MG runs for the first time in 30 years!

Upgraded the broken points distributor to an electronic ignition system. This solved the spark problem and allowed me to start the 1978 MGB for the first time in 30 years! Part 8. #MG #restoration #mgboss

I found a 78 MGB that had been abandoned in a friend's backyard for 29 years and I've done much the same except I am using all OEM parts and rebuilding original components as much as possible. She's now gotten her smog certificate, (gotta love California!) and is registered. Still working on her, but it sure is a lot of fun. Oh, I know NOTHING about cars, but these little gems are super easy.

Great video. In my collection I restored the following MGBs in the past 5 years. 68, 71, 79, 79 Limited Edition (All convertibles). I need to restore my daily driver 80 MGB after it was restored 30 years ago. I also just acquired a 68 MGC GT. LIke the other MGs in my collection it will also be a ground up restoration.

@@DrDExplainsStuff Outstanding work on your MGB and your videos. My Dad gave me my first car a 1967 British racing green MGB. Since that day I ve never looked back and have had one since high school. Now that I just retired I should more free time. I would like to do some youtube MGB and MGC how to video like you have done. Thank you for taking the time to reply.

dont forget a drop of oil on the felt pad under the rotor as it lubes the shaft underneath.

I switched over to the same pertronix system. Works great. Starts easier and runs so much better.

I wish I had an electronic ignition kit available back in the 60s for my ‘67 English Ford Cortina GT. Since that time I retrofitted Factory electronic ignition systems to two of my cars back in the day.

You'll love the Pertronix ignition. Never mess with the distributor sgain!

I put a pertronix on my 71 Dodge slant 6....drove it for years without adjustments. Good stuff.

Pertronix igniter is the way to go. The original OPUS system would fail after warming up on it's good days. Ask me how I know ;)

Toss the Stromberg in the trash. Put twin 1 3/4" SU HIFs on it with header and free flow exhaust 😉👍

What kind of ignition came out of it? I didn’t see any points or condenser? Have never seen one like that.

That was original for the year. It was an early attempt at electronic ignition. They weren't particularly robust, but I think by 80 they were using a GM version that was pretty good. There is some info on the web I am sure.
