Miami firefighters say there are 'multiple patients' after large apartment fire

i’m thankful i live in a 3 story building and the staircase is outside. so as long as i can get to my front door i won’t have to worry about getting trapped in a stairwell or something but yes it’s such a gamble, i watched a building in my old complex catch fire, because 1 person threw water on a grease fire they started in their kitchen. having to rely on other peoples responsibility and intelligence is def a big risk

That building was built in 1920 which means it was most likely constructed using Dade County Pine also known as Slash Pine. That would explain why they are having a tough time extinguishing it. I've seen a few of those apartment buildings go up in S. Florida. Once it gets burning, it is very hard to put out which is why it was banned around 1930.

Years ago when i was living in Portland, OR I came very close to renting an apt in a building that became a total loss from a major fire. I did rent an apt in a building right across the street though so when the fire occured i witnessed what would have been my apt.going up in flames. There needs to be a Law where constructions over a certain age & height are demolished, no matter how much is spent on renovations, alarms & sprinklers, egress measures lighting, enclosed stairwells & heat resistant doors etc - there are by nature a fire hazard due to design, materials, age and construction ... this property due to its wooden framing would be bone dry, unlikely has fire resistant partitions floor to ceiling & into loft, fire resistant measures inside floor & wall spaces...elderly and disabled people must be housed in single story dwellings in the event of a fire that can self evacuate or be easily accessible for fire fighters....sad day all round hope all get help to recover from this tragedy
