Great video guys, it’s good to demonstrate how much car you can get for your money. My observation is that as the Leaf is £29k, you could fairly have compared it to the MG4 SE Long Range which is just £500 more. Then you’d be comparing a 39kWh battery car with a 64kWh battery car - that would have been a slam dunk win for the MG4 - 80 miles more real world range and 85kW higher charge speed
@lozkko

In theory, but you can get the Leaf for marginally less than the price of the MG4 these days (dealers are willing to drop £3000, or more, off the list price). Not so with the MG4!

I looked at both and went for the Nissan leaf. It’s a beautiful car to look at and drive. Amazing spec for the money and feels premium when compared to the MG. Rapid gate has never been an issue for me but there was a software update a few years back so that might be why. I’ve never had an issue finding a chademo charger but would have preferred it to have CCS. To be honest through I go to its max range only a handful of times a year. The MG looks ok but it felt cheap inside and out compared to the Leaf. I also hate the spoiler on the back of the MG which looks like it’s melted flat. I might consider the MG in a few years after I see how reliable they are but with the leaf tried and tested, cheaper, 8 year warranty on battery, much better spec and quality the decision was an easy one when choosing.

But this can mean that if you really fancy a Leaf, I believe it is possible to wangle decent discounts these days.....Although the Leaf has it's shortcomings, it is proven, reliable, and has 10+ years of development behind it. But yes, Nissan have fallen into the same trap as Toyota did with the Prius. They failed to fully build on the sales success, and evolve it into a full-blown EV. Nissan ought to have kept up with developing trends with the Leaf, and perhaps added a heat pump, or at least made it an option. However, Nissan are now fully occupied with the success of the new Ariya, so we're unlikely to see the Leaf improve or develop further.... If the Leaf fits your criteria, and you can get a healthy discount, it's still worth a look....

We have the Nissan Leaf 40kw and are currently awaiting for end of March delivery for our MG4 Trophy. Whilst the Nissan is a good car, the rapid gate and limited fast charging speed is a big low point. The Nissan is perfect for a city and local journeys. Anything further where you need to charge it twice on rapid charger then you need a lot of time to waste waiting for it to charge due to rapid gate. MG4 is a better car with more standard equipment and longer warranty. It’s a no brainer that MG4 is the winner. Nissan (and others) take note.

Not a mention about the two biggest deal-breakers for the Nissan LEAF - Chademo and lack of active battery thermal management. Unfortunately Chademo is dying a slow death outside of Japan, and CCS2 has emerged as the standard. Lack of thermal management also leads to much greater battery degradation and inability to fast charge after two or more legs. As a LEAF owner I would say never buy a new LEAF. However second hand ones are very good value. MG4 for me all the way!

However, Chademo charging port makes it a non-starter as a long range choice. Chedemo is very hard to find and usually there is only 1 port in any row of 10 CCS chargers. Summary. Short version to me the most important thin is that both car's take only 1-phase type-2 charging so the 62kWh Nissan Leaf takes almost 19h to fully charge. Mean while VW ID.3 would only take around 7h to fully charge. Some countries like Finland every house hold has 3-phase electrical grid while in other countries like England most households have 1-phase electrical grid. Learn which one you have and based your car on that in my opinion. Getting 3-phase charging means 1/3 charging time which is nice. Tough you will probably pay anywhere from 1k to 10k extra for that when including 11kWh home wall charger and installation

MG4 SE can be charged happily up to 100% every day due to LFP battery. So that USABLE 50.8 kWh of battery in the MG4 can be fully exploited, whereas you will want to only charge up to 80% of the Leaf's 39kWh NCM battery on a daily basis = big difference in real-world range. Surprised that wasn't mentioned.. as it's a biggee. Assuming 3.5 miles per kWh you will get 109 miles of range in the Leaf on a regular basis. In the MG4 SE, you will get 177 miles. Long journeys are possible on the MG4, but not as easy in the Leaf, particularly when you consider the parcity of Chademo chargers on some routes.

The elephant in the room not spoken about and critical is the fact the Nissan, even in 2023 doesn't have thermal management on it's drive battery. This omission has lead to premature degradation if either DC charging or in hot climates or double whammy if you fastcharge in Australia. The MG, like virtually every other EV has battery thermal management. Nissan's failure to include this is unconscionable considering the current Leaf was only released a couple of years ago.

Never use the rear wiper but need 3 head rest at the back. Prefer camera. There is a new trim called x-power which has more gadgets and sport suspension. Not sure if it will be available in the UK. Anyway this MG4 is in short list.

The leaf is great, it's just a shame it hit every single branch of the ugly tree. I find it horrible to look at. We have one in our house, and I've driven it a lot. How did MG manage to put together a compelling EV at the price of base Focus? Either MG is selling MG 4 at razer thin Profit margin or legacy autos aren't interested in making EVs cheaper
@benrgrogan
@benrgrogan Жыл бұрын
A bit of both I'd imagine, they described their profit margin as one they're 'comfortable with'. Presumably long term they're relying on the versatility of the platform to allow it to be used on a lot of other MG and Roewe Models, and generate some economy of scale. In the short term they're probably expecting the cars success will allow MG to pool their low CO2 averages with legacy brands for a nice payout. They did this previously with both VW and Ford.
@lozkko
@lozkko Жыл бұрын
I think established automakers are deliberately trying to keep EV prices high for a variety of reason 1) Make transition to EV slower/ more manageable, so ICEs don't become obsolete too fast 2) Maintain high profit margins, which are unusually high in the car sector after the pandemic 3) They are probably overestimating how much extra consumers are willing to pay for an EV based on past few years. What I mean is, if 1-2 years ago consumers were willing to pay an extra £8-9k for an equivalent EV, it doesn't follow that twice as many consumer (sales of EVs broadly double every 18 months or so) will do so when the price of electricity has increased by a factor of about three, and running costs are higher. So if you want to maintain EV growth, you need to slash prices, which is what Tesla understood and did. So I expect this year's sales to be almost entirely dominated by Tesla at top and MG at the bottom end... 4 ) Too much emphasis on increasing range with bigger battery pack and not enough on producing cheap EVs. I personally think that there would be more pent up demand from having a potential Corsa/208 with a smaller battery if it costs c.£20k i.e. broadly in line with ICE version, even if it has WLTP range of 200 miles or less. Rather than doing that they are trying to add further range to Corsa, as they will do with 23/24 model and selling it at list price of £30k. These are city cars!!!

It’s funny how no one even mentions the LEAF is built here in Britain - providing significant UK employment at an extremely “green” factory in Sunderland - whilst the MG4 is built in coal powered China (a country also about to become as much of an international pariah as Russia once it invades Taiwan) and then shipped halfway around the planet on fossil fuelled transport = not exactly an ethical nor a “green” purchase! 👎🏼 I love my LEAF e+ and won’t be buying a Chinese built car with a phoney badge - former British motoring icon or otherwise! ✋🏼

What about BMS? Is the battery in the latest Leaf better managed compared to the former editions, because heat management was nonexistent and state of health deteriorated faster. Don’t forget the MG4 base model has LFP battery, long term use guaranteed and 100% charging without putting the battery health at risk. RWD for an EV is btw always the winner.

(December 2022 MG4 was £26000 now £27000) 7 year warranty on MG4 but this does not included everything, seats I hear are 1 year warranty! Electric cars expensive to charge on the open road, home charging (cheap) is not available to every one (you need your own drive/charging point).EV Infastructure needs vast improvement. My next car will be nearly new petrol for around £20000!
