Almost 5 years later this still gives me goosebumps. My family and I had made the decision to punch 15,000 all star ballots (back when they were physical papers) to win seats for right behind home plate. We chose the last game of the year so we could end the season on a fun note. What an amazing game to pick.

You gotta give the team a lot of credit to. They played some kickass defense.

Only way it happens, you look at every no hitter/perfect game and it really is a team effort, no matter how well the pitcher throws that day

Don’t recall seeing a no hitter where a guy got hit that hard. Psychic defense.

The fact that he accomplished this on the last day of the season with a Triple-A caliber defense behind him (late in the game) was remarkable.

So I’d like to clarify a few things here about this game. As special and awesome as it might seem, here’s a few things that made it even more so. 1. It was the last game of the damn season. The Nats had clinched the division waaay before this. It also cemented their win total to 30 games above .500. 2. First No-Hitter in Nats history. Nobody can take that from JZ. 3. Souza didn’t come in “for defense”. If you pay attention, you’ll notice a lot of random dudes at EVERY position. That’s because it was the last game of the year and they were giving the starters little curtain calls throughout the game. They would pull them at the beginning or even during the inning, and the home crowd could stand and cheer for the fucking guys that led them to the playoffs. Souza was a replacement for Ryan Zimmerman (playing left field because 2014 was an odd year for him). While Zim probably wouldn’t have made that play, Souza was not put in “for defense”. 4. This game was so improbable it’s stupid. JZ didn’t give a fuck. He made one mistake, and a bench guy corrected it. Everything was stacked against him, and he threw a fucking no-hitter and in the grand scheme of things it didn’t even MATTER! 5. When people talk about the (albeit short) history of the Nats, and what might be the greatest moment ever for the team, that catch is always in the top 3, and often #1. I know I can ramble, but this game was unique in so many ways and truly special to witness.

Ain't #1 anymore haha. Still as a fan of baseball it's one of the most haywire situations and plays I've ever seen and I love it. Like the Jim Edmonds catch or the Josh Hamilton's round 1 in the 2008 home run derby. You just know u witnessed something special with like 0 effect on the way a season or baseball history goes. The one you just kind of start laughing at because you can't believe that just happened.

And just for more context. This no-hitter, as great as it was, is inextricably linked with what happened just a week later in Game 2 of the NLDS against the Giants. I was at the no-hitter in DC with my father, and we were watching Game 2 on TV, in utter disbelief as Matt Williams pulled Zimmermann after 8-2/3rds innings, giving up only 3 hits, leading 1-0. Storen blows the save, and it ends in the 18 inning loss. Zimmermann deserved the chance to finish it, even if he couldn't hold on to it. Never looked at Williams the same after that.

+Reversion to the mean true. But now we have some momentum with fulmer going 7-1 and a couple guys were perfect till about the 4th or 5th inning. It's just our bullpen that needs some fixing.
