Hoyt schermerhorn subway station in Brooklyn New York. The video was actually filmed in late 1986 and released in 1987. And the dance choreography was inspired by the film West Side Story and the storyline was inspired by a true story of a young educated man who was from the ghetto that later was killed by his old street gang friends out of jealousy.

This is not about being tough, or criminally bad as Michael said. He's saying he's good, he's alright, you know? It's based on a true story -- In a 1988 interview with Ebony and Jett magazines, Jackson said he was inspired by a true story that he had read about in either Time or Newsweek. Jackson stated that the story was about a student who went to school in upstate New York, who was from the ghetto, had tried to make something of his life and when he returned from Thanksgiving break, his friends' jealousy resulted in them killing him. Jackson stated that student's death was not included in the music video. Various Jackson biographers have concluded that the story he was referring to was that of Edmund Perry. However, Perry was not Killed by kids in his neighborhood, he was killed by a plainclothes police officer when Perry and his brother allegedly attacked and badly beat the officer in a mugging attempt. Maybe Michael read a different story or he based it loosely on Edmund but changed it so he never attacked the police but was criticized by his friends instead of being killed. That's the basis of "Who's bad? I'm bad". It' just means he's the good guy in this, he's cool as far as making something of himself and accomplishing his goals in spite of being criticized by his peers for doing so. Their definition of "bad" was mugging people and taking their money and things like that. Darryl's definition was the opposite, helping people and doing what's right. The style of his moves was meant to reflect the message. Michael uses dancing because he's a dancer. some will laugh at that and I understand that. Some other artists have used dancing in a similar way like Pat Benatar in Love is a Battlefield for example. They use dancing with the intention of being serious expression. I think that's good because it challenges peoples' perception of dancing. Other great dancers are Jackie Wilson, James Brown, Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Sammy Davis Jr. The choreographers were Jeffrey Daniel and Gregg Burge. Jeffrey Daniel said that in the making of the video Michael often improvised moves and also did some of the choreography. He could of improvised the whole thing if he wanted to. "Oh, God that boy moves in a very exceptional way. That's the greatest dancer of the century" Said Fred Astaire about Michael he also said "I didn't want to leave this world without knowing he my descendent was. Thank you Michael". I know this was long. I hope you don't delete it. 😃
