Miami Vice was the best crime series of all time. Two things really caught my attention at the time: the soundtrack, which was exquisite, and these guest appearances. Many were still little known and I didn't even notice when I watched it for the first time, but the musicians were a big surprise. I remember when I saw Miles Davis and I thought "no way!" A beautiful compilation, but I need to mention a few that are missing and were really special: Iman Lee Iaccoca Lawrence Fishburne Willie Nelson Wesley Snipes Dom King George Takei Greetings from Brazil.

Miami Vice being the best crime series of all time is arguable, as I believe that distinction goes to The Wire (and that is a hill I will gladly die on), but what I will agree with you on is the significance of the soundtrack, and how important of a part it played in the show. As a person who did the bulk of my growing up in the 80s and 90s, the only other crime show I can remember where the music and musical artists who were featured on the show were a significant driving force for the amount of eyes that tuned in every week was New York Undercover.

Johnson had been making $30,000-35,000 per episode for his role as James "Sonny" Crockett during Vice's first two seasons. With the show a massive hit after the second season, Johnson felt he deserved a pay rise that better reflected the huge success the series had become (the highest-paid television actor at the time, Tom Selleck, was making $250,000 per episode on Magnum P.I.). Universal offered to increase Johnson's pay to $38,500 an episode, but he turned this figure down, reportedly pushing for a wage of up to $100,000 per episode. When this was declined, he walked off the set and refused to return to the production unless he received a level of pay that he deemed more befitting of the show's popularity. Universal began filming what was originally to be the third-season opener, "El Viejo", around Johnson's absence, but this soon proved to be an impossible task. Within a week, the studio had filed a $20 million breach-of-contract suit against Johnson, and issued the star an ultimatum: return to the series or be replaced. The two actors considered as Johnson's successor were Broadway star Treat Williams (Once Upon A Time In America, Deadwood) and Mark Harmon (NCIS), who at that time had recently left the series St. Elsewhere. In either case, Williams or Harmon would not replace Johnson as Crockett, but rather play a new partner for Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, thereby allowing Johnson to return in the future. Just a few hours after Universal filed their lawsuit, and before a definitive replacement could be named, Johnson relented and returned to work for an undisclosed amount of money, ending the holdout.

I’ve rewatched it… the stories were hit and miss. But great nostalgia (if you’re old enough - great history if you’re not), enjoyable music, little gem episodes in each season (Out Where The Buses Don’t Run), post cocaine/pre AIDS parties, cool cars & boats, and great moments with actors before they were stars. Michael Talbott (Detective Switek) and John Diehl (Detective Zito) were scene-stealing funny. Anyone with Sonny’s mouth and body count wouldn’t last long as a cop, but you just don’t care… it’s make believe - good guys make politically incorrect statements and bad guys get shot. Welcome to the 80’s.

There's still a bunch of awesome celebrity guest stars who weren't on this list. I think the list should be a top 100.

Since Glenn Fry did Smuggler’s Blues and “You belong to the city” which were made for the show, let’s put him on the show and he looks like he’s been dabbling still with the nose candy.

Must admit that there are quite a few that I haven't really heard of, but that's probably because they are on US TV. But it was a great way for many up and coming actors and actresses to show what they were capable of and so that will be why many of them are Hollywood household names now.
