I re-watched this recently and I noticed something. I think everyone recognized that the Miami Vice movie contained a lot of element from Smuggler's Blues, but after rewatching Prodigal Son, I realized it also had elements of Prodigal Son, namely in that at the beginning, the op. sec. of a federal agency has been compromised and many of its agents killed, which means that Crockett and Tubbs get deputized as federal agents to try to flush out the killers. In Smuggler's Blues, the villain is a lone, corrupt DEA agent going after individual smugglers.

Gene Simmons was great in it. I thought the NYC backdrop was different and it helped. However, Crockett and Tubbs looked out of place in NYC in terms of their fashion and accent. But the Prodigal Son is a masterpiece and great TV.

In a way it stuck with the storylines with Tubbs arc. Tubbs went to Miami to persue Cardorne. In this episode, he returns to his hometown of NYC with his partner Crockett. It was a way for the show to tie in loose ends. I didn't like the way the New York cops treated Crockett & Tubbs. (Especially Tubbs)
@christopherhoyt71959 ай бұрын
Well, it was essential to tie NY into Miami Vice to gain a larger audience. Miami barely had a million people back then, and was really a has been city compared to the 1930s-50s. NY was already over 8 million, and with Long Island and other suburbs over 10 million. People only thought about Florida for two weeks per year when they went snow-birding. If you want a hit show, you have to give the NY audience something they can relate too and the series premier and Prodigal Son nailed it.

This one is good one too. Love the change of scenery from Miami to NY. Rico trying to be tough against Charles Dutton (Tubbs would've lost that fight). The soundtrack was hot with Glenn Frey and Phil Collins. Then we meet the real Mr. Burns from the Simpsons at the end.😂 Wish they would have made a sequel to this episode.
