That "Kiss of Death" Michael gave Fredo is one of the most powerful scenes in cinema history. Fredo who was such a care free spirit in shear terror cause he knows what is coming

Did you notice that we see Santino and Fredo crying as infants, but the first time we see baby Michael, he's calm and silent? I'm really not sure if the filmmakers did that on purpose, or not.
@Arsolon618 Жыл бұрын
I feel the baby acting is very intentional. Baby Santino's first scene is him crying non-stop, forshadowing his temper. Fredo is first shown sick with pneumonia, foreshadowing him being the weakest of the brothers, and like you pointed out, Michael is shown as the calm chill baby.

On the directors commentary Coppola talks about how each of Vito’s sons have a certain piece of his personality - Sonny had his strength, Fredo his heart, and Michael his cunning. But they all failed in their own ways because they didn’t have the total package which is what made Vito who he was and allowed him to become the godfather while never losing sight of what was most important.

I see the difference in Michael and his father in the way they use power over others. Both are rooted in fear, but Vito’s end goal is to create a family legacy rooted in love. Michael chooses to take the power position in honor of his father, but earning his credibility came at the cost of sacrificing his family. The exact opposite of what it was intended. There’s such a difference between becoming powerful in your own right and becoming powerful because of family obligation.

LOTS of sequels aren’t as good, or the same level of quality as the previous movies. I think it gets blown way out of proportion. I’ve seen WORSE sequels that “weren’t as good as the previous films” WAY worse! But these are the same hardcores that call the sequel novels “fan fiction” because they were written by a writer who was hand-selected by Mario Puzos family. I enjoyed part 3, as well as the sequel novels. I didn’t go in expecting Shakespeare 😂

"I know it was you, Fredo. You broke my heart. You broke my heart!" Fun Fact: This was the first sequel to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Lost In Translation Fact: Robert De Niro spent four months learning to speak the Sicilian dialect of Italian in order to play Vito Corleone. Nearly all of the dialogue that his character speaks in the film was in Sicilian. Lost In Adaptation Fact: This movie and the first movie, was working off the same book. Francis Ford Coppola stripped all the backstory spread throughout the novel in order to focus on the main story. However when work began on this movie, he included all the material that was left out of the first movie. Method Director Fact: The door to olive-oil business was rigged so that it would not open if a nail was inserted into the lock. Coppola kept this a secret from Leopoldo Trieste, who played Signor Roberto, and his difficulty in opening the door was real. Coppola wanted to film Trieste, a known Italian comedian, improvising his way through the scene. When Genco Abbandando opens the door, Frank Sivero surreptitiously pulls the nail out. Music Enthusiast Fact: The orchestra that plays in the band shell during the party scene at Lake Tahoe was actually the Al Tronti Orchestra that played nightly for big names like Elvis Presley and Tom Jones at the Sahara Tahoe Casino/Hotel on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe while this film was being shot. Al Tronti himself sits in the orchestra in the front room (only seen in shadow). He wasn't allowed to appear as the orchestra conductor since he looked "too Italian" and the orchestra in the movie was supposed to be a West Coast group that is not able to play any traditional Italian music.

The cake is Cuba, that is why Hyman Roth says he only wants a small piece the country is not among his main interests. The ease with which people like that divide a country among their "friends" is something that will never change. Vito is worried about Fredo because in those days pneumonia was deadly and even more so for people without much money. The gun Vito used to kill Fanucci was his own, he gave Clemenza's guns back and never told him he knew what it was. It is not a trial as such it is a Senate Hearing.

When I watch The Godfather part 2 it gives me a sense of melancholy because of the story line between Vito and Michael . His father Vito had good reasons for not wanting Michael in the Family Business . All in all the Godfather trilogy is probably my favorite trilogy movie.... growing up Italian this movie was played in our home many times . I have so much respect for the actors men and women in this trilogy.... some scenes are very hard to watch happen . I still to this day cry every time I see Sonny get ambushed in the first Godfather (my personal favorite). I really enjoyed your reactions and comments for this movie and I think you are right about Michael forgiving his older brother but he broke Michael's heart and he paid the price . I don't like it at all but I get it . Your reaction to Kate's bombshell was priceless . I know that I was not surprised by Michael's response . I did not like it but I could not blame him or her . They both did what felt right to them and their family was torn apart . That was the saddest part for me ; at least Vito and his wife passed away still married and in Love with each other . Thank you for your reactions and comments and I hope you react to #DeathProof ~ 2007 by Quentin Tarantino

Hey Oscar, another great reaction. Please react to "The Godfather Coda" which the last of the Godfather movies. I think you'll like it. It's not as great as the first two, but it's still a good movie,and it ties everything together. I like the scene when Vito is on the roof of the brownstones. It reminded me of my childhood in Brooklyn, New York. We lived in a very old brownstone built in the mid 1800's, and my brother and I would go up on the roof in the summer. We could see the Statue of Liberty from where we lived, as well the Twin Towers. Sometimes, we'd hop from roof to roof because they were all close together. As I got older, I'd go up there to think or to write. I ended up being a writer for newspaper in NY that I still write for now. My parents were immigrants to the US, such good memories.

The way you interpreted the original movie as a tragedy was how the director saw the movie however most people didn't see it that way and saw it the way that guy in your comment saw it. This one was more of a tragedy for Michael. He was trying to raise his family's status in society, by doing that he lost his family. He lost his family's tradition and togetherness. He prioritized business over family, even though family is what he did it all for. Vito, no matter what, prioritized his family over business. When he would go home, everyone was waiting for him and happy to be around him. Opposed to Michael who came home and no one greeted him. Vito said it best in Part 1 when he and Michael were in the garden: I never apologized for how i lived my life, that was my livelyhood. To provide for my family. This movie highlights their difference. Vito was warm and welcoming, Michael is cold and distant. No matter what happemed to Vito, he never lost his heart, Michael's heart hardened more and more with everything that happened to him to the point he lost it.

The part I like about the final brother dinner scene is that Fredo is the only brother who SUPPORTED Micheal and shook his hand when Mike joined the Marines. Of ALL his brothers Mike had to kill the only one who unconditionally supported him no matter what he did. Sadly, Fredo was stupid and weak and liability. The VITO solution would have been to cut him out of the family loop to mitigate damage, like Vito did with Carlo. "GIve him a living, but never let him into the family business." VIto was perfectly willing to let a liability like Carlo live harmlessly but PRUDENTLY alongside his family. Mike had the same choice, but decided to kill a family member, instead. Interestingly, Michael said in the book, "You cant forgive betrayal because they will never forgive themselves, and that makes them unpredictable and dangerous."
@gimmeabreak6844 Жыл бұрын
He didn't want the power, never wanted it. He had the leadership role thrust upon him by circumstances. It was understood by him, his Dad, his brothers, EVERYONE, that Michael didn't want it and was never to be in "the family business". The long-term plan was for the family to be totally legit in his father's time, but as his Dad apologized, "I never wanted this for you, Michael, there just wasn't enough time." Ironically, Don Vito probably would have accomplished it if Solozzo and drugs hadn't come on the scene, which couldn't have been foreseen. The Don wouldn't have been shot, which sped up his aging and death, Sonny would be Don, with Tom as consiglieri, Fredo would be in a minor role as always. And Michael would be CEO of US Steel living in an estate in Connecticut with his wife and children or something. THAT was the vision. Michael's and his family's vision were destroyed and there was no one left to carry on...whatever it cost him. But he can never say, "I don't want this", and besmirch his father and brother's memories.
