With EQ they're pretty nice, but nowhere near the price point. The low-end still lacks articulation and remains boomy. A pleasant and easy kind of sound and with EQ more balanced than the Empyrean for sure, but so are most headphones. The build quality didn't impress me as much as I was expecting either. I'd take an EQ'd LCD-X over these with or without EQ when it comes to sound.

You literaly described the Sound of the good old HD650 . Meze is massive overpriced , also all totl headphones nowadays . I had the empyrean And a good amped hd 650 can give you that sink in the music feel at ripped price... If you want technicalities buy a used hd800 for 600-800 USD . IT is literaly better Than the nowaday 5k headphones at technicalities. Also no headphones can cover everything perfectly there are no flawless headphone.

It’s alway humorous listening to complaints about a 4000 dollar headphone. That they need a certain amp or dac or a certain kind of music to sound good.
@hartyewh1

Especially these that I listened to 20 seconds before turning on the EQ to make them decent. No amp or dac would fix the tonality issues, but that's not what everyone cares about anyway.

At $4000 what can be said! If you're going to charge your customer an insane of amount of money money then the said headphone should be tune to be pleasing to most genres. At $4000 you need to satisfy 99 % of the customers They should ban all Headphones above $2000!
