HAPPY 50TH ANNIVERSARY KENNY GAMBLE & LEON HUFF PHILADELPHIA INTERNATIONAL RECORDS (JANUARY 27, 2021)

My mother bought me this album back in the day when I was 14 or 15. It was the time when black music had a political and social message for unity during a time of social unrest. This message is lost with the current generation of black musicians who never experienced the GHETTOS. The unrest in the Ghetto even inspired Elvis Presley to sing a song called "in the Ghetto" .

Thank you for posting this. I was 9 years old when this record was released. There was a DJ in Philly name Georgia Woods who used to spin this back to back. My grandmother thought this was a great song, and a great motivator for community activism and participation.

There's a good deal of dissonance here. When Rawls goes into his narrative, you want footage that relates to the speaker's accounts. When the song proper begins, you want footage that relates to the residents' attempts to go where the "man downtown" didn't bother.

Man, this brings back good and bad memories. It breaks my heart that New Yorkers dont learn from our past.

There were 15 different versions on demo copies covering 15 other cities so it wasn't necessarily just New York. 😟
