You can't change directions when moving your pieces, also the game ends when all spaces are filled (the winner being the person with the most flat stones).
@SamTheWai7 жыл бұрын
Good review. Just a small correction: when you move a stack, you can only move in a single direction. In your example you went right then down.

geez, who cares? you don't have to learn teh rules from the video. it doesn't derail someone's opinion of the game. if i don't like it this way, i won't like it that way,
@johna61087 жыл бұрын
SamTheWai I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not considering they don't try doing a rules video.
@SamTheWai7 жыл бұрын
John A it's not sarcasm. I just pointed out a mistake in case viewers are trying to learn the rules would know about it.
@KissellMissile7 жыл бұрын
I think he was not referring to you. Pointing out a rules mistake is no problem. I think he was referring to the person who stated they should refilm based on an example (especially when Tom was obviously playing quickly just to give an example).
@gatorchomp96077 жыл бұрын
winnie666 this comment is far more annoying and pointless than his. What's the harm in pointing out a rule in the comments? It's not like his comment is plastered over the video and affects anyone trying to watch.

The game is actually mentioned quite often in the books over several chapters. More importantly though the profits from this game contribute to charity.

For what it's worth, I have found this to be a perfect game for taking to restaurants, to play while waiting for the server to take our orders and waiting for the food to arrive. Isn't a table hog. Nothing wants to roll away or blow away. The mechanisms are so new and different, it twists my brain and I want more of it!
@MrBernaar7 жыл бұрын
Did you play it right though? Because in the game overview you moved stacks in different directions which is incorrect. This changes game play significantly.

The game really isn't a game on a 3x3 board. It has been solved by a computer at that size. Also, starting at 5x5 the Capstone comes into play and it completely changes the game and adds real strategy to it. The game's strategies will change based on the size of the board, also. Additionally, the stack movement you demonstrated was incorrect - you can only move stacks in a single direction. That completely changes strategy and difficulty of the game. Just trying to help. You got the entire mechanic of unstacking stacks incorrect! You can ONLY move them in a STRAIGHT LINE while unstacking. I accidentally played it the way you did it onscreen once before and it ruined the game.

What book series was this featured in?
@davedujour17 жыл бұрын
The Kingkiller Chronicles by Pat Rothfuss. The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear are the two main books. Tak appears in The Wise Man's Fear.
@rjveit59027 жыл бұрын
There's importance to the shapes of the pieces. The white pieces are similar to the shape of the money he uses in the book.
@davedujour17 жыл бұрын
But the shape of the pieces have no importance to the game itself. There is a "travel" set sold on Worldbuilders (Pat Rothfuss' charity) that has only small squares of wood about the size of 2 Scrabble tiles glued together. Anything that can both lay flat and stand can be used to make a set. And any other sort of pawn, die, ring, almost anything, can be used for the capstone.
@MrPleers3 жыл бұрын
This is not even close to the way I imagined the game when I did read "The wise man's fear". I imagine something closer to Go or Othello. Also I imagined more squares on the board. This somehow reminds me of a fancy "Connect four" or "Tick-Tac-Toe".

there was more than a slight reference to tak in the books than just what you said. it is indeed pretty known if you read the books. ask anyone who has read the books and I bet you 90% of them would recognize the game by name, which zee's pronunciation is correct btw. I was super excited to see this was on kickstarter but I wouldn't pledge even though the kingkiller chronicles are my favorite books ever! I was literally waiting for you to review it, lol.

I seem to recall a Stephen King novel (the one in a deserted western town with an evil sheriff) where said sheriff just blurts out TAK every so often.... or am I wrong?
@MoriMemento1177 жыл бұрын
Zee was right about the box. If they were going for rustic with the pieces, the box itself doesn't give that vibe. It's like if Spyfall came in a dry monochrome box with no characters or locations on it. I think they style of the box is really important for shorter games as there is less in the game to get you invested (or convince others to play with you).

Almost... the rules state that a stack can only be moved in a straight line, so the explanation of the stack move is flawed :) Also, the explanation of 3 by 3 is totally off :D Noboby would make those moves, as there are multiple missed winning moves.

He really was. I will say, though, that this video doesn't explain the game very well. And they get several of the rules wrong. Greater Than Games, the publisher, put out a How To Play video that covers them well in about 2 minutes. I have one, too, but mine is much longer.

in the year of re-release of GIPF series + LYNGK, with Santorini beautifully upscaled by Roxley... I would gladly pass Tak, frankly - it's too expensive for it seems to be. let's see if it's still around in a couple of years - if this abstract is worth it, people would continue playing the game in 5, 10 and who knows - maybe in 1000 years from now :) as for today, I would rather suggest something from GIPF series for more intense experience or Santorini as a family game.
@JohnJeppson7 жыл бұрын
Denis Wolf the rules are free online with printable boards. pieces are easy to make our but for cheap. I made my pieces from a mosaic tile grid from Home Depot that had two colors of stone. also you can play online for free at playtak.com Give it a try. It is deceptively simple but the strategy scales up quickly.
@dearmrdw7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion, John. I understand that it's possible to make own copy - in fact just a few months ago one of my friends and I made a copy of the game we weren't able to buy because of delivery/availability issues while game looked (and in fact was) like something we could really enjoy. Check Tintas some time if you like abstracts and making own versions :) I don't always want to make my own copy of the game - the good example is Santorini here - would I spend my time making a copy? Nope, but I would gladly buy and play it. For now Tak doesn't look like something I would be happy to buy for myself or as a gift - in part because it's expensive and looks mundane, in part because there are proven abstracts released this year that are tested by time (GIPF&co) and look much, much better (Santorini and, frankly I like GIPF series design).
