The Many Saints of Newark is the long-awaited prequel movie to the classic mob drama The Sopranos, bought to us by the very creator of The Sopranos, David Chase. As The Sopranos is a household name, watched and re-watched by millions of people and counting, the movie, which came out 14 years after the show ended, of course generated hype and now that the movie is out numerous people having been giving their thoughts on the film, and that includes Michael Franzese.
Now I’m guessing people who frequent my channel will know who Michael Franzese is, but for those who don’t, he is a former New York mobster who was a capo of the Colombo crime family. He was even name dropped and depicted briefly in Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas. Perhaps his most well know and lucrative racket was a scheme he helped implement to defraud the government out of gasoline taxes, and he claims that at the height of his career he generated $8 million dollars a month. Franzese is something of an enigma because he is one of the few rare cases of a high-profile mobster leaving the life, after being released from prison in the 90s, and still beign a successful and wealthy businessman. Not turning rat, not going into witness protection or anything like that, but just straight-up retiring, denouncing mob life as evil. His retirement sparked a need to relocate with his wife and children, after death threats were sent to him and contracts placed on his head, including allegedly, one by his own father, who was also in the mob.
Now, Michael Franzese didn’t like The Many Saints of Newark, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. He’s completely within his right not to like it, in fact it seems the film in general has had a negative reaction from audiences, but with some of the things Franzese came out with during this review, I was like “waaat?”
So let’s take a look.
