That movie was the biggest dissatisfaction and disappointment ever. Colin Farrell was the wrong actor to play Sonny Crockett.

When people say the movie isn't like the television series they're not referring to the plot, what they're talking about is the aesthetic. There aren't the wonderful pastels in the movie. The show has humor and fun banter sprinkled through it, the movie is dour and oppressively dark. Yes, the movie does have cinematography very similar to the series, however what we're seeing isn't the cornucopia of colors that the show has. The plot was something I always applied when talking about the movie, it shows great tradecraft and is virtually identical to that of Smugglers Blues. That is the giant connection to the series. It does make you ask the originality question though (it would have been nice if they tinkered with the plot a bit so as not to be a carbon copy of the episode), but after over 100 episodes there's bound to be overlap, I'm just glad they took the best episode. In closing, the movie needed to have more brightness to it, also the characters needed to look better, Colin Farrell sans moustache would have been alright, but the other guy shouldn't have been allowed within 500 miles of this movie. Truly, there should have been a reworking of the great Jan Hammer theme.

Any real Miami Vice fan wouldve picked up on these direct comparison from the first viewing of the film. The only real fail with the film was its overal tone, coupled with its casting. The thing about Miami Vice the series is that it was only 'Dark' when it truly needed to be. Much of the series emotional tone was directly linked to Crockett, The show's score focused on who or whatever what highlighted at the time. So Crocketts theme was both stylized and cool. and if the character was angry so did the music and tone of the show reflect it. The movie on the other hand did not follow the characters mood, and was almost always dark. Which made the film gritty but with little to no 'happy excitement' , the movie kept the viewer in a state of foreboding and it made everyone in the film villianous, the "good-guys' came across as bad as the 'bad-guys' . now this actually could be more akin to realism, BUT! in terms of mirroring the show, which was a joy of 80's wonders, coupled with the glamour of drug crime, the film lacked. This couldve been remedied in script but almost certainly thru scoring and soundtrack, and partly by casting better. Farrell and Fox works well together but was both one dimensional emotional characters. neither brought a sense of light heartedness which existed with the original TV show cast.

Well summarized. Yes I love call the episode about Crockett I also like the fact that Edward James olmos was shown performing his martial art knowledge and his wife from the past I also thought it was nice when tubs got together with Pam Grier. As far as the movie goes Colin Farrell should stick to the Irish countryside and banshees movie which was really well done. However Collins character in the movie Miami vice is a toss-up between god-knows-what. Trying to sound American? I believe I detected him trying to sound like a southerner in the US on occasion! I thought Jamie Foxx did a good job of playing Tubbs. In my opinion I think for its time it was absolutely a classic and I think the music made it that way not just the theme song smuggler's blues episode xcetera. No DVR in 84. I was single at the time and went to clubs to dance be with friends n have a good time however Friday night I wanted to wait until 11 to watch Miami vice. Personally I wasn't impressed with Miami Beach. Before the hurricanes there were many more nicer beaches. PS all of the other characters on the TV series were likeable and I thought they did a great job as well

One reference I want to point out is in the 2006 movie when Gina is aiming the gun at the Neonazi she says "your finger won't even twitch" is a reference to the episode Glades (Season 1 Episode 10) where Crockett almost says the same thing to Billy Jo Higgins before shooting him "Maybe, you won't even twitch."

Good Analysis. YES, this film borrow's heavily from Smuggler's Blues, Prodigal Son. I really really enjoyed the movie version, but i can understand some people's mixed-negative feelings about the film. Some of the original cast claim they didn't like it much either. the film version of Miami Vice is 'realistic' 'dark' 'modern'. it's Miami Vice in a 'modern' realistic setting. The film that was teased in the first trailer for the film is the film I saw. I was happy. During the film Crockett and Tubbs were high-rollers driving Ferraris, Go-Fast Boats, Doing High-End Drug Deals, and Hanging out at Night Clubs with Hot Women but at the end they get their SWAT-like gear on and become the Police to save Trudy and bring down the bad guys. i loved it. it's meant to depict Miami as a hub through which drugs, crime, prostitution, and other things flow and I feel they portray what drug-running really looks like very well As much as I respect the series for what it was. The Series at times was very silly. Seasons 1-2 are the best, but after that, the show descended further into silliness. I mean how many different ways can you bust drug dealers? by season 4 -5 Miami Vice had become a parody of itself and needed to end. So there was no way the Miami Vice 'movie' adaptation was gonna borrow from the TV series too much. Jamie and Colin had great chemistry on screen as two alpha males that have a history with each other who respect each other who are cool. Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas had over 5 years and over 100 episodes to develop their chemistry

Smuggler's Blues had them deal with the main man at the seedy club, not his errand boy. The leak was revealed to be "Dolphins Fan", the movie never revealed the leak. Also, the standoff at the trailer was lifted from "Glades" when Crocket shot the dude before he could twitch. The ending is similar to "Bushido" where the hot chick gets taken to a safe house by the water with a boat waiting for her so she could disappear. Tubbs flew the plane himself so they didn't need a Glenn Frey pilot.

Honestly I really truly do not understand why people view this movie as some mega untouchable master class film. The original show arguably created the "80s" but this movie just used 2006 and it just doesn't capture anything all that worthwhile to me. The romance subplots felt rushed and uninteresting, and the shootouts aren't all that impressive. I did enjoy the use of lightning in certain scenes. But all in all, this movie didn't really leave a positive impression on me. The style fell through, the colors bored the life out of me, the plot is just rehashes of Miami Vice episodes. The beauty of the original was the bright colors and sounds contrasted with the dark gritty vibe of the seedy world of drugs and violence, the 2006 film is aesthetically dark and "gritty" but so is the plot's underlying themes and that just turns it into a generic cop movie for me. Sure the 80s original can be cheesy at times but it had hard hitting moments, style, and charm, loads of it. Yeah to a lot of people, the 80s are a huge joke about shoulder pads and parachute pants, but personally for me there's something beautiful about the decade of excess, drugs, sex, and violence wrapped in pastel and neon lights. Also final note, but personally the grunge rock cover of "In The Air Tonight" is infinitely more cheesy than the original and it made me cringe when it played in the movie, and it kept going on and it ruined the entire tense vibe of the pre-final shootout.

Thanks so much for your comments, DisketteDetective. I, personally, have never heard or read any reviews calling the 2006 film a "master class" film, but I certainly enjoy the film very much. Of course, the 2006 film did provoke a lot of discussion about the connection (or lack of, depending on the viewer) with the original series. Whenever this topic arises, I always like to point people to a quote Mann states near the end of his commentary: "The music is “In The Air Tonight” by a group called ‘Nonpoint’ and the use of this cue here, in a strange way, is emblematic on the whole idea of making “Miami Vice” as a feature film in the first place because…(the song) brings back, so strongly, the pilot (“Brother’s Keeper”). So, then you’re dealing with cultural memory of the show, as memory exists in the audience and the memory of the show in the minds of audience, is very different for different people. People remember the show differently. They liked different things about it. Some folks liked the pastels and the flamingos. Other folks liked the writing and the power of the stories in the first couple of years. Other folks may have been younger when they saw it. They may have been ten, eleven, twelve and they just kinda liked groovin’ on a style for five years. So the motion picture, I knew was going to be delivered into an audience that had a complex and divergent set of attitudes about it. So, the advantage of it, in a way, is that the brand name, “Miami Vice” is known. The disadvantage is that it means many different things to many different people." Anyway, thanks for watching. I always like discussing the show with hard core fans. Peace.

I remember liking Miami Vice 2006‘S visual look and casting but for me it left a lot to be desired in terms of drama, character dynamics and clarity of plot. I hope that we get a reboot of the entire series with a more modern overarching story style rather than a semi-episodic series. The pastels and coolness should return but with modern fitting suits and the music should be a mix of Synthwave and European melodic rock tracks.

My gripe with the movie is looonng dragged out scene with Sonny and his love interest, and the music selection while Crockett took her for a ride in the speed boat. Someimes I wonder if the movie would've been a little different if weren't for the hurricane season during filming it, Foxx had a big gripe with that.

Hi Andre! Thanks for the kind words and thank you for watching. It's amazing to see the varied reactions to the film. Here's a quote from Michael Mann on the director's commentary about people's reactions: “I was in a quandary about whether or not to use “In the Air Tonight” or a piece of score in this scene. That quandary was emblematic about the whole prospect of making “Miami Vice” as a motion picture. The music is “In the Air Tonight” by a group called Nonpoint and…if the music had never existed until 2006, it would’ve been obvious to go ahead and use it here because it’s a terrific piece and Nonpoint’s performance of it is very good. But, it brings back, so strongly, the (Miami Vice) pilot. So, then you’re dealing with memory, cultural memory of the show, as memory exists in the audience and the memory of the show in the minds of the audience is very different for different people. People remember the show differently. They liked different things about it. Some folks liked the pastels and the flamingos, other folks liked the writing and the power of the stories in the first couple of years, other folks may have been younger when they saw it. The real pitch for a Miami Vice movie should have been with the original cast and crew, but this time, everyone is old, and there is a case or a situation where Crockett and Tubbs experience are needed, and they have to come out of retirement, but everything is changed, they are outdated, and they have to adapt and deal with. But it's a more personal and intimate story, like the consequences of all those years trying to do something, but ultimately failing, it's a character study movie. There's action, and visual and all that, but dealing with a more personal approach, more intimacy from these characters. It's like The Irishman, but for Miami Vice.

If you could make seven Miami Vice big-screen movies, but only using the TV series scripts, which ones would they be? I would definitely use the Calderon plotline "Brother's Keeper" "Calderon Return1&2", "Sons and Lovers", and "Afternoon Plane". The "Golden Triangle" two-parter, and "Prodigal Son". Yep, very Tubbs centric. Of course, some plots from other episodes could be inserted like Trudy's first 'righteous shoot' of a criminal, "Evan" a very underrated but fan-favorite episode, that as youth taught me a lot about hate, stereotypes, and friendship. "Back in the World" & "Stone's War" are also good editions. Also in regards to "Calderon Returns" I always was impressed with the hitman known as the "Argentinean" who in 'real-life' is a world-renown competition shooter. Anyway, I thought it would have been a nice twist if after [spoiler alert] the hitman was finally killed, everyone let their guard down. Only we the audience find out that the "Argentinean" was a twin.

Absolutely! There is one particular scene in the pilot episode (where "Leon" leaves the court house and the Tubbs is watching him). That specific Jan Hammer piece sounds like it came right of DePalma's film.

Miami the city had significant cultural & economic factors at play too. 1980s. Drugs, $$$, women, night life 🏖🍹🍸🍷🚤🌇 were all a part of the Miami scene. I'd add that Crockett & Tubbs were not Miami cops but: Dade County Metro. That is a real 🚔 agency but its now: Miami Dade Metro County.

A fair conclusion describing the attention to detail, the "eyes" from Smugglers Blues being just one, the almost desperate plagiarism of dialogue as a perpetual game of snap! However the attempt to demonstrate a direct "lifting" from series to movie by citing an aeroplane that flies and a power boat that well...... whooshes over the water into a setting sun is much more ambiguous. What else would a director do with such resources..... show Ricardo Tubbs throwing up and dodgy burrito in glorious technicolour? whilst posing the question was it a rough trip to the Bahamas or the second rate, on set cuisine! Never the less the central tenant of your argument has been easily passed like a good salad with French dressing (but without sultana's... why do they do that stuff?) and does not deserve any more of the borrowed physic powers the the aforementioned Mr Tubbs might claim to have in a real/unreal world scenario.

I saw the fist airing of the Pilot episode way back in the 80's and I have been a Miami Vice fanatic ever since. Despite being extremely discerning about it I actually liked the Director's Cut of the 2006 film (the theater version I saw cut out the boat race in the beginning which did a lot to orient you to what was happening at the beginning so excluding it was a big mistake). The movie had its problems though regardless of which "cut". The biggest and most unforgivable of all was the exclusion of Jan Hammer. The music in the movie was actually pretty good but still, Jan Hammer's Miami Vice scoring is the greatest original TV music of all time and to not include his work in the movie is inexcusable.

Incredible how Mann copies his previous work (HEAT, anyone?) and not ONE critic has the balls to call him on it for his lack of originality and keep calling him a ´visionary´...besides that, his use of digital work many times sucks visually making many scenes in his movies from Collateral onwards look like crappy reality shows (in PUBLIC ENEMIES he enven used in some shots cell phones to record the action and it looks like homemade stuff).

@lazarusagame
@lazarusagame 6 ай бұрын
Hi 455eley! You're absolutely right! One of my favorite moments in Mann's commentary was about that part of the film: "I was in a quandary whether or not to use "In The Air Tonight" or a piece of score. That quandary was emblematic about the whole prospect of making Miami Vice as a feature film...the music is "In The Air Tonight" by a group called "Nonpoint" and if the music had never existed until 2006, it would've been obvious to go ahead and use it here because it's a terrific piece, but it brings back, so strongly, the pilot. So, then you're dealing with memory, cultural memory of the show, as memory exists in the audience. And, the memory of the show in the mind of audiences is very different for different people. People remember the show differently. They liked different things about it. Some folks liked the pastels and the flamingos. Other folks liked the writing and the power of the stories in the first couple years. Other folks may have been younger when they saw it...and just kinda liked grooving on a style. So, the motion picture, I knew, was going to be delivered into an audience that had a complex and divergent set of attitudes about it. So, the advantage of it, in a way, is that the brand name, Miami Vice is known. The disadvantage is that it means many different things to many different people." Sorry for the long-winded response. Anyway, thank you so much for watching!

The movie was alright was far as movies go but I'd rather watch a couple episodes of TV Miami Vice vs the movie. I only wish they would have incorporated the original actors into the movie because at the time they were still young enough to make it work. They were the reason people loved Vice to begin with but instead there was nary a mention of them. I love Michael Mann's productions but IMHO it was a mistake to not involve the original actors in some way.

Excellent and creative work on your part. Such a pity the same can't be said about anything current in today's Hollywood. For the better part of three decades, they continue to artistically bankrupt. They are down to comic books and spaceman, with CGIs, laser special-effects, and 35 seconds worth of plot delivered by rappers, pop stars, and reality TV show drop outs. The TV show Miami Vice was excellent. The movie was just yet one more remake, as they will continue to do, and it's only the fault of the public who continues to patronize them.

As a fan of Miami Vice, I think the movie was great! My biggest problem was that there wasn't any character development. However, all the beats of the show (as this was shown above) were in the movie. Now the A-Team movie was an "insult" to the original considering they weren't protecting anyone other than themselves.
@lazarusagame

I think the film is great as well, Nathan. Regarding the lack of character development, it can almost be seen as a movie without the first act. It was as if Mann thought "Everyone already knows who these characters are." and we dive right into conflict. I haven't seen the A-Team movie.
@n.d.m.515

If you are familiar with the A-Team, imagine if the show was all about them trying to clear their names. No vigilantism against bad guys above the law, no helping the weak, and no group cohesion. They are just on the run and that is all. The heart and soul was gone, leaving a thin veneer of similarity. Miami Vice did everything right save character development.

I’m a huge MV fan, but the movie was a bit of a let down. For one, the cinematography in the series was excellent….pure artistry, but the movie looked like it was filmed with an old camcorder….all shaky like an episode of Cops. Also, the episodes that the movie was based weren’t the best episodes of the series, albeit far better than the movie version.
@lazarusagame

I appreciate your feedback and always enjoy the conversation. I think the biggest issue people have with the movie is the A) the look of the film. It was mostly dark and didn't have a lot of the visuals often associated with the beauty of Miami; and B) the lack of rapport between Crockett and Tubbs. The film is ultra serious and Mann clearly wanted it to not be a nostalgia trip. The reason I love the movie is, it reminds me of (for me) the heart of Miami Vice, which were the fascinating and powerful stories that we got to see every week, in the first few seasons, anyway. As for, "the episodes the movie was based weren’t the best episodes of the series". This, of course, is subjective, but "Smuggler's Blues" is my favorite episode of the entire series, so you lost me there. : -) Anyway, thanks so much for watching, Justin. Much appreciated!

Real shame they couldnt bring back the original Vice crew for the movie. Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas ARE Sonny and Tubbs.
