Just as a heads up, a garment can legally be labeled "hand knitted" as long as a person operated the knitting machine, not a computer operated it. It doesn't necessarily mean someone made it with two needles by hand. Crochet on the other hand is ALWAYS handmade by a person with a hook. It's not possible for a machine to crochet, just because of the structure of the stitches. Edited to add: for clarification, a machine might be able to do a basic crochet chain, but nothing more than that; it couldn't do a single, double, half double etc. stitch off the foundation chain.

I was gonna say this! The price i think is an indicative of it, i saw small artists/knitters that said that pricing their creations/garments is a struggle, people asume that handknitting is easy because other brands will put "handknit" on their labels and price it very low, but in fact a lot of machinery were used in the process.

As a rule of thumb, it's very safe to assume that brands that don't discuss sustainability don't care about it. This doesn't mean that brands that do have a section on sustainability on their website are actually sustainable - greenwashing is a real passion for people who want to sell shit -, but any brand that makes an effort to be sustainable WILL advertise it.
@thinkingbout Жыл бұрын
Yes, especially since being sustainable costs brands a lot of time, effort and money, they wouldn't spent otherwise. Getting it certified by specific sustainability labels also adds to the costs so those brands will be transparent about all the things they do!
@kellbear2311 ай бұрын
not necessarily. this is a Chinese brand, and the focus on talking about sustainability is really more of a western thing. it doesn't mean the products aren't ethical or sustainable
@catIing11 ай бұрын
@@kellbear23 The way items are made now, they're inherently unsustainable. Making anything sustainably requires a deliberate choice and a new process. Chinese or not, a brand would have to choose to do that, and no brand would go out of its way to do anything and not talk about it. Also, this is a Chinese brand that sells worldwide so I don't believe that they wouldn't try to appeal to western customers on their website that's in English.
@justme-qd6qb5 ай бұрын
@@kellbear23no matter if there's a focus in china on sustainability/ethics or not, they're advertising and selling a lot to the international market. I bet you that they would take any opportunity (like any other brand) to potentially make more sales. And I'm sure they have a marketing/pr team (or at least a person) that know about these kind of trends. Especially since they're regularly collaborating with influencers that also talk about it. The labour conditions are probably not the worst (because it's quite hard to have good quality control if you're rushing people for maximum productivity) but they're probably also not that great either

As others have said, hand made doesn't mean slow fashion anymore. The only craft you cannot emulate on a machine is crochet, so if the piece is created with crochet elements then those will be traditionally hooked. Another big give away that the company is fast fashion and/or unethical in their garment factories is the cuts and sizing options. Happy to elaborate further if anyone is interested but the basic point is pattern cutting, drafting and grading are all highly specific and costly crafts that equate to a full size range and styles. Pants/trousers are normally missing from these brands as they require a lot of additional tailoring skill, they are omitted in favour of the "tubes and knit" school of fashion. This is easy to make, fast to stitch and most people will fit the products (hence all tops are cropped avoiding tummies and hips and most skirts are a line/fit n flare) From an old seamstress, designer and textile artist.

This is a fairly known mid-range Chinese boutique brand started in 2016 that also sells on the Chinese platform Taobao, where the prices are also about half of that on the international website. They have more presence on chinese platforms instead. It most likely does not focus on ethical issues. That said it is one of the better quality chinese labels, seems to be their own designs, so doesn't necessarily mean its unethical. Which should also explain the smaller sizing and shorter sleeve lengths (more for asian bodies). No mention of handmade knits on the Chinese site too.

A good indicator of whether the clothing is sustainable is to check if the fabrics used are synthetic like polyester. These fabrics can be made to feel really nice and high end but are actually cheap and really unsustainable. Not always an indicator for ethicality but my rule of thumb is that brands that use too many of these low quality and low cost fabrics are more likely to be operating unethically
@cindy-tron9 ай бұрын
YES!! "soft" is not a good indicator of quality. It may feel nice at first but it won't keep you warm if it's a sweater because cheap polyester just doesn't. It'll pill, rip and sag and generally will not last.

One thing I’ve learned in my decade of buying exclusively secondhand or ethically: if a company pays their employees well and puts effort into sustainability, they make sure that information is easily accessible. There’s a high chance there will be a whole page of their website dedicated to it or a paragraph in the “about us” or “FAQs” sections. Any company that puts in that effort will be proud of it, and knows it’s a selling point/marketing tool, they wouldn’t make it difficult to find out if it were true. However if you can’t seem to find any information, you pretty much have to assume they’re going by “industry standards.”

I think a good rule of thumb to follow when trying to determine if a brand is ethical is if the brand is transparent. if they don't make any attempt to detail their ethical/sustainable practices, they probably aren't ethical/sustainable. like if a company is actually sustainable and ethical, they will tell you everything you wanna know about their production process without you even asking lol. there are some certifications that companies can get that show they were deemed ethical and sustainable by a credible third party, but those cost money. so with small, new companies, just look for transparency ❤

Not always , i used to work for a small sowing company in East Europe, we made things for brands in West Europe , but if you look us up before , you won't find much about it( mainly because the name we had , the company used for everything they made so it always will show up as their big section which had nothing to do with clothing). But we was by some people standards ethical company. We got decent pay , and we had good work environment. But for other people standards that may not be the case, because lets say the cost of one item to be made was calculated at 40Euro but once done and send to the brand , they put it on the store for 400 Euro , so someone will see that and say the company is not ethical . So no one can really say or judge a brand for being ethical or not based on some standards that are only acceptable for them.

Then there is also the proportion problem. When I order certain things I am often in between sizes and have to guess based on material, cut, etc. which one wold fit better. I love seller who include the models size/height which helps with figuring out proportions and reviews that have those sliders for people so there is also the info if a piece maybe runs bigger or smaller.

this is definitely an overseas most likely chinese company, but as someone not really on social media i’m happy you brought this brand to my attention!! i have SUCH a hard time finding clothes that fit me, especially skirts; i am super excited that their xs actually goes small enough!! that being said, they could still definitely benefit from expanding the sizing in the opposite direction as well, but this often happens with overseas brands that get brought over; for example, lots of k-beauty brands only have very fair skin options for foundations/powders/etc., since they originally were for only a few people, but when those brands become available and popular internationally, they should absolutely be expanding their range to include more options - same goes here!! hope to see they take some of your feedback in mind and become more size inclusive in the future :)

As a knitter who is currently knitting as I'm watching your video, I don't really mind when people mix up knit and crochet, especially if they don't knit or crochet themselves. There are also other fiber arts, like Tunisian crochet, that produce fabric that looks like it was knitted but was actually created using tools more similar to crochet. I'm just happy when people appreciate the work that is put into a garment, which you obviously do.
@GertrudisBaum Жыл бұрын
Agree! In my language, spanish, they're even the same word: "tejer". "Tejer al crochet" (means to crochet) and "tejer a dos agujas" (means to knit, or literally, to knit with two needles")

I think Lacemade is chinese, because its super popular in China as I see in Xiaohongshu app. It seems theres even physical stores, clients will meet up there, dress up and have tea parties. This would explain the micro sizing, since chinese brands won't boder make clothing for normal bodies, but for what the beauty standard expects your body to be. Super thin and small.
@rawa7arb Жыл бұрын
they’re over populated so food isn’t accessible in big amounts .. plus certain food is overpriced
@milkshake2659 Жыл бұрын
I would check your word choice. “Normal bodies” includes Asian women. Their bone structure is often smaller whereas African bodies are often are bigger and both are normal
@sakurakhadag Жыл бұрын
Asian bodies are normal too, our averages are just different than other body types. Just because a brand is using the sizing chart from their country doesn't make them bad or evil.
@dearrationals Жыл бұрын
@@sakurakhadagAs far as I know, they're not always considerate of the bigger people in their own country though.. also, if you're selling internationally, you have to cater to other body types.

Small bodies are normal, it's completely unnecessary to ask for inclusivity saying they don't make clothes for people above 54kg

LaceMade things are so cute and i love the pieces i DO own but they were such a hassle to return. They make you pay for it and it’s astronomical how much it costs to ship back to China. Make sure you read the size chart CAREFULLY as most items have no stretch and returns aren’t worth it. Btw Mia your hair and makeup look SO GOOD in this video. Love you! Thanks for another fun video❤

Mia with your little bag if you loop the string and tuck the top (where it goes on your shoulder) under the flap of the purse it will shorten the string without having to tie it, and you can pin it at the corner unseen if you'd like to keep it that way or if it gives you trouble when you open and shut it

"Fits everywhere but the bust" is something I feel everyone woman above a B cup is familiar with. Maybe I'm crazy but if you think of an A as a small, and a B is as a medium, when it comes to standard sizing, a large should be able to accommodate a C! But when it comes to dresses and anything button-front, that tends not to be the case. It's rough out there for average-size people, for some reason. I'm about to just start making my own clothes, since my measurements are apparently just too wacky and crazy for ready-to-wear brands to conceptualize. Edit: 5:32 A fine-knit dress of this size should definitely cost more than $150, that's a lot of labor and superior skill. I'd expect something like that to cost at least $300 handmade. I'm suspicious. We've also got DollsKill levels of size inconsistency, looks like. Bummer.
