Makes sense, this should be standard policy for all EV makers, MG wont't lose anything with A faulty battery pack, as most of it will be reusable for future battery packs or for stationary storage.

It's only sense where >90% batteries can met the goal. So the battery needs to support and average lifetime of 1.500.000 (50% over the threshold) with a certain levels of mistreatment (like frequent fast charging). Only last generation LFP (and maybe they are pushing too far) can met that goal.

@@diablosv36 I think you have misunderstand me. I don't referred to the drop of 90% of battery capacity but 90% of sold cars met the ending before reach the degradation required to execute the warranty. 90% goal it's the same that increase the battery cost a 10% so you can pay for the replacements under the warranty. Over 10% the risk is too high.

Hi Sam, Good to know about this! FYI, in Indonesia, the "lifetime warranty" battery benefit was started in late 2023 with the introduction of the Wuling Binguo EV (Bingo in China) for the 1st 1,000 buyers initially; the offer was then extended to more buyers & this "lifetime warranty" promotion was quickly followed by Neta & MG as well, with nearly identical terms & conditions as Wuling's. Some of the terms & conditions included a cap of 30,000 km driven annually, a requirement to service the car at authorized dealerships within the specified intervals diligently, a requirement to only use authorized spare parts & validity only to the original owner (lifetime warranty not transferable if car is sold), among a list of other terms & conditions (less than 10 I think at the time). I thought that the terms & conditions were quite reasonable for owners who plan to keep the car long-term for regular daily in-town commute. I agree with you that globally, MG will likely have different terms & conditions for the lifetime warranty as laws, regulations & market goals/pressures are different for each country. Cheers...

A single data point is not a trend. While I agree batteries last longer than most people realize, lasting for 430,000+ miles is not a realistic expectation when you look at the last 10 years for overall data. The problem is the older battery data is skewed by Nissan Leaf batteries, which were not actively thermally managed, whereas everyone else learned from that experience.

From Scotland - just bought another MG - MG4 LR. Depreciation will go to nothing when the market realises the implications. Having owned Mercedes for years, I bought an MG on a special deal just for Scotland and saved £9k. After 4 years I gave the car to my son and bought the 4. Fabulous cars - far better than Mercedes, which cost a fortune in fuel and repairs.

A modern car should last about 20 years to depreciate on a par with ICE vehicles. And it's not just a battery - rust protection and overall suspension longevity are also critical long term. For EV's, on top of that, battery replacement costs should not exceed USD 3-4K or lifetime transferrable warranty should be provided. Also, highway range should be at least 300 miles. Then, we will get the boom in that industry.

@@hawklutz - Battery warranties transfer with the car today already, this announcement shouldn't impact that ability. Rather, it's an explicit government requirement in some countries. What MG are doing is very much designed to make EV's more attractive to 2nd hand users than ICE cars, mitigating one of the depreciation drivers for Battery EVs. As Battery EVs are proving to be reliable many years on, the likelihood is that they will hold more value than their ICE counterparts. This will particularly become so when EV Passports are introduced that provides 2nd hand buyers with detailed information on a cars battery status.

I'm intrigued by this and the potential integration with home solar. For example, I have an off-grid system with 9k panels and a 4x4kwh (16kWh) BYD battery. Living in NZ I don't always have enough sunlight over winter so an auto-start generator is used to charge the batteries when needed. I also have an MG4 charged from home when excess power is available, or in town when excess isn't available. If the batteries have a lifetime warranty then filling up in town and then using the V2L to charge the batteries would be around 1/2 the price of running a petrol generator and have no mechanical downside costs. Thoughts?

If this is true about the lifetime warranty being retrospective to us relatively early adopters, then in one sense that's great. Warm fuzzy feelings all round. As far as I know, this warranty condition applies only to cars registered in the name of an individual (a person). If registered (or were registered) in the name of a company or organization (edit: I think leasing company is an exception if the buyer is actually buy with installments from it), or used for commercial purposes (such as a taxi, a car for hire, a car for rent) will NOT receive this warranty. In the case of registration change (owner change), it must only be change from one person to another person.

The warranty is transferrable, the announcement states so _"The aforementioned private-vehicle warranty involves unlimited mileage coverage that is not limited to the first owner only - applicable to the change of owners in the future."_ I believe the warranty would be transferrable if extended worldwide as well, otherwise MG will get into trouble in some countries as it would be degrading the existing warranty, and also not meet EV sales requirement s of some countries that mandate at least an 8 year warranty. So if MG intends to roll out this warranty globally it will likely have to be transferrable as well.

In Australia the current MG4 battery warranty is 7 years unlimited km. For me that's around 140,000 km for my 64 kWh NMC battery. If they upgrade to lifetime that should increase the resale value but at 73 my lifetime may only be 10 years or less so it doesn't bother me much. What it does demonstrate is SAIC's confidence in its relationship with battery manufacturer CATL. CATL have recently announced 1 to 1.5 million km warranties on truck & bus batteries in China so extending this to SAICs MG brand of passenger vehicles is a bold move I think designed to cement and even extend their position as the worlds largest and best battery manufacturer. Bring it on. Other brands will follow suit fairly rapidly if they want to maintain market share.

I'm a Tesla Model 3 LR owner and I put an average of 37,000 KM / year on it. My loan was originally 5YRS and I usually replace the car every 5YRS. At this rate, I'll be at 185,000 KM after 5YRS and be very close to the end of my battery warranty (8 YRS / 192,000 KM). I can only imagine the low-ball trade-in value Tesla would offer me for the car at that point. If Tesla would increase their battery warranty to 12 YRS / 500,000 KM, I think far more people would buy and would be less worried about keeping the car longer. It would also help their vehicles retain a higher value. I really hope he's right that maybe other manufactures will increase their battery warranty.

I guess 2 things. 1. MG have done their sums knowing that an ICE engine bears a lot of warranty consideration, is no more. and are confident extended battery warranty is viable marketing pitch. 2. I'd say they will have revised this this policy long before 10 years is up and those that have bought with lifetime battery warranty will have it grandfathered in. This will likely only last until there is a critical mass of EV share of market then things will normalize. Bit like the days when there were concerns with burn in on Plasma and OLED TVs manufacturers would have 5 year and 3 year warranties. Most these days have 1 year for OLED since people have generally accepted that they will last if not abused.

For now it's only for Thailand , they will likely expand to other countries. In my opinion a lifetime is what they would deem fair and reasonable for a motor vehicle, typically 10 years. In my opinion the best way to deal with this battery issue is to bring down cost of replacement or repair, organize and train as many authorized battery replacement/repair centers as they can and freely supply factory diagnostic software to help with diagnostics. Unless this is done people will balk at buying a an older EV say over 8 years old, they will be scrap value just like an old laptop or phone.

As most EV’s (in the UK at least) are purchased on typically a 3 year finance deal, when the customer will the trade it in and refinance their next car for 3 years, I don’t think a ‘lifetime’ (whatever that means) warranty on the battery will make much difference to those buying new cars. However, where it might help is in the secondhand car market, where folk will have more confidence on buying a 3 year or older car if they don’t have to worry about the cost of a potential replacement battery. This in turn should help residual values, which in turn should help new car purchasers because their residuals at trade in should be better & therefore their monthly payments should end up being less.

You have to service your car with their service centre, you basically cannot touch the car except for carefully drive the car, otherwise your warranty is void . Even minor modification or change coolent fluids or Paint jobs. You cannot even have your car checked by a third party. For MG the warrant covers battery, electic motor and the BMS. if the battery self combust, MG will replace the car of "same" value. Ask yourself how useful is that? Then ask yourself how hard it is to prove your car's battery self combusted after its already burnt, do you think the car manufactor will acknowledge that their car's battery self combusted? @@ricosun - to be honest that's no different to any other car warranty conditions, the automakers want to ensure that the car is maintained to a known level for the warranty to be valid. In terms of mod's these are being voided by many measures - higher insurance, voided warranties etc. If it's a re-spray or vinyl wrap, most companies allow you to request a warranty cover extension as long as the job is performed professionally at a credited body shop. Why would an EV combust, would it be beacuse it was parked next to an ICE car than went up in flames (given their more likely to) - if so then that would be down to an insurance claim. Besides the EV probably reported the fault to the manufacture's system way before it combusted, which would give an evidence trail.

I know how these lifetime warranty works in China, my friend has a leapmotor EV and it come with a lifetime warranty. In practice the car has to be serviced by lets say MG throughout its lifetime, and any other service or mod has to be done by a MG "approved" supplier, which MG will add on an extra 20% on the price and its approved or they will do it "inhouse" even for Warping etc... Thats how they make more money from you car. They lock you into their service network. Also when it comes to service, they will always try to sell you something extra to keep your life time warranty. Lifetime warranty is useful for new EV players, with a new model, where quality is uncertain, then you absolutely want that extra cover. I don't think MG needs it. They are good cars.

Vinfast has already stopped selling in Thailand because it cannot compete with Chinese and German companies such as MG, BYD, X-PENG, NETA, BMW, Mercedes. In Thailand, there are many Japanese brands such as Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Nissan, which still have production bases and are popular.

Makes total sense, as EVs are consumer electronics, meaning future replacements of defective batteries will be far cheaper than now. Even without a lifetime warranty, the anti-ev warnings that "you'll have to replace your battery" scare no one who understands that in 10yrs you'l get a new battery that's 5x as good for 1/5 the price they are now.

Details of the offer and realisation of what your personal circumstances will determine if this is an important factor or not. Depends what "Lifetime Warranty" means. It must have limit / requirements. Because all lithium based batteries degrade over time - so if a battery is 50% capacity in 20 years is that a fail or a pass? What about down to 50% capacity in 1 year (but otherwise works fine)?
@GruffSillyGoat
@GruffSillyGoat 5 ай бұрын
It will probably be the same as currenty warranties, otherwise MG will get in trouble with not meeting pre-exiting agreements. Hence will likely have a battery capacity floor of 70% by a defined age, below which degredation will not be treated as a fault. However, if the battery develops a non-degredation fault, or the motor / BMS goes, then it will be covered by the warranty (which is also the case now, although often different warranty periods apply at the moment for different parts). That said, if a battery degrades quickly and not in line with age/miles driven/number of charges then it will likely be treated as a fault, as is the case now.

@@FabioCapela - the warranty will probably have a state of charge floor like they do currently, which tends to be 70%. So the warranty cannot be used to claim a replacement battery if it degrades below this charge, but if it develops a fault then yes the battery will still be under warranty (as now), it will just be replaced with a battery of a similar (or better) condition. That is state of charge is not a fault triggering the warranty condition, unless something exception occurs - such as it falling dramatically and not in line with mileage driven/charges performed.

The condition is that the user must bring the car in for a check-up as specified by MG, such as MG4 is 6 months or 10,000 kilometers, MAXUS9 is 12 months or 15,000 kilometers according to the conditions. It can exceed the specified distance by no more than 30 days or 1,000 kilometers. The battery pack of EV's is estimated to be 40 - 50% of the build price. If companies like MG show the courage of their convictions in reliability and longevity of their vehicles it would create a huge amount of confidence in yet to be converted IC drivers. If companies can replace and or repair batteries under warranty then it is a huge benefit to both customers and manufacturers. It would have a great impact on the trade-in/ resale market of EV's and accelerate the uptake of these vehicles.
@GruffSillyGoat

The percentage is more like 20 to 30% now, the 40 to 50% range was from a number of years back and battery cell prices have dropped 70% since then. The MG4 battery pack is priced at £5,600/€6,700/$7,300. The shift to LFP has lowered pricing and will likely continue to do so; NMC cells though are now only 25% more, down from the 50% premium of a couple of years ago. LMFP is being worked on that will lower prices even further by raising LFPs charge density, meaning smaller battery packs can be used on cars lowering curb weight and increasing efficiency resulting the same or higher range at a much more afforable price.

I have an MG 4 and have a 7 year warranty (IIRC). While it's kind of cool if are switching to a "lifetime" warranty I bet it is limited and filled with exceptions that mean they'll almost never have to come good on it on really old cars. They'll exempt normal battery degradation, they'll exempt wear & tear, they'll exempt damage, water ingress, they'll void the warranty for 3rd party repairs, they'll void if the car isn't serviced, they'll define what "lifetime" means in a way that means finite (e.g a car in serviceable condition). If it comes to it I bet dealers will concoct reasons to not honour the warranty. So yes it's nice I guess, but treat it with a grain of salt.

10% will not be the case, batteries degrade a bit in the first few years then very slowly after that, the standard expectation is 70% after 10 years/100,000s miles with nearly unoticable annual degredation after that point. So the battery may have a floor set in line with industry expectations, that said battery costs are now 20% of the vehicle price (based on a MG4) and still falling. So the future battery price may not be a material concern for the automaker and taken on a risk basis that a few will degrade unexpectedly and just need swapping out. Batteries are improving all the time, one example being CATL who have annoucned batteries with 1 million miles range and 85% charge at the point guarantee.

We have the data that a 70% range warranty has very little risk and the upside will be very good for the first automakers willing to do it. Not only that but by the time the cars need a new battery the replacement part will be a fraction of todays cost. They could also use warranty claims as an opportunity to sell the customer a new car or offer them an upgrade on the pack for a reasonable price.
