mazereon's Lao Shan Lung guide

This is a video guide designed to help players of all skill levels and HRs kill Lao Shan Lung solo. It's designed for every different Lao you will face.
For every Lao, the armour is always Diablos D, since it gives you Sharp Sword (you need to sharpen less often) and High Grade Wind Pres. This means that the wind Lao generates from walking around no longer pushes your huner around. You don't need to upgrade the defence at all, I'm using that armour for the G rank Lao in the video and killing it easily. You gem in Sharp Skill Inc into the armour.
Otherwise, the guide is self-explanatory. It tells you what items to use and what weapons to use for each Lao, and you can see at the end all three Laos dying with the recommended gear so you can see it does work.
Questions:
Q: Can I use different armour or weapons?
A: Sure, this is only one method to kill Lao, but it is very cheap and consistent. If you try different tactics, your results may vary, though.
Q: Why didn't you gun it?
A: It's expensive to buy all that Pierce ammo, and once you rage Lao it moves too fast for consistent accurate weak point hitting. It also takes a lot longer.

As a companion to the video, here are some timestamps and written tips: 1:08 Pre-Departure Checklist (includes supply items down below as well) 0:54 Supply Box (Barrels, Ballista, Ration, Whetstones) 1:22 gather 2 more ballista shots at the rack 2:00 Align barrels with Lao's head as shown. Use paintball when appropriate General Tips -Charge Superpound head if no access to Purple at the beginning of zones -Triple pound belly. If belly passes, don't bother with golf swing. -Sharpen whenever sharpness decreases below maximum color. -5:42 Farcaster at the end of zones to avoid running back and the tail. It hurts and you don't need to deal with that. -6:08 When entering new zone, make a farcaster again during the downtime. Sharpen again while you're at it. Pop a Might Seed as well if you have one. -Use barrels again on head in beginning of zones. -Superpound head in beginning of zones if below Purple as before. 6:45 don't get rekt Last Zone 7:06 aim here with ballista and wait until Lao gets in the area. You won't be able to see him, so look for your hits connecting once you fire. (Dragonator would be nice, but time spent waiting on top is damage wasted triple pounding, so get down there after you're finished with ballista) 8:08 Hind legs belly tip Note: Comment is Edited so that I did not have to write everything all at one time. As a side note, you can also gem in high speed gathering so you can carve all the 9 times before the time runs out. And if you're using a weapon with 2 slots, you can gem in both sharp skill inc AND high speed gathering! You need to kill Lao when he's a bit away from the fort, otherwise the head will clip inside the fort and you won't be able to carve it. Dragonator is also good for the low rank one (because you're probably using a low rank weapon). It deals 1k+ of his hp in dmg. The last hit of the triple pound does 80-110 dmg with Black Hammer (the one I used), so I did that when he gets up.

It's not weird. The higher the sharpness level, the higher the multiplier for the raw damage. If your weapon has green sharpness, your weapon's raw attack power will be multiplied with 1.125, while with blue sharpness it will be multiplied with 1.25

You don't need to worry about the -affinity, the blue sharpness balances that out relative to other hammers at that level.

3. right before the final area, to use time more efficiently, DO NOT pick up the ballista in the chest yet. Pick them up on the floor, shoot them at lao, and run back to the chest to get the rest. by the time you get back, lao should be 1/2 way to the fort. then you can shoot the rest of the ballista, and should be 20 seconds away from dragonator range

HI there. Any quest with a Black Diablos can get you a Black Diablos spine - it's an uncommon carve and normal reward. You can get them from Low Rank (so Village Elder or Low Guild) Black Diablos most quickly.

@burnoutboy777 mazeron also has a guide for naruge, in it he uses, a lao shan emperor cannon. basically spam fire shots on the face. If u can use the shinobi heaven armor, or anything with auto-reload, elem attack up, evade+1 (if u need, but most attacks are easy to dodge), evade dist up, or any combination of the above. Being most attacks are easy enough to dodge, elem attack up, or auto reload are preferable.

@steelshinobimaid Because of the way Affintiy, Sharpness and raw work together, the Naruga hammer is actually the highest damaging hammer in the game without Sharp +1 or RA+. That's right, it'll do more damage than the CO without armour skills.

I did exactly what you did (Minute the Farcasters since his tail hit me out of mine when I was trying to escape), and didn't kill him. However, it has made fighting Lao after four or five months of not playing a lot easier. Thank you very much.

@MoonlightXIII Heroics gunning it is pretty simple, but the key thing to remember is that you can't kill Lao before the final zone. In fact, it keeps 1000 HP until the last area, so be careful not to use up all your ammo before then. Where you shooting it? The weakpoint is the back saddle where you carve it.

@fatalis777 That Shen video I made has armour suggestions for every rank... basically, if you can't get Heroics easily use Monoblos armour for Adrenaline +2 and then any Pierce based gun like the Naruga series and you'll be fine.

@natalironaldo For Low Rank, Blango armour works well with Quake Res, to help you put out more damage without worry about tectonic issues. Striped Striker with Garuga armour is another good choice. For High rank, your favourite Naruga weapon and Cean S puts out huge damage, especially when gemmed for Grinder, Sharp +1 and AUL.

I killed the Elder Lao with 29 seconds left, after a grueling session of well-placed LS combos with the Centenarian Dagger and Garuga+Red Piercing(RA+3), and that was after several runs where he walked away. I'm looking forward to trying it out this way.

if you can upgrade that set to blos U jeweled for adrenaline +2 (it requires a weapon with 2 slots) and u'll be able to kill lao even faster :) nice video guide mazereon p.s. I love that you pointed out obvious facts that new players often do not know

awesome vid, im trying to farm heavenly scales, I was only repelling him b4. Im using akantor armor with ra3 and sharpness +1 along with juggernaught hammer. im killing him every time now using ur strategy. Still no heavenly scale tho. Great vid!!

Great job!! Although for equipment I use SSP with Diablos X. Skills are High Wind Res, Attack Up Large, and ESP. Weapon is Black Rain Lance.

@Jezzfezz Going for breaks reliably will take Adren +2 or Heroics and gunning, and Heroics takes a few restarts to get. I suppose an Adren +2/Pierce/Evade Inc set with the Naruga HBG would be fast and reliable. Though, each shoulder break adds only like 2% more change for a ruby, so it's not like it's going to hugely speed up the process.

You *can* knock him down, but his feet don't take much damage and he doesn't stay down long enough to make it worth while. Hitting the belly is the fastest way to kill it.

@natalironaldo You don't need to gem out the Def- skill. It ends up being something miniscule like a few % less defence, which isn't the difference between a one and two hit kill or anything.

Diablos U and g rank yian garuga armor can be substituted as well. You probably only said the rarity 4 stuff because it works for all ranks though. Nice guide though :D your felyne heroics with gunner technique on the shen gaoren also works very well with the aka bow spamming pierce on Lao's rear legs and back

Strangely, I don't recall seeing it on the weapon forging list prior to Onslaught . . . I'm not saying you're wrong, only that I hadn't found the parts yet. I definitely had Union Ore before I found Shogun Ceanataur HR materials. In fact, the first time I did use Anvil Hammer due to not having access to HR materials yet.

Somewhere it says Purple Sharpness is the only one which won't bounce on the head. I would use barrel bombs for breaking the head, anyway. Onslaught managed to kill the elder 6* one, though the 1minute before the mission ends didn't seem to give me enough time to get all my carves; AND the head dropped into the canyon wall. Time to move up and see if it's still possible or I need to improve to a better hammer.

I tried doing low rank granny quest with full kirin armor and black blade (as it's the only dragon attribute wep i have) and still haven't killed the damn thing. placed bombs down, staggered his head, attacked his belly, then carved his back and placed the anti-drag bomb, and repeat with bombs, staggering his head, and then attacking his belly till he reaches fortress. used ballista, but not the cannon. attacked his belly more. STILL DIDN'T KILL IT.

i find that if your using hammer or long sword go for the head break the horn and keep attacking him he flinches more also when you do he does less dmg to the fort when i do it he only does 5% dmg per head smash 10% per body ram

With the set in this vid, I'd say it's about equal. But if you know how to avoid the wind pres, then get Cean S with Sharp +1 and AUL, and your Naruga hammer will be amazingly effective.

@pokekinz1016 Firstly, damage doesn't carry over on Lao, so it resets if you don't kill it. Try the method in this video, since hammer will outdamage GS on Lao. Give it a crack with the same gear and I think you might be surprised :)

maze, i love this guide. Giving back, 3 things to make the fight a little shorter: 1. when hammering his belly, try to face the way he's going, in front of the belly. That way, lao's momentum can carry you forward a little, and you can roll just once to be in hammering range again. 2. use the anti-dragon bombs! (#3 coming later)

@monstersftw Dual Tigrex? Ceanataur S armour gives great skills and doesn't have -dragon res, so it'll work great. Juts pick whichever Naruga weapon you like best with Cean S and you should be fine.

Lao is weak to dragon, but it's the faster hitting classes that do more elemental damage. Hammers don't do much element, so a good raw hammer is better than a good dragon damage hammer here.

@YadiyThomas You'll probably have about five minutes left the first time, but as you get better with the tactics you'll cut that time down. I'm assuming you mean the High rank one, because using that hammer on the G rank one will be harder.

@Jezzfezz Well, those two guns are far less powerful than the Narga HBG, with lower raw and clip sizes. Are you shooting the right part, too (the back saddle, where you carve from)? And bombs certainly can't hurt, either. Are you getting the Ballista shots on him?

@TheLordRatatosk It can do a lot; it will often kill you in one hit unless you have good armour. The G rank one can OHKO you quite easily as a gunner :P

@drksrd Is Corpse Blades the final version of that DS? I'm not so good with the Unite names :P But either class will work fine; Duals just need you to be in Demon mode the whole time so you need to farm mega juices. It'll kill Lao, but it's a bit more expensive than just rocking up with a big hammer :)

@mazereon LOL, I was just farming claws+ to make Ceanataur S a few minutes ago (it's an awesome set)!!! But it is possible to reach AUL with this? I know you get Attack Up Small, but I'm not sure if we can gem for AUL (I'm considering that we are taking off the negative skill). Anyways, thanks one more time for the tips/videos! =D
