Overall the "better" microphone is the AT2020, and at a 1/4 of the price of the SM7B. Now, the SM7B gives you that "radio" voice, as it is a bit bass heavy. Both are great on its own. Different uses, but also both can be used for the same. Maybe my perfect "combo" would be having both, and record my voice with both and then equalize and give the right amount of volume to each, to achieve my desired tone. LIke playing in photoshop, but in the music realm! ;)

Sm7b sounds like a there’s a cone, at2020 sounds natural.
@tyisafk4 жыл бұрын
That's more or less due to the fact that this is comparing a condenser to a dynamic. Condensers sound more natural in general, while dynamics have an easier time picking up the lower end of the spectrum, though with the 7B, it has a pretty flat frequency response, meaning it tends to capture all frequencies equally. I would use dynamics for podcasts, live shows and recording loud instruments, but I would use condensers for voice work or acoustic instruments like a guitar.

@BenoniStudio2 жыл бұрын
The SM7B is a great mic, but when you compare it to a condenser, it won't sound "as good". This is simply because condensers are more accurate with audio reproduction than dynamic mics are, it comes down to physics and how the diaphragms/capsules operate. But since condensers are more sensitive and accurate, that comes at a cost. They may pickup more background noise and mouth noises vs. a dynamic mic. Something like the SM7B won't reproduce audio as accurately as a condenser, it's simply impossible because of how dynamics work. But just because something is "not as accurate" does not mean that people won't like the sound. The SM7B is warm and can be boxy. But paired with the proper pre-amp, EQ, and compressor, it can sound really good. Being a dynamic mic, it should reject more background noise, of course if you are already in a quiet room that doesn't mean much. You also have to consider the mounting of the mic. The SM7B comes in a yoke mount which makes is easy to get into position. The SM7B will never sound as "open" as a condenser, but that doesn't make it a bad mic - its just a different sound. Both of these mics are great to have in your mic locker. The AT2020 will pair well with the Scarlett. If you go with the SM7B you will have to also get something like a Cloudlifter because the Scarlett does not have enough gain to properly drive the SM7B. A couple other mics you might want to consider are the Shure MV7 and Blue Yeti Pro. Both of these mics have effects built-in and are geared toward live streaming and gaming, but can also be used for music creation. I don't have a Yeti Pro yet, but I do have the MV7 and will try to get a review out ASAP.

At first I really loved it so I bought it, but I'm a very bright soprano and my high notes sound like they hit a WALL which was super hard to mix for my demos. I'm not a mixing pro so I wanna get the best sound out raw first. I personally feel like the sound quality from the SM7B is easier to work with because it's not as harsh.

If the cloudlifter is not mentioned in the video then it was not used. It's listed in the description because it is a popular addition when using a Shure SM7B. The Mic Wars 2 videos will use the Cloudlifter for the SM7B and other dynamic mics. Being a part of the Amazon Influencer program allows us to make a small amount of money when people use our links for products that we like and suggest. Each Mic Wars video takes around 4-6 hours to produce. There is a TON of work that goes into these. If we can't make money from the videos then we can't continue to make videos for free and we will have to go to a subscription model that charges $10-$30 a month per person, considering we have over 1000 videos. AT2020 will be incredibly sensitive to room noise and other intrusive sounds... pc fans and such... a dynamic mic will be better for a streaming scenario etc where you don't have post processing available. mics in the $100-ish range also have a higher noise floor so you'll only get good results when you speak close to them, if you have to do preamp boosting the men will quickly separate themselves from the boys ($300 range mics are better in this regard)

Virtual Audio Cables are a godsend for this if you use those in conjunction with OP's video tutorial. Get Cakewalk if you don't already have a DAW (Cakewalk is 100% free, but if you have Adobe Audition by chance, that works too), set hardware to match your sample rate and have your mic as the input and Virtual Audio Cable Input as the output. From there, arm the track for recording and have monitoring enabled and from there you can add your VSTs to handle EQ, Compression, etc and it'll all pass through the virtual cable, then in OBS set your mic to Virtual Audio Cable Output. Just make sure you always have Cakewalk running and save the project in case you have to reboot so your audio tweaks always remain the same. OBS's VST implementation isn't reliable, imo plus it doesn't support the Ozone VSTs I use, and using a DAW will ensure it's system-wide as long as you set your default mic to the virtual one.

@BenoniStudio3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately subscriptions are very important on KZbin. And, unfortunately, "calls-to-action" work. Since most people only watch the first part of a video, you have to put these calls to action in the first part of the video. I wish I did not have to remind folks to subscribe. I wish KZbin would rank videos higher even when the channel has a low sub count. But this is the reality we are faced with. Adding in "like" and "subscribe" calls to action takes time when editing a video. I would prefer to not do it. Adding in these graphics distracts from the video. I would prefer to not do it. But, they work. These videos take several days to create. If they don't make money, the channel will go away. If people don't subscribe, the videos don't make money, because they are not ranking. Just how it is.

You will have more high end if you remove the foam. We do that test in the SM7B review video SHURE SM7B - REVEALED (Full Review & Demo) kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKOadJ-ge9CUmdk Just keep in mind, even though the AT2020 (or any condenser really) will sound "better" than a dynamic mic, it doesn't mean a condenser is the best for every project. Some people like the extended range of a condenser, but some people find podcasts or radio shows recorded with close mic'ed condensers to be too boomy (proximity effect) or too harsh on the high end.

The SM7B will reject noise better than the AT2020, but the Scarlett Solo will not drive the SM7B. The SM7B requires a minimum of 60dB of gain. Which would you recommend for a podcaster that is using a Behringer 1204usb mixer and using GarageBand? Budget is a moderate concern.
@BenoniStudio5 жыл бұрын
The Behringer mixer seems to have about 60db of gain for the mic pres. That is the absolute minimum you need for the SM7B. I've not used that mixer, so I don't know, but if you take the gain to 10 do you get any noise? Use headphones. Noise is usually increased when a pre-amp is driven hard, so for the SM7B you might want to consider getting something like a Cloudlifter or other pre-amp. That will take your price up to at least $500. (SM7B $399 + Cloudlifter type device ~$100) The AT2020 will work fine with the mixer, just turn phantom power on. They are both great mics, so let your budget determine what you get. If you go for the AT2020, you'll also probably want to get a windscreen or pop filter as well since it doesn't come with one.

The shure was and is used for voice overs and to record MJ's thriller song but that was decades ago now and that was the best around then. What about noise rejection or plosives?? Surely the SM7B is much better than the AT2020 in respect to these. The SM7B comes with a foam shield and a metal grate so pops should be significantly less of an issue. Love the AT2020, I've owned 3 of them. If you are recording in less than a sound isolated environment not having to worry as much about pops and having better noise reduction may be worth the cost so you may still want to consider the SM7B.

I actually like the audio technical more tbh. It seems to have more high range, and in the hardcore vocals I plan to be recording it seems to be what I'm looking for. Any thoughts?
@BenoniStudio4 жыл бұрын
If you are going to be doing hardcore vocals like screaming, I would actually suggest a dynamic microphone if you can only afford one. A common technique to use for screaming is a dynamic and condenser at the same time. Sometimes even a handheld dynamic so you can cup the mic for guttural growls. There's no problem with using just a condenser, but you'll have to develop good mic technique to avoid overloading it when screaming.
@EnvisionedBlindness4 жыл бұрын
@@BenoniStudio I definitely can afford the dynamic and I appreciate the response because that's exactly what I'm looking for in a mic. Thanks

@@EnvisionedBlindness SM58 is a great choice for hardcore vocals. And please GOD do not cup the mic in a studio setting... for live shows, I get it. But all you're doing is damaging the quality of the recording. You can get said effect with processing without losing any of your width.

@@EnvisionedBlindness Well, referring to a very well known brand as "Audio Technical" and asking what kind of type of microphone to use for a certain style of audio is a good way to get dismissed as "some kind of noob." I wasn't trying to be rude. Just trying to help in any way I can. Good luck.

Is Nectar audio only used for editing or could I use it live for say online gaming. Or should I get a gate and plug it into my preamp?
@BenoniStudio5 жыл бұрын
You could try it live, but if you monitor the signal it may be a bit delayed depending on the processors you are using, so you may want to monitor the direct. You can get the trial of Nectar and see if it works for what you need.

You can't check microphones without testing different frequencies intensity. You should've sing in a wide range (go lower pitches and high as you can), and even bring a female singer (supran will be best) to test those high frequencies respond. Otherwise you just talk, which is ok for Rap or Podcast recording. Don't get me wrong, great video and effort, just a bit incomplete. Cheers.

@3D1ofakind2 жыл бұрын
SM7B has great overall range, but sounds muffled in the higher frequencies due to its great bass pickup, which is great if you have a deeper voice, or plan on doing purely podcast/vocal only content as it fills the whole spectrum. But for vocals in music it's a completely different story. You'll be equalizing a lot of what makes the SM7B sound how it does to fit well into tracks. Trust me, the SM7B is a better microphone, just not for everything. I always find myself turning down the bass output on my monitors whenever I hear someone using the SM7B with default EQ.

I find it so funny that people are comparing apples to oranges. You are taking a $99 large diaphragm condenser microphone and comparing it to $399 large diaphragm dynamic microphone. (Not to mention the A-T is much more open...B/C condensers offer a wider frequency response.)

The at2020 usb is almost 1/5th the price of of the SM7B in my country (85 euros for the at2020 xlr and 375 for the SM7B). Absolute steal of a microphone. It's as expensive as a Modmic 5.0 while sounding considerably more natural and it picks up my lower voice better. Very sensitive to aimbient noise and vibrations though, definitely needs a good stand with shock mount and if you're sitting 1 inch from your mic, get a pop filter aswell.

Audio Technica 2020's build quality is just as good as Shure, have you ever held one in your hand? They look just as good as some mics that cost up to $3k. No one is judging by price, we are simply given our opinion what sounds better as the video asks us to decide. AT2020

As en AV tech and podcast expert, I would go for the Electro-Voice RE20 mic (I love the deep bassy voice) but right now I’ve got a 3 mic setup using 3 audio-technica at2020 in a sound treated room and my podcasts are sounding GREAT (for the price I payed for the mics). So I don’t know why you are saying that? Condensors and dynamics are 2 different types of mics. Both are great types Condensors are more sensitive and need 48v/phantom power plus you have to use them in a acouticaly perfect room to get the best out of them. Dynamics are less sensitive but you can use them without 48V/phantom power and in a room that is not acousticaly perfect and get great results. Why do you think condensors are more for studio as to dynamics are more for live events?

The whole comment section has a bad taste for audio, the at 2020 is not crisper or better, you just have bad tastes for hearing, the sm7b is a legendary microphone that has been used in radio shows and professional recording studios, and used for MJ's thriller album, and has been around for 40 years, I'm not gonna scroll through the comments and sit here listening to deaf people talking about how a xlr version of a plug and play budget microphone sounds better than a professional grade level industry standard microphone, get better hearing yall and if there is hissing then he didnt use a cloudlifter Cl-1 or fethead.
@nttv10954 жыл бұрын
Not to mention that he used the sm7b wrong, it's a dynamic microphone and bc he said he was 6 inches away that's too far from the mic, he has to be right up to the mic for it to work properly, this was an unfair test because he didnt try to get the full effect from the mic.
@BenoniStudio4 жыл бұрын
There are tests at several distances. 2-6 inches is within the tolerance of most dynamic mics at normal gain settings.
