As a native, please remember that South Florida is extremely fun but to treat it with respect. There are ALWAYS trash cans and recycle bins near you, it’s not hard to walk 5 ft to throw out your trash. People still live here & call this place home & respect our oceans & streets(communities).

Great tips! I'm a South Beach native, and totally agree with especially the no driving. Tons of tourists get their cars towed and have to deal with that huge headache ruining their trips. If I could also add something I always tell friends and family who visit: Plan your day around the sun and the heat peak hours. Most people wake up, hang around a while, and then go out at the hottest time of the day, get sunburnt, feel exhausted, etc.. But it's best to wake up, go out and about in the morning to the beach or pool, sightseeing, etc.. then go back to hotel/airbnb in the middle of the day to check emails, nap,etc... and go out again in the evening when it's cooled off. : )

But as a New Englander who loves the sun & summer, it's tough to beat a New England summer. Granted, the trade-off is the New England winters, but that's why so many "snow birds" go to Florida/Miami in the winter, when it's not brutally hot/humid as it is during the summer. But Miami in the summer? No thanks.
@Jus2Trill07
@Jus2Trill07 Жыл бұрын
@@feiwong70 I get a rental car whenever I visit Miami. The parking is a bit of a pain and can get expensive with street parking and overnight parking if your hotel doesn't have free parking. But to me it's still worth it because I like to move around on my own accord. If I'm in south beach it's nothing to hop in the car and drive to Brickell or wynwood. If it's 3am and I want to run to the store or McDonald's I can do so with a car. Ultimately it's up to you and your budget. Street parking is like $8/hr from what I remember. Hotel valet can vary depending on where you're staying. So just decide if you want to spend the bread on parking or ubers/doordash. Hope this helps

Dont' overstate the case. It's always wise to be cautious when out on South Beach past 11pm. But it's not Afghanistan. Also, a great deal of the issues with crime are generated by tourists themselves, particularly on the major holiday weekends.

Rule #1 - If you're on a budget, leave South Beach to eat and party. Locals don't go to south beach because it is a tourist trap with crazy prices and out of towners that lack culture and the the ability to behave in public. Rule #2 - Pre-game! Drinks in Miami are $15+ for cocktails. You might find them cheaper at some places (not on the beach) but those places aren't a real reflection of miamis bubbling nightlife. Also, DON'T DO BOTTLE SERVICE. You will pay a 400-500% markup on a bottle that will cost you $30 in a liquor store Rule #3 - Peak nightlife doesnt begin until 12:00 and most venues don't close until 3-4AM. Even after that, we have after hours which begins from 9AM on. If you arrive at the time listed on the flyer out of fear you'll miss the headliner, you are three hours too early. Rule #4 - If you are attempting to party in South Beach, you may very well get denied entry for not being with enough women (if you're a male) or for not being pretty enough. Don't get mad at me for saying this, I did not make these rules... im just the messenger. This is yet another reason not to party at South Beach. Showing up with an abundance of women and few men is always an easy way to ensure entry. You can literally ask ppl off the street. As a male, the more women you come in with, the more chances you have of coming in without being charged a cover. Rule #5 - Don't use your turn signals to switch lanes. Many will complain about this but I'll share a little secret about Miami... people drive like assholes here. Unfortunately, putting your turn signal to switch lanes will only make the person in that lane speed up so you can't get in. You WILL NOT get a ticket for not using your turn signal. Driving doesn't suck in Miami, especially compared to places like New York & California. They always tell you to drive defensively, Id say you have to do a bit of both here. Rule #6 - You can turn right on red lights Rule #7 - No one will ever ticket you for jaywalking

You will get ticketed for not using your turn signal, at the very least when travelling along quieter streets, such as residential areas and school zones, or anywhere that a cop can easily single you out and pull you over. For people that try to educate me on how they need it since that's how they make a living and that I don't appreciate servers! I have news for you, I do. Two options, a) Make Restaurant owners pay them a living wage like they do in most countries. The price you see on the menu is the price you pay, that includes the tip already! You tip extra because they treaded you and you had an all around satisfying experience. Option b) Restaurant owners keep paying their servers a shiity $3 wage and servers rely on the tip. In that case, don't f... dare to include the 20% that you as the owner is to cheap to pay out of your own pocket! I only pay for a service rendered to me. If the service doesn't exist you will receive the appropriate tip, it is that simple. I have to work for a living as well. I tip well and I am respectful but there is no automatic entitlement!

@@mikezmac Part of travel is learning and following the local customs. If you go to a place and refuse to tip because there is no tipping back home, then you’re basically being a real jerk to the local server who did nothing to deserve it. Enough people act like that and the restaurants change policies and guess what? You get high prices and bad service in tourist areas with the compulsory service charge. Nice going. If you followed the custom in the first place, you’d see excellent service and would voluntarily pay the 20% tip because you were so happy with the experience. In the US being a server involves working for tips, so you get people who are trying very hard to earn that tip. You may say this is a terrible system but this is the system. I personally like it because it results in good service and I think it feels good to honor someone’s work with a tip.

Took our honeymoon in Florida, starting in Miami and heading to key west. Loved staying in the old hotel on ocean drive. Service was awful, they rushed us at every opportunity. The honeymoon destination was a toss up between Thailand and Florida. I really fancied the SCUBA dive sites of Thailand but also wanted to do a drive to Key West. The first morning in our hotel, we woke to the news of the tsunami that devastated Thailand beaches and many places around the Indian Ocean.

As a native Miamian, it is really sad that we are known for bad customer service, and yes Miami Beach is its own city with a city hall and their own police department and Miami is a separate city. There is a lot to see in Miami, don't go see the Miami Seaquarium it is a dump. When I was little it was already looking run down (25 years ago) and it hasn't been renovated ever.

Take it from a local, don't come from mid-August thru mid-October, but if you do, don't miss the Miami Spice price fixe menus at some of the best restaurants in the city. Don't bring a car to South Beach. Do everything that you can to NOT bring your car. Parking it will cost you a fortune. Don't eat on Ocean Drive. @@deebee4575 I love where I live in Miami Beach, but it's only because I don't live on the touristy east side if South Beach by the ocean. If you want the benefits of living in a tropical weather, walkable community, and you don't want the hassle that big impactful events/weeks/weekends bring, look on the west side of South Beach from 5th St. up to Sunset Harbor. You'll be in a very walkable and convenient area, while affording everything that the beach has to offer by foot, bike share, or free trolly ride.

Local here: day trips are definitely possible in Miami too! Fort Lauderdale is 45 min north (with traffic) and you can take the Tri-Rail or Brightline (when it starts running again in Fall ‘21), and it has a cool young feel different from Miami. The keys are 1-3 hours south depending on which you go to. South beach is also only a part of Miami Beach, like he said. North Beach, Lincoln Road and South of 5th are cool places if you want to avoid getting ripped off. Honorable mention: Wynwood! One of the most important and influential cultural areas of the city.

This was a good overview for a tourist! I lived (past tense) in Miami for 45 years. I moved to somewhere else to get a better quality of life. Don't get me wrong - the sites and sounds of Miami-Dade are beautiful and exciting. It is an international place. Unique - no other place in the world like it. If you have never visited - please try it out. South Beach is a tourist trap - the really beautiful Miami is over the causeway.

Good tips, I would add that the worst months to come are actually August and September. In July you can still get some nice beach days. Most hurricanes we have had in the past have come during these two months, as it is peak hurricane season and it rains the most. Also, definitely have a "cafecito", otherwise known as "Cuban crack" because it's addictive lol...and I wouldn't rent a car unless you're driving out of the city, otherwise take Uber or Lyft. Parking can be a headache, and you will get towed if you're not careful about where you're parking, especially in South Beach.

For all the early birds, don't forget to go to the White Haven for breakfast. They open at 7:30am while the rest on Ocean Drive open at 9:00am.
