Hey, great review. I bought a new MG3 Excite in 2020 for $17500 with 10 years warranty. At work I drive around a hundred cars a day and am happy that my car is better than a lot of these. I specifically purchased this car because it doesn’t have the stupid features of a lot of new cars these days. It uses a key to start and stop it (I can leave it set to accessory as long as I like), aircon is fast using a dial to change temp and fan speed (not through a menu on screen), it has reverse sensors standard (most Toyota’s don’t), it has a touch screen (CX5 doesn’t), it’s seats have side bolstering, it has a real spare wheel, etc,etc. But the most important thing is it doesn’t have AEB. When this “safety” feature kicks in when plastic bags get blown past or large birds fly close by, it really makes you think. If you are so dumb that you don’t know how to brake or drive within the lanes then you shouldn’t be driving a car. A computer being in control of these things means YOU DON’T have 100% control of the vehicle. This, in 50 years of driving experience and literally having driven over 100,000 cars makes the MG perfect for ME. Sure, it’s not perfect, it has little to no acceleration and at 6.9 l/100km it uses too much fuel (my old 2011 Corolla 4 speed auto could get 4.5 l/100km). But it is also the only car I have ever owned that has not needed anything other than it’s scheduled service in 3 1/2 years…
@waza9878 ай бұрын
Absolutely I think this is why my wife would love a car like this. She absolutely dreads getting a new car and having it constantly beeping at her for being near the edge of the lane or cars approaching while you have a blinker on etc. a lot of these advanced safety features are more dangerously distracting than just watching the road

My sister bought one a year ago. She has already clocked 40k kms and is happy with the car. At the time it made some sense as used car prices were so high and the MG3 itself was a couple thousand cheaper than it is now. But now, I reckon it is a harder choice with used car prices becoming more reasonable. My Mazda3 SP25 Astina even though it is 4 years older than our MG3 still feels like a noticeably nicer car in my opinion having lived with both at the same time and now can be had for almost similar money.
@therightcar Жыл бұрын
Thanks Lachlan. I hear you - it was even more compelling to buy the MG3 Excite with seven years warranty for $17,990 drive-away, there's no doubt about that!
@arad907 Жыл бұрын
I doubt you could find a 5 years old Mazda3 Astina for $18k. I wish you could, but deeply doubt it… Mazda3 used prices (at least what the owners are demanding) are ridiculously higher than what it should be. Don’t get me wrong, I love Mazda, but that engine is too old and thirsty with an average output.
@lachlanhennah1344 Жыл бұрын
You’re not wrong. Even me as the owner of the Astina think the resale value is over the top!
@arad907 Жыл бұрын
@@lachlanhennah1344 In my opinion the new Corolla hatch (since 2019) in used market with similar price has a higher value for the money, it’s hybrid(at least uses 4L/100km less), it has a touchscreen infotainment which works great with Apple carplay, and really reliable. I may be wrong but I strongly believe that the covid-19 really helped Mazda to sell cars (specially in north America) due to long waiting lists on other brands. Instead of being proud of the sales numbers, they have to change that old and thirsty engine as well as that ridiculous infotainment, before their window of opportunity gets close.

Nice review mate. We bought the MG3's bigger brother the MG ZS 2 years ago and it shares a lot of the gear with the MG3. I totally understand that some people maybe put off by the lack of the more modern driver safety aids but we survived without them for so long and it makes sure the driver is paying attention. The MGs are great value for money, yes you can get something much more impressive in the 2nd hand market but you also have to worry about the eventual maintenance bills that will start to add up and you've go to love that 7 year warranty that comes with the MG. Overall great cars for the price point. Once again great review.

I bought a 2019 Skoda Fabia recently from a dealer on road for $18.5k. It has done 50 kms but I think is a much better buy, drive & whilst runs of 95 Octane can do up to 900 km on one tank of fuel. The 1 litre 3 cyd turbo motor matched to the 7 speed dsg gearbox is the same as you find in VW polo and really keeps the car moving along nicely. There are much better options than MG3 in the used car market if you are looking for a small car.

@@therightcar Glad you agree. Actually I think it is relatively common sense. By the way Skoda are offering four years upfront servicing cost of 1300 dollars and extending the warranty from 5 years to 7 years. It is transferrable. So this gives this vehicle another 3 years warranty. There is a major service at 60 Kms which they usually charge around 600 dollars. If someone was buying a first car for their child & sending them off to uni it would be quite handy if they had no servicing costs for the next four years whilst on a student's budget.

Recently drove one as a rental in Brisbane. My partner loathed it. I was a little more forgiving. But driving it up to Mt Glorious or Mt Nebo really put the engine/transmission to the test. We're talking steep gradients here. The low torque meant constant gear changes. In auto mode it was terrible.(To be fair though, these climbs test most vehicles.) However, using the manual/tiptronic mode was far more pleasant and avoided many of the jolting screaming kick downs experienced of the auto mode. On the highways and on flatter roads, the manual mode made it fun to drive, and (almost) felt zippy. A discerning pause in the transmission from standstill to moving off on a hill didn't inspire confidence. I'd recommend using the handbrake. l didn't mind the steering and handling. The brakes seemed fine, even with rear drums. Seats felt comfortable. Lots of blind spots in the vehicle. Backing camera solves some of this. Bootlid always took several attempts to close. Definitely built to a price.

That fuel economy is atrocious. As much as people hate on CVTs, they certainly suit a car like this better than a 4-speed torque converter. My previous Mitsubishi Colt achieved far greater fuel economy.
@mindfreeze0838 Жыл бұрын
The fuel economy isnt great because they really pushed the limits of NA 1. 5l engine. Most NA engines with that displacement are giving you between 136 to 146nm of torgue not 150, thats in a 1.6l territory. For context those are near Swift Sport(pre 2018) numbers or Vitara(M16A).
@EnShinNoi Жыл бұрын
They didn't push shit. If they did, it would be quicker and have better fuel economy. Compare it to a Mazda2. Similar numbers but the Mazda can hit 100 km/h 2 seconds faster and has better fuel economy, partly because they had the smarts to include 6 gears.
@mindfreeze0838 Жыл бұрын

I did mainly order the MG3 for the cost factor and the fact I’m 188cm tall and even with the drivers seat right back I can fit my legs and body in the rear of the vehicle and still have head clearance( I don’t even manage that in my mums Hyundai Elantra sedan.) which I thought was pretty good! I’m stepping down from a ford territory awd so I’m nervous about the change in size but I keep telling myself it’s a smart practical economical car that I can afford to drive to work each day and now my daughter is out of child booster seat I don’t have that to worry about either. So thanks for your review. I’m concerned about the safety but how long can a car go in Australia before it has to have some sort of ANCAP rating?
@therightcar Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment mate, glad you found the review helpful. It is a well packaged car, that’s for sure. There are no rules about ANCAP having to test new cars or old cars. It’s a process that is usually worked through by both the safety authority and the car brand. But I’d strongly suggest that MG 3 is NEVER going to be put through ANCAP. It wasn’t very safe by Euro NCAP standards almost a decade ago, and while I’m sure it has been improved since then, I still reckon you could do better if safety is a concern. A demo Rio or Stonic would be better. Or a second hand Corolla or Yaris.

Essentially it's a Rover from about 20 years ago with lots of cool more (slightly) modern tweeks. There is definitely something to be said for how old school it is. 30,000kms in, capped low price servicing, just the sparks changed (oil & filter etc) purrs like a kitten. Rear brakes and new tyres by 50k. Easily sits 4 adults, people are always astounded when they sit in the back, super comfortable. Keep it in "S" (Sportsmode), always, kicks in the gear change better when you need it, and yes, you may need to go triptronic/manual occasionally, but rarely, but it's way fun. Economy is great, I'm on dirt, city, highway, everything. Just drive it as you need. You will always get the best park. Ridiculously fun, affordable and practical car. The SUV MG has the same engine but a turbo option, would be nice to sneak one of those in for some fun though 😃

I just recently bought my first car its a 2010 Subaru Impreza hatchback and I love it but the fuel consumption is just ridiculous, its only doing 360km max per full tank of 98 fuel and im only driving calmly not aggressively. I just listed it for sale as it costing me $100 per fill and only getting 360kms out of a full tank and I hardly drive it at the moment. I only want to spend around $15-17k and theres some good Mg3's out there with not many kms that fit my price range but im just not sure if they are reliable? What would I be able to get thats better than the mg3 for my price range? Also I've noticed a lot of mg3 cars for sale online with hardly any kms and only a few years old, it seems like people aren't keeping them for very long, do you know why this is? Thanks
@therightcar Жыл бұрын
Mate I wouldn’t be buying an MG3 new or slightly used. If you need a practical hatch, a Jazz would be good for about the same money. Or if you are really worried about ongoing fuel costs, what about a Prius C? Have you spoken to a mechanic about your fuel consumption in the Subie? It seems very high.
@levi.k4017 Жыл бұрын
@@therightcar Thanks for your replay, yes I’ve taken the car to 2 mechanics. One of which is a specialist Subaru mechanic called the Subie Doctor in Sydney. He did a minor service on the car as well as a few other things, he also took the car for a drive with a scanner on it and he said all data is within the normal specification. The 2nd mechanic also looked at the car and put it on a scanner and couldn’t find anything wrong with it but my cousin has a 2009 Impreza RS and his only uses 10L/100km so there must be something wrong with mine? I’m lost at this point and don’t know what to do? I love the car and want to get it fixed. Could I be a blocked fuel injector or a bad oxygen sensor that’s causing the issue? I’ve cleaned the MAF sensor and the throttle body but no luck. Thanks

So youre down on the car because it doesnt have Adas,, a feature mind you that most persons turn off because its annoying at best and frightening at worst when it brakes the car without warning because of a road undulation. It has 6 airbags, esc, a reverse camera with sensors to match so it has the most essential stuff covered, hell it has 3 top isofix points, so many cars, even some people movers dont get that. I am impressed at the tuning of the engine, thats the most powerful 1.5l na ive seen, but the fuel efficiency suffers a bit. Its a decent car for the price
@therightcar Жыл бұрын
Hang on. Most people don’t turn off ADAS. Most people turn off annoying lane keeping tech or speed sign warnings. Not the capability for the car to potentially stop you crashing into someone else’s car, or a cyclist, or a pedestrian. Secondly, it has three top-tether points, not three ISOFIX. It has TWO ISOFIX, and so does every people mover on the market (at least two, often more). As for power, a three-cyl Yaris has 88kW … more than this four-pot.
@mindfreeze0838 Жыл бұрын
@@therightcar you and I know a different set of most people. The persons I know have Adas off in all its forms as they find it annoying and/or unsafe. One such person has a previous gen Honda Accord, he had to dodge a. Maniac who decided his lane wasnt enough, he had to find refuge on the left most section of the lane. However as the car is low Honda sensing saw the curb wall as a oncoming vehicle and the Honda sensing stopped the car in its tracks, all while the aforementioned maniac was speeding towards him unable to move. Suffice to say he was properly terrified, luckily the maniac swerved out of his lane before the two vehicles got intimate with each other( I make light of this but this happened a year change ago and he has since regained his confidence so to speak). Since that incident he turned off Honda Sensing and has never turned it on again. Finally i meant 3 top points and two isofix(thought I was clear on that but I guess not) . Most just have the isofix on the outer seats but not the middle ones

Thank Matt - this is cheap for a reason or several - some Chinese car manufacturers are known for their inbuilt ‘factory rust’ (recent Sunshine Coast ute story) and this lacks safety features which I wouldn’t let my daughter expose herself to and heavy steering would be a deal-breaker - I’ll point her in the direction of small Japanese or South Korean makes or preferably a good low km non CVT Subaru Forester (ie. no later than 2012) with its standard safety features, high ANCAP rating and AWD or Toyota RAV4 as both will also give her future lifestyle flexibility.

@mindfreeze0838 Жыл бұрын
The two vehicles you mentioned as alternates are in completely different segments also there is nothing wrong with a Chineese car, crap customer service knows no geographical or racial borders. In the case you mentioned that was the root of the issue, it had nothing to do with the fact the car was Chineese. If youre really interested in the long term of a Chineese car then look at such reviews for Haval and Geely, those two brands have had a good deal of time outside of China with a good mass of vehicles sold outside the home market to get a good sense of what ownership has been like. The only Chineese cars that I have seen that would fall in the category of dodgy workmanship you have been alluding to are the ones made in partnership with Western Brands ex Ford and VW and the reason is because those brands interfered with the established manufacturing processes of those models because they wanted to give the assurance the cars were Chineese, despite the fact they were made in China or made in a Chineese owned factory in another country.
