You know, the main reason why SR6.25 has it's 216 stars is because I was sick of seeing kaizo hacks having the highest star count of all the hacks... you know, the important reasons to make hacks.

SR3.5 has a nice dichotomy on its courses, the real levels are relaxed, cheery and breezy while the dream counterparts are frantic and degenerated. the concept behind the breeding grounds stage was also pretty good 5.5 is one of my faves, and a very strong contender for best Star Revenge imo, more challenging than the average SR yet shorter and full of secret hunting, a somewhat arcade experience. i really dig its creepy "lifeless" asthetic too its true that 6.25 has what i believe to be the highest star count in sm64 thus far, like 215, but a good chunk of stars are easy to grab, and along being able to stay on the course upon collection, you can just flawlessly blaze through each level's 8 stars, so i wouldnt consider it much longer than the average sm64 120 star hack. i still was a sucker for that its layers and layers of hubs and secret sections though, and the bowser fight was awesome. some course themes were pretty interesting too, but i found it a horrible sin that the golf course that was c1 was replace by a barren sea level, and the golf theme was instead translated into a minigolf fortress in c6. and the slides, oh man, imagine my shock when i found myself inmortalized in the billboards of one of the THREE slides

It's cool to see Star Revenge getting a little more love. I don't even blame you for not playing them all, they're some Kingdom Hearts level of bullshit. Also your older work is still so much fun to watch. Really love your recent stuff though, you've got that unique quality that makes just about anything you talk sound interesting. I think a lot of your best work has come from you branching out.

Pepperoni dickface Nah I kid. Out of the 3 shown here, 3.5 is probably my favorite. I just love the whole vacation aesthetic of the game, and some of the stages (like C4 and C5) are some of my favorites stages in the whole series. Also yes, 5.5 is weird.

Maybe Mario 64 is super easy for you because you've been playing it for your whole life. Maybe Nintendo also didn't decide to design super demanding stages because Mario 64's mechanics are fine-tuned enough for them. Maybe one of the testers encountered the inconsistent turning, occasionally jerky and difficult to predict momentum, and awkward to adjust jumps and told Nintendo, who responded by changing the game accordingly. Just food for thought.

tbh the inconsistency I keep hearing so much about is, from my perspective, people not yet fully understanding the way the game works. They think they're doing the same thing and getting different results but the reality is there's probably just a small nuance that they haven't quite figured out yet, kinda like how I feel playing a fighting game for the first time. I genuinely believe that even the people who don't have a handle on it could probably figure it out if they put the time into it. That being said, I get that not everyone finds it as intuitive that I do.

@@PhantomBane I've been playing the game for many years and while there is probably an actual input difference, the game is (probably) doing something wrong in teaching the player how it works. With something like turning, it could also have to do with inconsistencies in controllers or emulation not being up to snuff. I'm sure community emulators like Project 64 probably do a fantastic job emulating the N64's stubby, uncomfortable nub on, say, a 360 gamepad, but I can't imagine Nintendo putting that much work into their emulation of precise analog inputs. I'm not an expert, so maybe Nintendo is doing an immaculate job with this, but I am a human being with eyes, so I can tell that Nintendo doesn't really care about preservation. Who knew! I also don't want to completely rule out player error either. It is perfectly possible that I'm not playing the game correctly, but this does seem really common amongst many players. I really don't mean to say that this makes the game feel awful, or that there aren't reasonable work-arounds that players can find on their own. The controls and mechanics on offer are perfectly fit-to-purpose for most of what the original game throws at the player, and at it's worst it's a minor frustration. I bring it up to point out that rom hacks usually aren't made with this consideration in mind. I recognize that those who make rom hacks and most that play them have loved Mario 64 for a large portion of their life, and probably find some of these of quirks to be essential parts of the experience. It's just that I, the odd one out who thinks rom hacks are really cool, totally doesn't suck ass at video games, and hasn't played Super Mario 64 for 1000+ hours, finds it kinda frustrating when popular hacks that I try don't accommodate players like your's truly. I also recognize that some big players of Mario 64 love that, and find it disappointing when hacks are a bit too easy, which is something that you've expressed a few times, but I just felt like I should represent my side. Sorry for the ramble! I'm also typing in the shitty ass KZbin notification box, so I don't think I can separate paragraphs or anything else to help make this easier to digest.

@@PhantomBane I also don't mean to say that Mario 64 is some special case that warrants much further criticism on it's own than other games, because many of my favorite games have weird quirks like this too. The collision detection in Tempo is shit and the game does a poor job communicating this, the Light Dash in Sonic Adventure 2 doesn't communicate that the stick needs to be pointing towards the ring trail, sometimes Klonoa in the first game will slip and slide about because the game doesn't do a good job teaching the player about his traction and how to work around and with it, the auto lock-on in Devil May Cry and dmc2 can make it hard to hit a particular mother FUCKING switch, etc etc. I just felt that I should express this, that's all.
