Sara Pierce was an honors student at Kaplan University - but she says the school waited until a week before graduation to disclose that its nutrition program wasn't accredited. Unable to use her degree, Pierce makes a living waiting tables. Kaplan said it disclosed its program was unaccredited - on page 110 of the school catalog.

Kim Ventura Kaplan is regionally accredited though. It's just her program that wasn't accredited. Such a situation isn't uncommon. There are a few state universities in my state that are regionally accredited, but their business programs aren't accredited by AACSB. Ultimately, it's up to the student to do their research before they take on such an expensive and time consuming process.

It sounds to me like the woman in this video didn't take out a loan to pay for the course, she took out a loan to pay for living expenses (food, gasoline etc.). Loan providers wouldn't blink before handing that out.

Aren't public colleges funded by the state tax, at least in part? Which is why in-state and out-state cost differ One of the reason I believe that colleges are not fully financed by tax is to discourage people from enrolling for a "fling" so to speak. As some major and courses are, to put it politely, not very helpful in job seeking. If something is fully funded by tax, and thus "free" to people who actually wish to take advantage of it, it will be taken advantage, in both the proper way and in all the wrong ways. By always having a personal cost, even if relatively low (public/community tuition are pretty low), people will only take what they actually believe to be useful in some ways.

The for for profit college/trade school industry has very important friends in congress. Usually if the there is a program benefiting any education or heath initiative the "for profit" sector must have a major share in the funding stream or there will be no Republican support and much opposition. Hence these diploma mills flourish.

it's not common knowledge. the first "college" I went to was ITT Tech. I didn't know that ITT Tech's degrees were worthless and it was $40,000 ($40k) for just an associates degree. In my understanding, I thought that, because it was $40k, it must've been a really good school considering how expensive it was and how it had people from their respective industry giving lessons there... Not only that, I didn't know that the United States allowed for businesses to make their own colleges, for profit! I thought ITT Tech was a sort of private trade school and I've always heard about how private schools usually had successful students. Not only that, I didn't know that the U.S. Government allowed giving money to for-profit colleges to when it came to student loans. (my loan was government financial aid). I saved my own ass because, just for kicks, I decided to look up reviews on ITT Tech and found a massive ton of horror stories where people graduated there but couldn't find a job because the employers considered ITT Tech degrees as a joke and these people were $40k to $80k in debt (bachelors is another $40k). I dropped out from there and didn't look back. I was very lucky considering that I was only $10k in debt let alone $40k-$80k in debt...

Because there are more to a degree then accreditation. Especially if you wish to be self-employed in some technical skill centered field, you don't need accreditation at all, you just need the actual skill. And then some employers are nice enough to give interview to people w/o accreditation, as that does not necessarily indicate whether the person have the actual skill and knowledge. And offering accredited courses tend to cost more than offering courses w/o them, so what ends up happening is people who need the skill but not the accreditation end up paying more for what they don't actually need. There is nothing wrong, for example, for a housewife to take a few nutritionist courses to better take care of her kids, without ever planning to seek a job in the field. Why should she pay for the bureaucratic overhead because some other people are incapable of doing proper research? Now, I do agree SOME courses should require accreditation. Say serious medical studies. But then we get into the murky water of who decide which courses needs it. So in practice, it's unlikely to be a thing. Edit: to be clear, I have been a victim of poor research myself. So I can sympathize with the confusion of researching school subject matter. It's a bit of a complicated story so I won't go there. But still, the "masses" should not be punished for the mistake of the few.
@cassievivianethridge1821

So with Dietetics/Nutritional sciences it's pretty clearly spelled out(hi this is my field) that you have to go through an accredited school to become an RDN or registered dietitian nutritionist. Once you do that you have to do an ACEND accredited internship and then pass an exam to become an RDN and receive your license to practice. That's generally how to do it nationally, state registration and legislation varies from State to state. Because dietetics is constantly evolving they want all dietitians to have the same knowledge base but it's a four year program so how do you do that? You make the schools be accredited by the people who certify the practicioners. So why isn't this law? Well if you've taken a chemistry course in college chances are you heard about the American chemical society and you took their test at the end of the semester. Well that's kinda like common core for colleges. The colleges go to board and say "you know about this shit how do we level this playing field?" So then the colleges and ACS or what have you work together to make the curriculum so everyone has the same basic chemistry knowledge to go towards higher education. It's not a law because it's something the college sets up with a notable agency. And schools don't have to teach based on these standards because it's higher education.

Owen Brady Kaplan is regionally accredited, just like every other major university. Some licensing boards require you to attend programs that are accreditated by industry-specific bodies. Kaplan's nutrition program didn't meet this criteria. The degree isn't completely worthless, though it was significantly overpriced. The regional accreditation allows her to take it to any university and apply for graduate school, something she'd have to do for a career in nutrition anyway.

I think most schools, any except the most prominent, would probational accept an in-state student w/ a non-accredited degree. Because if, despite the lack of credits, the student can actually perform, it's all fine and dandy. If not, they can always kick the student out after the first semester or year. Thou even for the probational acceptation, they are usually required to get some recommendation letter and maybe take some test to get in, so a bit more hoops than regular students. I mean I got probational acceptance into my masters with shit grades from my undergrad study (accredited thou), just had to jump a few hoops. I'm sure a good grade in unaccredited will have more or less the same pull, as long as it's not a literally bought diploma. I'm sure that most school are aware of Kaplan's situation, in that it's not a complete scam in that they actually teach something despite all its other faults.

Her particular program isn't accredited by the national authority that accredits nutritional programs. To get into grad school, they only require that the undergrad degree come from a university that is regionally accredited at the time you attended.

My wife got an online degree and they said they would get accredited and then didn't. Then they got sued but we never saw any of that money. It's not always black and white. Just be careful there are a lot of for-profit institutions like Kaplan. Make sure where ever you go, the program is nationally accreddited. I'm transferring into engineering school, and most employers won't take degrees from non-ABET accredited schools. Some of these schools are Devry, Globe, Everest, ITT tech... Ect. Any public tech school will offer these degrees for much cheaper. They also love to prey on vetrerans for their GI bills.

Bingo. Every time I hear how someone was sold on this... that is the question which I ask. You have a great program... fine. Takes about five minutes to look up Department of Labor statistics, five more to look up pay scales, another five minutes to look up various groups dealing with nutrition education and ask what they think about it, an couple of days to send emails to some nutritionists or companies which deal with nutrition. And of course you can simply ask the college for things such as graduation rates, lists of former graduates as references, student/alumni societies, companies who recruit at their campuses, etc., etc. And of course... does any real degree good for actual jobs come online? How are you possibly going to learn about nutrition without serious chemistry and biology classes? With real labs? Seeing actual people?

It's all based on terms of agreement. It's like that dude that advertised donation to Trump, people donated 20 Million dollars. But the money was for him, not Trump. Then legal experts looked into the terms of agreement, found out he specifically says that none of the donations are for the Trump campaign. All the money was donated to the individual. So legally can't do nothing because Terms of Agreement are a base of Contract. Similar it's Facebook apps, it specifically says it will collect all of your data. From contacts, to Google search, to your text message. It's the price of using the app, ones accepted, even if you delete the apps. They still will collect and analyse all of your life.

Here's a suggestion--gather up all your coursework, papers you wrote, exams, and especially course syllabi. Find an accredited state school with a degree-granting nutrition program in your area. Make an appt with the faculty member who serves as the Director of Undergraduate Studies, which you can probably find online. See what they are willing to do for you. Be sure to emphasize your academic achievement. You may be able to transfer some or all of the Kaplan coursework. There will probably be some additional coursework, but you've come this far . . . Despite this setback, you'll finish with a REAL degree from a REAL school. Good luck.

In 2019 I was in hospital. They had a lot of student nurses doing rounds with staff RNs. A commercial for another of these for-profit paper mill nursing schools aired on TV during one of their visits to my room. I had noticed that all of the student nurses wore tunics with their school logos -- five accredited four-year university programs plus one community college program. I asked the RN if any for-profit colleges sent their students to their hospital. She said that they never accommodated for-profit college nursing programs at the hospital because most of those students are so badly trained that they were likely to kill patients from sheer incompetence. Then I went to a rehab center and the ONLY student nurses walking the halls there were from for-profit schools.

As a former college counselor, there should be a POSTED warning just like the Surgeon General's warning on tobacco products as regards non-accredited degrees & the schools which offer said regarding their, lack of, marketability, acceptance by employers and graduate schools, and their zero credibility for entrance into certified professional work fields. I believe gov't educational agencies on the state & federal level should warn the public & potential students as to the full nature, character, and consequences of unaccredited programs. If we warn/inform people as to health hazards and require organizations to post dietary content info, California Proposition warnings, etc. we should do the same with regards to these "hustler" schools. They should "upfront" communicate the lack of accrediation & what that can actually mean.

It shouldn't be the responsibility of the students. It should be the responsibility of the state. Kaplan knows it's misleading people. Why the hell would an institution offer a program that is not accredited? What's the point otherwise? Why would someone want a degree from a program that is not accredited? For fun? Yeah, right. Their business model is to simply mislead vulnerable people. They can create the perception of value (e.g., improved career and lifestyle, flexible schedule) without the cost of accreditation. There is no point to offering a degree that is not accredited. They should be forced to advertise their program as non-accredited.

If you’re seeking a career change that ultimately requires some sort of certification or licensure, you need to contact the regulatory body and get a list of accredited programs/schools and confirm that your school is in fact going to put you on the right path. It is hard with all these online degree mills that make their programs sound awesome, but they are FOR PROFIT! They’re selling a product just like anything else. Buyer beware.

I was doing Kaplan and they straight up told me that with want I wanted to do I'd have to look into what else I'd need for teaching in my state.I could get the core classes done and even the other classes needed, but there'd be more offline stuff for Public school teaching. I didn't finish school at the time BUT I did learn a lot.

Lemon Lindsay Exactly right. If she was so passionate about the field she was entering, she would have done her researched and learned that the degree wouldn't have helped her. This is a typical case of "buyer's remorse" and she is not taking ownership of her own poor decision. Not only that, but it looks like she's a single mom with two kids (judging from the picture the photo at 3:47) so I don't really feel sorry for her being in debt. You're supposed to get your education BEFORE you have kids.

What if a woman's husband abandons her? Or dies or gets disabled? Sometimes people have situations where they find themselves needing to start over or change gears after kids are born. We should not be down on her because she wanted better. If it was a man you wouldn't say such a thing.

_ _ If it was a man you wouldn't say that about the kids. Nice way to put down a woman who was trying to do right and better. You don't know if she needed to get away from an abuser, or if the father abandoned the family or is dead or disabled - maybe she expected to be a stay at home and it didn't work. I know two women who ended up at school after kids were born. One father died, one father came home from the military and was really messed up and unable to work or cope. Life is crap at times and we have to do what we can as is.

Caitlin Broza no one here is saying that it's bad of her to want better I did that's why I originally was looking and researching and decide to do online college now. Later I ended up not being able to go through this to go back to school but what I learned was valuable. The thing is I want to go back to Kaplan or whatever it's called now even if I could because they don't do my degree anymore rules changed and so they don't do my degree anymore. Because I decided to go to Kaplan originally I did a lot of research on what they needed for their degree but they had to do surgery I wanted how good it would be afterwards would I be able to get my actual teaching certificate which by the way the answer is no online you can't because it's by State so it wouldn't work anyways but I would be able to get the base degree in childhood development at that time. I did a lot of research not just on Kaplan but I'm many different schools. I like that good and bad reviews I like that how they handed financial aid how they handled learning disability Aid. I put in a lot of research before choosing. That's why I even though it didn't work out and the degree in dip changing after I'd left and things changed I still don't regret going. To me from what I was able to gather and they said she didn't do extensive research before choosing the school and if this was a guy I would say the exact same thing when you are going for higher education if you're going to go for it whether you're going to an actual School private or state or online you should do extensive research religious private school. School is whether they are state or private or online they are all in reality for profit if you have to pay for it they are making a profit in some way shape or form you should always do your research that's funny when I tried to do it online I did extensive research this time. I will restate for one more time that if this person was a male my answers would be exactly the same. Also I'm sorry if there's any spelling errors my tablet kind of sucks

A couple of years ago I was taking art at a community college, and found out about a state scholarship for veterans. I applied hoping for a little money for art supplies. I didn't understand the full program until I got a letter stating that I was eligible to attend any state school for my masters. I had to call the state education office and ask if it was real because it was an amazing letter to receive. I am in graduate school (as an older online student) and I can understand how hard it is to get informed on all of the credentials, licensing, internships - I can understand how a young woman expecting a college to be legitimate and having her best interest at heart could be duped. My scholarship is limited to state university only so I am fortunate in that sense otherwise I may have been duped too. Things have changed a lot and I hope that this young woman can figure it out. It is a lot of debt for nothing and this isn't the America I grew up in.

My mom got a “degree” from Phoenix despite me warning her. When she started applying for jobs, basically every single employer told her that her degree was worthless and they get a lot of applications from people with for-profit degrees and whenever they have hired someone with a for-profit degree, it never works out because the person had no idea what they’re doing because they didn’t even get the right education for their fake degree. Do my mom, she qualifies for disability so she was able to get her student loan debt from it all forgiven, but I can’t even imagine how devastating it would be for someone young and desperate like this woman. Community college or trade school is your best bet. It’s not possible for a lot of people to attend classes because they have to work, but I think more colleges are offering night classes and online classes because of this.

All the advisors who work for these "mickey mouse" schools are motivated by greed and dishonesty. She is not to blame. The freaking corrupt system we live in and the authorities are to blame. I can not go out there doubting if the $20 notes Walmart gives me as change are legit or not. They cannot tell me that on page 110 of their catalogue says that their$20 notes are not legit. What they did to this woman is theft. I bet the owners are big political donors to powerful politicians.

I'm a community college professor, and this woman's story just kills me. She put in the time and effort and way more than the financial cost necessary for a degree, only to find herself in this pitiable situation. Anytime one of my students tells me they're leaving our school to take a quick 2-year to 10-month program or any other completely online prog with a for-profit school, I try to counsel them. Unfortunately, the predatory nature of these institutions indoctrinate students by convincing them that they are making the best decision even if others disagree--sometimes even preparing them with rebuttals. It's so important that states invest in their community colleges to offer more distance education and online education. I'm lucky my state does. Had this woman chosen to attend/had access to a community college DE prog, she would have been ready to transfer to a 4-yr at the time she found out her degree was not accredited, and might be in a grad prog by now--I see the drive in her that could have achieved that. My advice to anyone considering a for profit education is to go to a community college first, but also to consider the program being offered logically--in nutrition for example, if every accredited institution in the country requires practical labs in their nutrition program, why would this totally online program, in less time, be equivalent?

Government closed down last Cordon Bleu because the people who graduated were in debts of 50k and up. the people I know who graduated from there told me it was worthless and you'll be in major debt by the time you are done so I went to a community college instead for the program I wanted to go for.

Accreditation is so important. Advice. Talk to a legal aid or State Bar for attorney. If you still want to peruse, find accredited online school that will accept your degree to pursue a masters, you have the grades so aid will be available. Talk to administrations and financial aid separately.... I'm a former college counselor step up and over the problem... Good luck and God Bless you always...
