Today, James is testing out the all new MG ZS EV at the London press event. The ZS is now, in our opinion, the best value for money EV available to buy, coming in at £21495 for the excite variant and £23495 for the executive. Join us while we take to the streets of London to find out just how good MG's latest offering really is. Since filming we've been advised the ZS EV will benefit from an app from Q2 2020.

Amazing how they can pack all that in for the low price. The opening sunroof is a real plus for me. A real game changer EV. The competitors must be watching closely. Thanks for the early review. Be great to see it on the motorway, how it charges in the real world, etc.

To be fair to MG under SAIC, they’ve produced some cars with good driving dynamics that are let down by neutered design and clunky, old, inefficient ICE units. With a decent electric powertrain and the effort gone into interior/exterior improvements, they deserve greater success in the future. Good luck to them.

According to MG, all of their cars are designed in Britain by a British design team. The Longbridge studio has now closed but has been replaced by an 'advanced design' studio in London, although in terms of numbers it is much smaller. It remains to be seen whether the British input will be as great in the design of future MG models.

Competition Chinese style is exactly what the EV market needs to shake out the complacency that the traditional makers have in their offerings. Until they understand that it will not be business as usual as they transition from fossil to electric they will continue to put their investors at risk as the ground shifts beneath their feet. Interesting times as they say.

The sales price is a bit higher than indicated in the text below the video, as it is a special offer for the first 1000 who puts down a £500 deposit. The real UK price is from £24,995, when the £3500 government grant has been subtracted and 20 % VAT has been added. That would place the cheapest LEAF £3000 higher than the cheapest MG ZS EV or at the same level as the Exclusive version of the MG, so it might force Nissan to adjust its pricing to stay competitive.

When you get one for a proper test - would be good to know actual range doing 70mph. Also how fast it can charge on likes of Ionity or Alpha power chargers which go past 50KW speeds. And if you go through a roundabout at 35 does the passenger fall out the window like in all other SUVs or the low centre of gravity actually helps. Good video. The fact it’s an SUV... ugh. But the wife doesn’t mind so might get one for her when the time is right

The official sales page in the UK, found at mg.co.uk/mg-zs-electric/, seems to indicate that the limit is 50 kW. There were however a rumor on InsideEVs based on a tweet where someone claimed to have spotted a test driver charge the car with up to 85 kW, that seems to have given the correct WLTP range to the interested tweeter, see insideevs.com/news/358449/mg-zs-ev-seen-dc-fast-charging/ We will see after deliveries start early September.

Really interesting car. I'm not a great fan of SUV's generally but that would not put me off entirely but the charge port in the nose does. I don't like their positioning which requires cars to be reversed out of tight spaces in busy car parks - often the case when charging on-route. Shame, but that alone puts me off one as much as it does the Leaf and Zoe (which are rather too small for my purposes anyway) The bonus is that this car is going to hammer the selling price of used Ioniqs. Who will want to buy a second-hand, lower range, car for more than the price of a new longer range one other than people who want sensibly placed charge ports (which I presume is not that many?)
@LeeOades

As someone with an i3 I wish the charging port was at the front as often it's hard to get the short cabled rapid chargers to reach.

Kenz300 x Although I agree with you, and electric cars are the way forward, as someone who drives over 30,000 miles a year, an electric car can’t replace my regular Petrol/Diesel cars. I’ve looked heavily into the new Jaguar I-Pace, but as I drive up and down the country for my job (and sometimes abroad) my diesel Volvo XC40 and petrol Audi S5 are the best cars for the job. Fuel cheaper for the time being because the Government haven't found a way of taxing it yet, if you were to take the Fuel Tax and VAT on off diesel and petrol vehicles the difference wouldn't be that great, the Government have been ripping motorist off for years and they will again when everyone's changed over to electric probably by being charged for mileage covered by computer, make the most of it because it won't last forever they won't give that sort of money up that easy.

I don't have direct experience of MGs or their reliability - but I have been driving a Nissan Leaf for the last 5-6 years... so I have a little knowledge of electric cars... bear in mind that electric cars have far fewer moving parts that can go wrong (something like 20% of the number of moving parts), so reliability issues (if there are any for MG), will probably be reduced. Servicing costs (for my Leaf, at least) have been minimal... Hope this helps :-)

Shame that glass roof isn't an option or included in the petrol versions. Seems to be available in other markets but not UK. Range is too low I think and would be a hassle so not interested in the current EV. I'd be looking for 250 or more miles because charging away from home looks like hassle and time consuming.

Nice car... but that's the issue... it's "just a car..." If it stops people buying an ICE, then it's doing its job, but its days are numbered. Cars that cannot integrate sophisticated computerisation, aim for FSD, and exceed 275 miles in range, will eventually (quite soon perhaps) become redundant. WIthin 10 years, most urban dwellers will not need to even own a car, as robotaxi services (Tesla or otherwise) reduce the cost of transport by a few orders of magnitude, rendering car ownership almost unnecessary. So... great that MG have made this, and at a price that's "reasonable" - but it is a rapidly depreciating and functionally redundant tool, that will have little or no future purpose or value.

Can't believe such a dumb comment on James and Kate channel :D Tesla has already lovely cars and charging network but can't you understand that less than 10% of UK full time working population can afford one? Even cheapest model 3 goes into luxury tax bracket. Luxury is not for everyone my friend so MG is the new king for now even if you don't like it. Nobody cares if it will have some small issues Nearly every EV has some but the savings are enormous compare to any ICE I driven back in the past

The boot at 448 litres (for both a petrol or electric variant) is actually bigger than the one in a Qashqai (413 litres). It is also cheaper than most Qashqai models for the first 1,000 buyers, especially when the specification is taken into account.

@@MarthaMansbridge , I drove a petrol MG ZS automatic in January (must have been a good month), and loved it. So much so that MG Motor UK are lending me one for a week to review at the end of the month! Having driven the EV at the press launch, I can attest to the fact that it is absolutely brilliant as well... The Qashqai is indeed aimed at a different market segment, but the ZS (both petrol and electric) is more practical and cheaper!
