Despite several reminders about applause, another example here.

Laing has matured since in the chair. She was a bit too shrill when she first was in the chair. I'd not encourage the house to say "hear hear" but all in all, she did a nice job here.

Have any of you ever seen the Canadian Parliament? No on can get a word in with all of the clapping after every sentence the Party Leaders exclaim. No - clapping should be discouraged whenever possible, except in very specific situations like the election of a new Speaker.

I agree. I’ve seen some Canadian parliamentary Question Periods and the clapping takes way too much time away from getting down to business.

Clapping and rounds of applause drown out speech much more than other voices. It’s a tradition with a reason. Cheer, shout aye, do whatever else but the not clapping rule is not for fun or for being awkward, it’s to stop rounds of applause getting in the way of speech (which is critical to business) from all corners of the house.

The rule is daft when they are allowed to bray like animals, but in the context the Speaker dealt with the issue with firm good humour, fair play.

You have to question if democracy is good when people like the SNP get in
@iainx20118 жыл бұрын
Keep clapping SNP. If others can clap for outgoing prime ministers and when the speaker gets his butt saved and war-monger ing speeches it MUST be right for you to clap a good speech from those who are actually interested in Scotland. Go for it!!! And as often as possible please!

Iain X it's only ever happened in parliamentary situations. If you are in parliament, you must behave in a parliamentary manner.

By the same "rule" that made "hooray - yah -yah" allowed, I ask that the English parliament be brought kicking and screaming into the 19th century and allow polite applause. Traditions like that are not set in stone - I think the SNP has every right to clap if it feels like clapping. [especially when they're the only ones in the chamber and only a sleepy cameraman is the other witness to their terrible crime] They should politely decline the speaker's next request by applauding her!

That would a British Parliament and yes traditions are set in stone as this is the 'MOTHER' of all modern democracy.

I would take our system over anything in europe or the united states any day, the house of lords although majorly flawed has one thing over any other grand house - it doesn't have politicians in it!!
