MJ actually was very upset with this performance and was in tears afterwards because he intended to do more spins and stay on his toes longer after the initial moonwalk. It wasn't until the next day when Fred Astaire called him that he was a bit happier with his performance. Thanks for reacting to this. It's great to see younger generations enjoying performances I saw firsthand back in the 80s. He is the GOAT!

The story: This was actually the second half of Michael’s performance. The first half was a reunion with his brothers. What makes this so iconic and history making it’s not just the moonwalk itself. Up until this performance, Michael’s only stand out was when he did off the wall. It was a notable accomplishment, but he still had not established himself as a solo superstar. This event Motown 25, was a reunion for all of Motown‘s biggest stars to come back. The Jackson Five was one of Motown‘s most iconic groups, so they were expected to be there. All of the brothers agreed, except Michael. Michael not only wanted to separate himself from his brothers, he was also tired of doing television because he felt he had been overexposed doing the Jackson Family Variety TV Shows. No one could convince him, except Barry Gordy. But Michael only agreed to do it if he got to perform Billie Jean. Gordy was very reluctant because this was supposed to be about Motown with Motown songs. With Michael wouldn’t budge. This was the time, he knew it. So Gordy gave in. Michael and his brothers rehearsed their performance several times, and Michael even directed the performance to make sure the camera hit all the right angles. But no one knew what he was going to do on the second half in his solo spot. He wanted to make sure that he was able to misdirect the audience so that his hat would appear out of nowhere on the ground. Not even his brothers knew what was going to happen. The tone, style, and dance was so different, that the audience was captivated. But no one saw the Moonwalk coming. The dance had actually been around in the streets known as the backslide (The moonwalk was another dance), and he once saw it performed on soul train by Jeffrey Daniels (some reports say a dancer named Casper). He had them teach him to dance, and they thought he was a little stiff. But they were not prepared for how well he did when he performed it as the moonwalk. Not only did he perform at well, he enhanced the dance. For so long he had been practicing it and saving it for a special moment. Despite how monumental the performance was, Michael was so upset because he didn’t stand frozen on his toes at the end long enough. He was so disappointed that he cried afterward. The only two things that made him feel better were 1) a boy afterward told him how incredible his performance was. It made him so happy because he said children didn’t lie. 2) one of his idols, Fred Astaire, called him and told him “you’re one hell of a dancer!”

Various accounts of this performance say that people backstage and the band out front were in complete awe when MJ done that moonwalk. Fred Astaire called him up and handed his baton over to MJ citing that it was the best performance he had ever seen. Fred Astaire was extremely famous in his time. Also don't forget MJ was in charge of everything onstage camera angles/lighting everything. He was more than an entertainer. He gave you the full show.

I remember when this first aired. I was a kid back then. MJ's performance was a major event for my generation. MJ was the reason I tuned in to watch this show when it first aired. It was the first time many of us saw the backslide (later renamed The Moonwalk by MJ) on network television. It was this performance that every live performance MJ did of BILLIE JEAN was based on. This performance continued THRILLER's dominant album sales from it's release in Nov 1982 all the way to mid-1984 when Prince's PURPLE RAIN debuted at #1.

This (Motown 25) was a massive event when it was televised that night. I watched this at a huge Bar full of people that night, and you have to understand that anyone who was old enough to be at a Bar basically followed MJ from the beginning with the Jackson 5, so the Jackson 5 was a part of our youth and MJ solo was currently at his peak when this special aired on TV. Anyway the Bar was loud as can be before and during this whole show. Not dismissively loud, but excitedly loud about seeing all of the Motown stars back together again, like the Temps, Tops etc., but when the Jackson 5 came out an immediate hush fell over the crowd, to the point where you couldn't hear a pin drop (other than the big screen TV), and it stood that way from the J5 thru MJ performing Billie Jean. The only time the crowd let out a roar was when MJ did the Moonwalk, something we had never seen before, so it was shocking, almost seemed like he was levitating! 😲 Anyway when the show had ended there was about five minutes of stunned silence, as if everyone knew we just watched THE GOAT put on the greatest performance of his life. Once people got over the shock we all started to acknowledge the sheer greatness we had just witnessed. Even the next day that's all people were talking about, all of the media as well. We all knew it was a LEGENDARY PERFORMANCE generations that weren't even born yet would still be in awe of when they saw it, which is exactly what's happening all of these many years later.

I know this video was posted quite awhile ago and perhaps this sentiment has already been shared. So forgive me if this is redundant. But as the younger generations react to the Jackson 5 videos, you have to put it into perspective, there absolutely is NO Michael Jackson the superstar without his presence in the Jackson 5. That is where he honed his skills, sing and dancing with his brothers. So from a historical perspective of you really want to learn more about the early days, go back and watch as many of the J5 videos as you can. And learn more about the Afro hair styles. That’s a time when black folks began to embrace their natural hair, a time of the civil rights movements. Back then, we found our voice and we defined who we’re were as black people and the Natural or Afro played a huge role in that. We’re coming full circle once again. But now there are way more ways to wear our hair natural - not so in the 60s and 70s. When you said you don’t understand Afros you’ve got the tools right at your finger tips. It’s called Google. KZbin etc. Take the time to learn our history.
