Michael Jackson... Incredible Talent... Surrounded by amazingly creative people...
With a song like Earth Song, as dense as the arrangement is, you really can't fully take in and appreciate what went into making the song unless you are able to hear some of the original, isolated musical parts. The vocals alone on this song are otherworldly!
WELL... I have been given the original studio multitracks for Michael Jackson's "Earth Song"!! In this video, we get to solo out vocals, choir, bass, drums, guitar... ALL of the incredible separated out instruments that went into this marvelous creation!
Join me as I listen through the whole multitrack song session and get to notice so many Easter eggs and nuances we'd NEVER have the privilege of hearing! ...From the way MJ moves in the studio and how that movement informs his performance and the whole mix, to musical parts and effects I didn't even know were there!

MJ's copyright owners will allow this video to remain on youtube but there must be consistent use of frequent stops. No one part of the the song in part or in whole can be played without frequent interruptions. This is partially why I stop and comment and sing during and after key sections that I play. If I just play the files, the video will be taken down. Presenting the files in this format with this kind of flow cements the FAIR USE intent which is why it can remain up on KZbin. Along these lines, I can not reveal where or link to the source files or I'll get a takedown notice as well. Giving away content that is not mine to give also falls outside of FAIR USE intent. Thanks for understanding and for enjoying the video! I'm excited for you to hear all the wonderful nuances!

Michaels Talent and ability is WILDLY under appreciated, and is so still to this day - when you hear and see his songs de-contructed, I'm specifically talking about you and "Home Studio Simplified" it really makes you understand what an incredible instrument Michael was and IS Just wow. While I wouldn’t equate her to MJ, you should check out Nina Hagen. If you’re not familiar with her, she’s at this point kind of the grandma of punk-goth (started in the 70s), but is actually the daughter of a famous German opera singer, and so Nina has that training. She can turn her voice _on a dime_ from gravelly to operatic to delicate from one note to the next. Look for a video called “Naturträume”. It’s absolutely amazing vocal work, even if you don’t care for the music at all!

Aggression maybe isn't the right word. Insistent, maybe? It's amazing, his soft vocal is so intimate, even tentative sometimes, but his grit is so solid. It's like a volcano in the ocean: his voice can be the calm waters or the lava, the ocean breeze or the crashing waves. Metaphors galore, but listening to soloed stuff just evokes all this visualization for me.

I remixed this incredible song back in 1995 for epic records. Here is my story: Hmmm, not sure where to begin telling this story without mentioning what an incredible story it is. I gave this song everything I got. When I first heard the “HIStory” album, “Earth Song” jumped at me!!!. I was simply blown away by this masterpiece. I was not shy or intimidated to mess with it a bit. Back in 1995 I only had one sampler. It only had room for 3 min of sampling time. I had to do this in 2 parts to fit what I needed. I remember how many times I got chills listening to the arrangement. Upon finishing it I was not sure what to do with it as I had no connections at Epic / Sony. I gave my “Earth Song” Remix on a DAT to Frankie Knuckles and the rest, as they say, is HIStory 😉 Frankie told me this ” Hani, you did exactly what this song deserved, Your work is sublime, you should have seen the reaction on the dance floor”. I was so happy. I heard Frankie play it on the air at New York’s station Hot 97 several times. 3 weeks went by then one morning my friend Michael McDavid excited on the phone telling me that Frank Ceraolo (A&R Epic) at the time is looking for me. I called Frank who was very excited and happy about it yet mentioned that Epic had no plans on releasing Earth Song at the time. He pitched it to Michael Jackson’s manager for approval. Epic actually had another MJ song in mind slated for release called “This Time Around“. A big remix package was ready to go however, the label thought it wasn’t strong enough. They simply needed this!! Upon MJ’s approval of my remix, I learned later on that MJ is going all out with a big budget Video to “EARTH SONG”. Boom!! In order to complete the remix package, I was granted access to his studio room at the famous Hit Factory. Upon entering the room my eyes went directly to the TR-909 Drum Machine & JUNO-106 Synth that both had his name printed on. I instantly gained even more respect for MJ. This man liked to mess around with gear too. I sat at the SSL Console for few hours extracting all the parts to “Earth Song” on DAT. The stems/parts to this song are unreal and out of this world. I left the Hit Factory that night with so much more respect for MJ as I was pretty sure this time how big this is going to be. Two months later The song reached No:1 in several countries. In the UK it stayed at No:1 for Six weeks during Christmas 95′. IN 1996 My “Earth Song” Remix got included on a Michael Jackson album! “Blood On The Dance Floor”. Interesting story about that end vocal, Michael was discussing with the sound engineers a song Paul McCartney had wrote and sung to the point he “lost his voice” for weeks after the vocal track was produced. Michael used this as inspiration for that last part. He also “blew his voice out” for some time after this vocal. You can really hear the passion in what he’s saying, to me this is Michael’s voice at its full potential. (Furthest we’ve heard him push it in the studio anyway).

What strikes me the most is how Michael was able to control how much imperfection was in his voice with more accuracy than just about any vocalist. If you listen to the first track only without the doubling, the first thing I noticed is that he didn't sounded technically perfect, which clearly was intent; but I didn't quite got how the vocals could sound this perfect in the final mix without correction at the time, until I heard the doubling. So he made a first lead pass with all emotions, slightly imperfect on pitch, and doubled it, but the doubling is 100% accurate, as a vocalist of this level would do, but significantly more detached from the meaning of the song as well... so *that's* how he was able to sound so emotional and perfect at the same time...! :O Even the best performers have a trick or two up their sleeves, but this blows my mind to bits. He was not on the same head space, but on purpose! That's what I call a pro gamer's move! What a giant. I also love that the labeling was done with the *intent*, like the intent of those swelling synths was to make them feel like a choir, so the track is labeled "voices". It's so cute and genius at the same time!

PERFECT!!! 🤍even Michelangelo, who MJ loved to draw inspiration from, at least as a responsibility of himself as an artistic galaxy, in the Vatican (religion has nothing to do with it, let's be clear about art) made statues that are perfect if viewed from below, where it is people, but when seen closely ( where people can not go ) , they are greatly out of proportion, precisely in function of their being perfect from where the public would have seen them. Similar to MJ's way of building vocal harmonies on the last few records (the ones without QJ, my favorites, without detracting from that crazy production of the first MJ)

How good does MJ sound from11:47-11:59 onwards with the acoustic guitar? It conjures visions of him singing this song in the middle of the most remote wilderness on the planet beside a camp fire. And 13:16 to 13:23 rivals anything from Star wars and LOTR.

The amazing fact about this song is that Michael worked on this song for 7 years before he released it (1988-1995). This shows how much of a visionary he was, very hard-working man.

Vocally, this is a very unique song. He let loose on this one. Makes it that much more authentic and raw. Absolutely great video. Can’t wait for you to hear more of these. Being able to hear all of these raw tracks is absolutely mind-blowing. Hope you can get to some of the Off The Wall album multitracks too.

MJ even clears his throat in the mix and its still in! We spend ages either removing that stuff or make sure it's not in their in the first place. Maybe we should leave it all in, and all the bad notes and stuff. MJ is truly the best. Only he could make bad things sound good. The best ever artist.

5:46, the unsettlement in his voice, you can tell that he's crying whilst singing this part which really shows how much he cared about the message of the song, trying to fix humanity and the world as we know it, as we keep trying to destroy it bit by bit. It's almost like he's trying to stress how blind and oblivious the world is

Chris I guess you didn’t know this, but, Michael Jackson beat boxed all the instruments in his songs because he couldn’t play any instruments. He would have musicians play and tune their instruments to his beat boxing. He basically did A cappella on his own. I would love to hear those recordings with everything layered on top of each other….I bet they would be so interesting to listen too.

Micheal used his body as an instrument in the music. He was one of the most purist dancers/musicians in the industry. He threw out all the rules of recording in the studio. What he was inspired to do in the booth became part of the song and was often emphasized on stage. The stage performance can be heard in its infancy upon creation of the song.

The section at 13:30 is very reminiscent of a pentecostal church. I remember when I used to go to church as a kid back in the 80's, whenever the preacher would get really into whatever he was preaching, he would hit a similar note and tone as Michael here, the choir and the band would back him up in a very similar fashion. It's a very moving experience.

I automatically get that the slight off pitch part in Michael's vocal fade out was his way to give a signal for the key change to start and proceed with the next portion of the song. The back up choir sounds very much like Andre Crouch's choir and they are all beautiful singers in their own right and I think it was pure genius for Michael to have them sing on this with him because it adds extra depth, character, soul and authenticity to the lyrics, sound and message being put a across with the song. One of MJ's best traits was how insanely layered and full the audio production is, with theajority of chorus vocals being recorded separately and then mixed to 1 track before recording and adding/mixing other tracks.
