MHP2G/MHFU: Shen Gaoren HBG Guide

It seems like a lot of people are having trouble with Shen, so I've put this short guide together. There are text notes throughout and it's pretty self-explanatory. Honestly, it really is this simple.
You get Felyne Heroics by having felyne chefs that have Heroics as a whim skill. That means when you hire cats, look for ones that specialise in the ingredients you usually eat (like Meat and Veg, for example) and then see if they have Heroics as a skill.
I'm using the G rank one as an example, so for the Low rank one, use Ceanataur armour and Barrage Piercing (make sure you gem Pierce Up back in) and the Daora Delphinidae. For High rank, use the Naruga HBG and Ceanataur S armour.

@SephirothCrescent8 Glad the vids were of some help :) The Fort battle is very similar, though a Pierce Rapid Fire LBG might be easier as the movement speed is better and the rapid fire menas your ammo does more damage, just over a longer time. You'll want to save a chunk of ammo for the last zone too, since you can't kill Shen before that final area. Otherwise, Pierce through the shell is all you need to do :)

But isn't it better to use conserve Pierce 3 because it's kinda the only ammo that can reach the body when it's standing and use Pierce 2 when it's down low?

@NovaTheSilent Glad it helped :) You don't need Heroics, but without it you'll need a lot of extra ammo. If you can't get Heroics, an Adrenaline +2 and Bullet Limit set will work almost as well and the fight will be just as easy.

@drawbyyourselve No, Adrenaline +2 and Heroics don't stack, so if both are active, the game only gives you the Heroics boost. Glad the guide helped :)

12 minutes flat. I used the rarity 4 ceanataur armor (yes, the very first Cean set available) with the same HBG you did, along with Heroics. It was a pain getting my chef to give me the skill, but it was worth it.

@DreadCrawler: Yes, it will. A good Pierce bow like the Diablos series can complete the quest, but with their lower damage output you really will need Heroics or Adrenaline +2.

Just come by to say thanks,your guide finally enable me to kill this giant crab(First kill too,since I wasn't able to kill him before) A little question though, for the next hbg should I try to get Emperor Lao cannon or should I wait for the G rank Naruga/Lao one ? I still struggle with finding ruby because I can't kill this guy and it took so damn long to repel him.

@MrK2ification Heroics is a skill you get from your cats, so when you hire cats, look for ones that have stars in the foods you like to eat, and make sure one of their skills is 'Felyne Heroics'. Even with cats with that skill it can take a while to activate. To get Adrenaline +1 to +2, put Potential jewels in your armour slots, until Potential adds up to 15. You'll see on the skills page that it'll change to 'Adrenaline +2'.

@xhenan123 Reckless Abandon is a skill that boosts affinity, which is your chance to do a critical hit. Critical hits are +25% damage. Every level of Reckless Abandon adds 10% affinity.

@pillarofire Elder Shogun does have Pierce Up. With Pierce Up, Bullet Limit and Heroics you should be able to kill it with the High rank naruga gun, but it'll take a while.

for getting elder dragon bones would it be better to farm shen gao ren or chameleos. and also if you are taking requests, do you think you could make a chameleos guide or maybe at least give me a suggestion for what armour to use on the low rank and high rank ones?

@LuciferFlames Yup, you can get Barrage before your first Shen; you just need to clear all Arena training, of which the last two are usually Kirin and Gravios. As long as you've gone through and cleared trainings as you unlock them, it's not too bad. And you're welcome :)

@LuciferFlames That's right, you can only get it down to ~1000 HP before the final zone, so you'll want to save something like 60 Pierce 3. If you use the Ballista shots though (like you would on Lao) you can often kill it without needing that ammo though. And no hindrance at all :)

@dmsp3677 Yes, shooting the shell is better. The weak point is actually in the shell, it's the bulby part you can see when the Lao skull gets cracked.

@LuciferFlames Hey there. If you're doing the fortress Shen, you need to fight it in every zone, since if you wait till the last area you'll run out of time. You can't kill it till the last zone though (it'll have a minimum of 1000 HP or something before it gets there) so save some ammo for the last area too.

He meant that for the High Rank Gao, someone can use Naruga (Not G) HBG and Cean S, as they won't have access to Z and Shadow Cannon G-Rank version.

Hey there. I find Shen a real chore, so this was the very first recorded attempt - if you get lucky with staggers and can lock it down then it's certainly possible to be much faster as it sounds like you found.

@lNameInLightsl Breaking Kut ku ear for example is to use a hammer. Directly hit it in the head. Works with most monsters like Rathalos / Rathian.

Hi. So for the 9-star Nekoht quest--can I actually kill Shen Gaoren before he reaches the last area (with the fort. area 5, maybe?)? Or is this like the Lao Shan Lung, where it can't be killed until it reaches the final area?

The bulb thing on Gaoren's back is a bit big so it's easy to hit it even if you're off.

@monoblosfarmer Correct. Adrenaline +2 is a good substitute though if you can't get Heroics easily.

@mazereon well i made a new account and im trying to bowgun everything. i need the edb to make death stench. which do you think would be easier to kill with a bowgun, chameleos or shen? also im at 6* elder and after 4 horns, shen is the next urgent and i have chameleos unlocked. so what would be your suggestion? lmao sorry if its hard to understand. thanks for the help.

@LiteHeeto Since you can't hit the weak point in the shell with Normal shots, the Naruga HBG is actually superior here.

Any meal that cats with those skills specialise in; you might need to eat a few meals until both activate.

Z is the G-Rank (HR9) version of the armour counterpart to X in unite/2g

@pillarofire Well, the Naruga gun is relaly important to use on the G rank Shen. Armour is less important, and if you can't get Heroics then any Adrenaline +2 armour will be fine. Monoblos armour with Bullet Limit and Adr +2 will serve you fine. GL dude :)

I think using lava storm is pretty good too. rapid fire of peirce 3. its only 2 shots per bullet, but still makes a difference, especially with heroics. Right?

@N1k0zj : Easier to kill is definitely Shen, though Cham isn't too hard. If you get an Elemental Up set and a LBG with Fire S Rapid Fire, you'll be set to take on Cham, too.

@TheRUNTZILLA No, you can definitely do the quest fine without it. It does make everything much faster though, so I'd recommend at least grabbing an Adrenaline +2 set to make your life easier!

I'vve seen a set with Tzar lao cannon, and full Cenataur Z. The set is gemmed for AddPierce all lvls, reloading speed +3, defense -30 and PierceS up, could this work propely on shen gaoren? And, first of all, is this set possible?

Should work fine :) Having Adrenaline +2 armour might help too if you're getting stuck.

@@kael070 auto reload doesn't work well with Pierce/pellet shots it will make you cry the auto reload only works best for elemental shots and normal s shots.

I'm trying the same technique with the high rank shen gaoren (without heroics)... the problem is that I'm already out of all pierce 3 and 2 and halfway through the mats for pierce 1 and he's just started lumbering into area 2. I've made him flinch so many times that he took forever to clear area 1... Is the fortress area set up so that you can't kill a monster until it has reached the final area (I hear this is the case for lao shan)...if that's the case I guess I better save the rest of my ammo

@kreff06 Because with Speed Fire, the recoil on Pierce shots is huge. You'll do more damage faster reloading every 7 shots compared to the huge recoil on Speed Fired Pierce 3.

That meteor cannon should work fine, if you have Adrenaline +2. Otherwise, your damage output will be a little low. The Daora cannon with Load Up would be a better choice though.
