I'm a Michael Jackson Historian. I was around for all this. Went to several concerts throughout Jacksons/MJ Tours, 30th Anniversary shows, had tickets for This Is It. I still attend MJ events in LA, Vegas, NYC any and everywhere there's something MJ related. Mj One, MJ the Musical, The Who's Bad Tribut band. I've been to the Jackson's Home in Hayvenhurst, been inside Neverland a few times, been to court many times to support etc etc etc. Folks really have nooooo idea when it comes to Michael Jackson. We'll Never, ever, ever have anybody with this impact again. NEVER. I just wish the Documentary had gone deeper. I actually went to the special premiere showing of this is LA last year. Aloooot of stuff was cut out.I could go on but yall get the point.

They cut out a lot from the documentary on showtime? That’s crazy! The estate is selfish. Damnit! I want to pay to see it, but I don’t know it’s worth it. They should’ve included Spike Lee to do the project

They need to release the Director’s Cut then. This release was so weak, especially considering the cultural impact Thriller had. Really was disappointed.

I'm a true MJ fan to my core. I was only 2 months old when Thriller was released, but like this documentary stated, the reign spilled over for years, so I remember seeing the Motown 25 as a re-run, and I had to be around 5 years old, not knowing it first aired years ago. I was in an instant chokehold. He was absolutely breath taking. I felt that when the narrator said." the in person audience went berserk." I was going beserk in my living room. Then he came to Houston in 1989, my mother took me to the Summit. I couldn't talk, I forgot to breathe a few times, and we looked so cute, she and I in our matching outfits. My mom was puzzled because she spent all that money just for me to stare at him. When it was over I cried because I did not want to leave. To this day, that's the most precious memory and gift I have with my mother. That meant so much to me. I feel in love with MJ during the Bad, album, but when I got a little older (maybe around 12 years old) I appreciated this Thriller album. I also found it very ironic that he did not want to do the Pepsi deal, he actually hated the drink. I think he must have felt some intuition that something was not going to be right. But just as luck would have it, trying to please his greedy father, like most of us Virgos do sometimes, he went against his better judgment and his injuries I feel contributed to his untimely demise. I think had he not gotten burned and addicted to pain meds, he might still be with us. Only God knows, but I am every so thankful for gracing us with his talent.

As someone who is an avid fan of Michael, I was of course excited to see a documentary dedicated to such an album that shifted the music business. But, I really wish more time was dedicated to the songs on the album as more time was dedicated on the Off The Wall and Bad documentary. It did feel a bit rushed, but I appreciated it and would love to see a future documentary on Dangerous.

I literally knew everything they spoke of in the doc, esp. being a MJ fan particularly of this era when I was in elementary school but Off the Wall and Triumph are my fav MJ and The Jacksons albums, when my boy was dark skinned and very cute... I was just reliving the happiest days of my life, Jacksonmania and everything. MJ wasn't perfect but I think he's so amazing because we actually know very little about him personally given he was the most famous person who ever lived. He made life fun and I miss him so much...

Thriller is still the world's biggest selling album of all time with nearly 200 million records globally. The album was awarded to Michael by Beyonce at the World Music Awards by selling over 100 million copies in 2006 😮😮😮😮 So imagine how much more it has sold since then.

I really like your idea of breaking up the documentary into 'episodes.' Thing is, the OTW documentary from a few years ago did a GREAT job telling us about Jackson's beginning to his first major solo album with Quincy. Heck, that's why it was called Journey From Motown To Off The Wall. If nothing else, the Thriller doc could have briefly touched on the Jackson 5/The Jacksons/Off The Wall stuff before getting into Thriller. The moment I learned Spike Lee wasn't directing this documentary; my heart sank because he did so well with the other two...

The Thriller Era: Allow me to paint this picture. The year is 1983 and all the buzz and anticipation about this show was all us kids were talking about. Keep in mind we didn't have computers, tablets, cellphone/smartphones or Internet. In fact. At that time we didn't even have Cable Television. You only had Three networks ABC,CBS, NBC and to a lesser degree PBS back then and that was it for television. There were no television recording devices You could afford yet so if you were going to watch something on television you had better have that ass parked in front of the television or you just missed it!.... There was once a time when something highly anticipated was coming on television the streets would become suddenly like a ghost town...... Because everyone would be watching that program or else! So..... That day I ran to the store to get some soda and chips before the program came on and...... GHOST!........ LOL! No cars or people were on the streets. Bicycles and toys were left on lawns all over town like the people were suddenly abducted and taken away or something. LOL! After purchasing those Items I dashed back and parked my butt right in the middle of my brother and sister..... Now bare in mind that "Billie Jean", "Beat It" and "Thriller" was videos that were playing at the time on FMtv before MTV. People froze! Michael Jackson was the first to put real money into his videos and got actual movie directors to make his videos for him so when you go back and watch those videos keep in mind that no one was doing anything on the level and scale of Mike at that time! Now everyone already got a copy of Thriller that paid attention to music and it had already broke records for how much it sold but the sales was starting to die down........ UNTIL MOTOWN 25 HAPPENED!...... With This Performance He Blew Everyone's Minds! This was his very first live performance after making the videos! Keep in mind that it was all new! No one really seen Michael in between the "Off The Wall" Album and "Thriller" until the videos dropped and we were still amazed at how much better he looked and completely different! The One Glove the Sparkling Jacket the pants that flooded just enough to show the sock and the new complete look and transformation. This was the night he introduced for the very first time the Moonwalk! THAT WAS THE NIGHT! Michael Jackson became a super duper megastar at this exact point! So you are literally looking at the performance that took him into a level of fame that can only be explained as STRATOSPHERIC!!! This was fame like nothing anyone could imagine at that time. Just knowing he was in your area would generate Mass Hysteria! Thriller (the album) released November 30, 1982 would start selling faster then they could make it and stay that way well into 1987 literally!... Songs on this one album would be fighting each other for the number one spot on the charts for years! To give you a proper understanding, Thriller was outselling BAD his next album that was released August 31, 1987. His only competition was himself. He had no equals. Micheal would sweep every possible music and entertainment award again for years!.... So... 5 months after this show he popped in my town to do some last minute shopping at our local mall and had the entire mall closed but once it got out and the news was on the radio?!..... PANDEMONIUM! I'm telling you Michael literally drove an entire city to the point of insanity! Streets for miles in all directions were shut down! Screaming at the top of their lungs! Woman who looked 60 years old was passing out! Law enforcement had to park almost a mile away and walk to get to the mall plus squeeze through a very dense crowed just to protect the entrances! Teens crying uncontrollably! He had to end up being helicoptered out and when he stuck his glove out to wave as he lifted off that roof I seen so many woman pass out! All sound except my heartbeat fell away as I looked up and felt the air of the helicopter hovering directly over me.... For a brief moment "I Could See Inside Heaven!" It was the purest form of love and beauty! God was hugging us at that moment!..(Crying!) You don't see heaven with your eyes, you see heaven with your heart..... Slowly sound and environment comes back! All around me people and yes even boys were crying like babies! It was like God came and swept thru our city or something! Paramedics had to resuscitate people! People couldn't walk anymore it was like nothing you ever seen before!...... Completely nuts and THAT was the POWER of Michael Jackson!!!

This documentary made me look up which album "Working Day and Night" is on. I was swearing up and down, it was on the Thriller, but its actually on "Off the Wall." Back in the day, I loved doing step aerobics to "Working Day and Night." I can tell, you love music and dance like I do and I am so sure you probably lose your mind and body when "Working Day and Night" comes on. Please post video of you dancing to Working Day and Night. Have you checked out the instrumentals of Working Day and Night. The horns are the sh!t !!! Treat yourself to the instrumental. You can find plenty on KZbin. Hugs and Love to you my brother!

I love the mini series idea. I have to agree that it fell a little flat / shallow for me . I appreciated how Spike Lee covered all the songs in his documentaries. I wanted to hear more about the making of my favorite song , Lady in my life, and that wasn’t even mentioned! Also a lot of the footage I had seen on you tube. Thriller was the best selling album of all time - and changed the entire landscape of the music and especially pop music industry. I would have loved to feel more of the energy and gravity of Thriller in this documentary. That said- I did appreciate some of the higher quality footage, and hearing and seeing the bits of new footage of Michael that was in there.

Another dope analysis. I agree with you there were 3 things I thought about while and after I watched this: 1. I wish Michael (and Calvin since you mentioned other people who were have since died them too) were alive to tell his story, including some more stories and insight we've never heard before. 2. I wish this was like a 3 or 4 part docu-series like you mentioned. 3. I liked how they played some of the demos. I wish there would've been an extensive section focusing on how he structured and sung his background vocals and harmonies.

I think Michael’s fans should petition the estate to let Spike Lee do the proper justice to a Thriller documentary. His Off The Wall and Bad docs are amazing to me! I was excited to watch this one and think it was good. But it didn’t leave me feeling fulfilled in learning about Michael’s full musical intention for this body of work. This also could have included his siblings. Why are the family members never allowed to participate in talking about their memories during the creation of the demos that Michael made during this time?! Or about who he was as a person during this time. What he talked about. Latoya and Janet were very close to him. I just think so many opportunities were missed with this one.

I love that there’s been a few music documentaries and docuseries lately. I miss the documentary content of old. I don’t think I learned anything new from the documentary but did love the high quality visuals. I’d love to see a high quality victory or triumph tour. Something from the Jacksons. I once saw a great Smokey Robinson interview from the early 80s and he was exploring how radio resegregated by 1980 & Thriller helped to desegregate it again.

i lived through it all, didnt see the documentary. for someone who wasnt there, you are pretty acurate in your analyis. i was a big fan before Motown 25, and remember being disappointed in his solo performance. I remember noticing that his brothers were lip syncing the medley, while he sang live. that's why he gives Jermaine his mic on I'll be there. His vocal and dance performance on the medley was great. So, when he started the routine with the hat and the combing the hair, I remember thinking this is going to be great. But then he lip synced it. He said because the band couldn't replicate the sound, but it left me flat. the little 3 step moonwalk also was not impressive, because they were doing more on Soul Train. I was at the Destiny and Triumph tours and his dancing was spectacular, so I was expecting more. but I guess most of the rest of the world hadn't seen him as an adult and the performance was the hit of the show, and pushed the album to 3 more top 10's in the summer. I remember Billie Jean was #1 at the time of the taping, but it was gone before the show aired in May, and Beat It was #1 at the time of the airing. I learned years later that Wanna Be starting something was 4 years old and didnt make the cut for Off the Wall. I always thought that Dont Stop sounded newer than Startin somethin. it still does. Girl is Mine - I thought the lyrics were stupid until I heard Michael talk about how the sound of the words is much more important than the meaning of the words. Since then, I thought Girl is mine is great. Relisten with that in mind. I think you'll agree. Lady in My Life is the only real soul ballad Michael ever did. Quincy told him to "beg for the pussy". 1 take, laying in a bed, in the dark. most underrated Michael song of all time. I've talked to Pain doctors. After the burn, Michael probably had pain for the rest of his life. who knows what he would have done in the 90's if he wasn't addicted to pain killers.

Thank U for also like me LOVING THE ISH outta Baby Be Mine. Underrated AF song on Thriller. Fun quirky azz fact? That song written by the great Rod Temperton has the same groove and beat but for adult contemporary based. For a group called Manhattan Transfer aka the qyt version of Baby be Mine done by them is called Spice Of Life which Temperton also did for them. Actually, not bad at all and I do regularly bop it. I wish more time was given go into more detail on each of the song like what was done for the Off The Wall and Bad documentaries.

Great perspective. I watched “Thriller 40” at a last minute fan screening in Los Angeles and I remember more footage of the Jacksons (it was cut from the final film). I wish this documentary dug deeper like Bad25 and Off the Wall. Those two, directed by Spike Lee, captured the creativity and essence of MJ at each album. Thriller 40, to me, didn’t have that same heart and should have been more about the process of the album.

I watch the documentary last night for the first time. And my opinion is. They didn't take this anniversary serious. It was only an hour and a half. And it was only focusing on three songs beat it, thriller and billie Jean. And even that was edited poorly. I felt very let down. Most of the people talking, Michael fell out with before he died like John Landas Michael couldn't stand him. Why was he apart of it. Besides he directed Thriller video. And others weren't close to Michael, or he didn't know at all. Where was his brothers, and close friends.

I think Spike Lee would've done a better job directing this because he would've touched on every song and Questlove and Janet and Latoya would've been in it. I felt like it was all over the place and rushed hopefully they let Spike direct the Dangerous documentary

I have a question. The vocals on "Can you feel it", has it been my imagination did they purposely lower the volume on Randy's vocals on the album? I honestly think that it's on purpose. Even though Michael has a distinctive unmistakable even when they perform this live regardless of if it was the Victory tour Michael's 30 anniversary or any rendition that I've heard it always seemed like Randy's mic wasn't working well or was purposely lower then Michaels. We know Randy can sing even if he's not Michael. Also I think it is strange to me that even when they move to Philly they decided to keep Michael is the only lead. Like they couldn't even do a Boyz II Men or New edition type thing. I can't imagine that even by the seventies that they never really thought of that.

I feel bad for anyone born after 2000 who don’t understand the genuine experience of collective moments of pop culture in performances settings where millions of people all over the world 🌎 saw live performances all together and experienced it together unless their were time differences. Because of the change of technology at the moment we have lost the capability to create moments like that. I feel Michael career is a great example of that even Taylor Swift can’t capture that type of collective energy and momentum where it impacted fans globally.

In all honesty, I felt disappointed after watching the documentary. Something about it felt very rushed to me. They didn’t go as deep as they could have, only scratching the surface. Also, some of the commentators that they had just didn’t make sense to me.

I took issue when they was showing all the artists who was influenced by Michael Jackson dancing and they put in Justin Timberlake and Bieber in Dayton use Chris Brown who embodies Michael Jackson's dance moves was insulting to me. I don't know if they didn't use him because of his past history or what but I thought that was BS.

It was good. But not great like the two documentaries Off the Wall & Bad. I felt like there was much more to talk about it being the biggest ablum of all time and all. It seems like there just holding back so much from the public. Who wants to see much more and they're not giving it. For Michael Jackson not to have all of his shorts films in 4k is ludicrous to me. The estate is not doing Michael Jackson legacy any justice. In my opinion it was to short. Spike Lee should've done this documentary as well.

I heard off the wall in my dads car every day almost, radio was not segregated though, maybe charts and " official" stuff was. We could here Dolly, Kenny, Lionel richie, Michael etc on 1 station white stations y100 and power 96 in south fl. To me radio is much more segregated now. People who were not here at the time should not speak on then. With all due respect, I keep hearing this from u tubers reflecting on music, I credit you and others for keeping it alive, but this, no.

Please check out the Podcast by Damien Shields The Genesis of Thriller. This is a fantastic podcast he has the backstory for each song, and all the demos. PYT, Human Nature has interesting backstories. He has interview clips from MJ, Quincey, and the production team, Eddie Van Halen solo blew up (set fire) to a speaker during a playback. Just amazing stories please please go listen it’s way more in-depth and interesting than this doc. 😊
