For most vocalists, diving into Michael Jackson's style and sound can lead to instant discouragement.
Freedom, effortlessness and agility all combined with that signature sweet (good thin) timbre... It's impossible to replicate.
But if we don't go for replication and instead, try to understand his unique approach with our own voices in mind, we can unlock all sorts of amazing things about our voices.
For me, studying Michael reminds me to intentionally and dynamically place my voice... Rhythmically! So many subtle changes go by --usually un-noticed, as he percussively moves through a passage. He can light up a note with his signature grit and then pull back with unmatched finesse.
Join me in studying his isolated studio vocal performance of Dirty Diana... One of his more aggressive and agile songs!

I don't think Michael jackson gets enough recognition for his singing abilities. People get to distracted by the other stuff. So this was his 'rock' voice But he's got so many other sounds too. Rock with you, little susie, keep the faith. Please consider any of these for your videos too.

MJ's hiccups were the "up rhythms" he heard in his head. If you pick any song he does, and feel the beat, you will notice they are all timed on the off beat, usually just between the kick and snare drum. Purely subconscious because that is how he felt the music.

Crazy to think that his voice was already “damaged” by his late twenties due to all the stress put on his voice from years of childhood singing. It's almost like he's not singing the verses, he's telling a story but to himself. The emotion is very raw and probably quite personal, like he's right there experiencing these feelings that he's essentially just vocalising. There's no performance, he's letting something out.

You know people always talk about his Dancing. But, singers like myself knows it wasn't just the dancing. Why we liked those records, is because, we loved the way Michael emoted on those records. He delivered on the vocals since a child prodigy. No damn auto tune. It'. nice to break down why this man was a Legend. He had a unique way of expressing himself through Dance and Song. It's not easy. Michael made it look easy.

Very bizarre to me...even as a child I could recognise how incredibly dynamic his voice was. It really is something spiritual, you can't manufacture it, which is why it's very remarkable to me he was so soulful and yet reached the masses in the way he did. Ironically I think that was a part of his demise. It's one thing to be filthy rich and talented, it's another to be beloved and trusted and that was as much as a threat to people as his insanely lucrative publishing deals. The fact his dancing was so exceptional as well was I think too much for people to bare lol, it's like society can only let you be one thing, too blessed and people get envious, even subconsciously and have to downplay a person's brilliance. Very tragic, but many of us out here do recognise what a unique and powerful vocalist he was.

There's something about his dynamics that is amazing, he would turn on and off the distortion, but keep the "level" the same. a good example is the "Dirty Diana, no" the way the does the "Dirty Di" clean and the "ana" with full distortion, and then back to clean on the "no". There are songs where he does this even quicker.

I’m not speaking from a place of knowing, but I do hear MJ’s voice everyday, and practice his stuff daily. I feel like a big clue to singing his stuff can be found in how he spoke. I feel like that voice is just a softer version of the “little joe” voice. His voice was naturally deep, but by speaking in that “wimpy” voice I think he was constantly ironing out his registers, and practicing the coordination that needs to happen to sing high, to the point where it wasn’t even about registers. If you listen to his warm up video, he’s just doing scales, but they are “even” scales. The compression doesn’t change too much as he goes up, or air or even volume that much. There’s no sense of reach. He could sing it at any volume or compression level, but most importantly a medium compression, which I feel is the hardest. I feel like that is the baseline he was coming from, so that when it came time to record, he could go full on and let go and be aggressive, because his technique was ingrained. Like if you listen to songs like “the way you make me feel” or “another part of me”. None of us are pulling chest to be able to sing that 😂, and even the quality of his high notes, they sound “banshee” like to me, witchy, and younger sounding, ime that happens in my little joe voice, but idk, this is just my best guess, awesome video Chris!

What an expressive voice… And how you, Chris, analyze it and demonstrate with your own voice -mind blowing. Dude I am in no way shape or form a musical/voice engineer or expert like you, I just love listening to MJ. No idea how your video came up on my recommended but thankful it did, loved the breakdown of the Michael’s vocals. Made me appreciate the finesse and utter brilliance of his voice that much more. Well done mate 👍🏽

Unbelievable man. I mean his little affects and the way he has that growl in parts of his voice. Also how well he phrases the lines and emphasis and backs off as needed. Dude was just one of the best.

I just mentioned him in a comment on one of your videos yesterday. Haha! He's one of the best, no matter what genre you like. He can hear the influence on musicians throughout the 90s and even current. Dirty Diana and Give In To Me are some of my favorites because they have that rock vibe to em. His isolated vocals are really dope because you can hear all the little nuances in his voice.

There’s few songs that, every time I hear them, it sends shivers down my spine. This is one of them, and has done so since I was a kid. I grew up on Michael in the 90s, and eventually turned into a discerning metal head…this was a fun one to watch and listen to.

The best I can express it is...Michael Jackson was a vocal manipulator......some of the things he did vocally were sometimes technically, musically wrong...but produced impeccable sound. If you think this song was complex PLEASE vocally isolate "Is it Scary" by MJ...it'll blow your mind the transitions in that piece are unreal.

16:10 listening to this in isolation, most people would naturally sing Diana where as you can hear Michael singing Niana. I take it because the N doesn't choke off the voice as much as D does?

The trick in the song actually in the verse in the first half is absolutely no power but more trying to cry and hold it in bring emotion in that also fits the lyrics., till the second part comes in and then the frustration comes in. I really love these videos. I really thought I was only obsessed with this for the last 20 years. And there's Chris. Loving it dude.. really good these vids

This "being on the verge of breaking into headvoice" is a key thing to Michael Jackson's approach. I tend to do this more like you do (hitting/holding a high note and then coming back down/letting it fall as we end the note) But his default is the opposite. He almost always let's it flip upwards as he ends a note. Even for notes that are not that high. You and I tend to comeback to a fuller, Chestier setup as default. He tends to always come back to an extremely light/thin coordination, even on mid and low notes. His approach is almost always like THat (capitals stand for chest/fuller sound)

@@chrisliepe This doesn't surprise me though. Not often mentioned is that industrial music especially NIN (apparently MJ loved The Downward Spiral) was influencial on MJ in the 90s. His voice and where his style was already headed perfectly suited to that genre. Listen to Morphine, Ghosts, She Drives Me Wild, Scream, 2 Bad... there are more examples during the History-era but these are a good starting point to notice it.

Love your analysis of MJ’s singing prowess , I used to sing and had the opportunity to train one time session with Seth Riggs in LA, and he had no e singing high C, by having me bend my head to his floor, and I’ll never forget he said yo me”Sly you can’t afford me “. So true but he referred me to his under study Steve Real, who was incredible as well

There's one thing you missed in your analysis & maybe the most crucial aspect. You're a good singer/analyst of vocals & you can hit the notes etc but whilst Michael had the technical chops you discuss etc what he really had in spades was the emotional sincerity and connection to the lyrics/words/sentiments embodied in the song & it's story. You can't fake or undermine that part & that's where the real art/artist/artistry lies, the emotion is what really makes someone tune in, whether they know it or not. Without that all of these techniques are secondary & much shallower in context.
