I’m a Gen Z kid and I really only knew about Nasty, Rhythm Nation and (funnily enough) Feedback growing up and it wasn’t until I started really getting into music that I discovered Janet’s hits. It’s so crazy how little younger generations know about Janet considering she’s one of the most successful and influential artists of all time… We really need to start a movement on social media to restore her legacy because her discography (and videography) is way too damn excellent to be forgotten.

See, you can't kill Janet's legacy. Eventhough Damita Jo and the era's after that didn't produced any hits, it still sold 3 million WW, something ppl would die for 2day. On her next project, 2OY.O, Call on Me was #1 for several weeks on on the R&B charts and #25 on Hot 100 based on her name. On Discipline, Feedback reached all the way to #19 and the album went to #1, all while blacklisted. Unbreakable also went to #1, her 7th #1 album. She can still sell out arenas and stadiums. It's funny how things come full circle because today in 2021, she's beloved and favored more than anytime in her career. Her legacy is still intacted, she's in the R&RHOF and it's no question she's still Pop Royalty.

IMO DamitaJo is right up there with the best of Janet’s catalogue and the whole blacklisting thing just shows how unfairly Janet was treated with respect to other artists. I remember in school folks arguing who was better janet or whitney, because whitney came out around the same time. it's so funny now to think about. amazing artist. she worked hard for hers. as far as the Superbowl, I really think it was white mainstream media trying to take opportunity to knock out two birds with one stone. as around that time, that's when they were going after her brother. Janet was the one who always provided the more "normal" face of the Jacksons, compared to her brother...so this "controversy" was what they need to show how "strange" the Jacksons were. glad she didn't let it hold her back.

This is my take. I am 48 years old and I have been aware of Janet Jackson since the late '70s when I saw her as Penny on good times. I always liked her acting and still to this day prefer it and wish she would do more. I think her damita Joe album and the one that came after that weren't successful not just because the production was old and we've heard it all before for almost 25 years but because I don't think she's interested in being a singer artistically at least anymore. I think as she gets older she should venture more into acting again and writing. She's a wonderful writer. I have seen her on tour and I even saw her 2 years ago and even if I say that I don't think she prefers to make albums anymore she certainly loves to perform the songs. My most played album...the velvet rope. That is ART..that was HER most vulnerable album....I also appreciate the fact that she delved into shades of mental illness on it.

I really wanted/wished Janet was protected better after that Justine Timberlake debacle. However, after this/your commentary, I do realize nothing is by accident. Love everything about us, but hate us. Thank you young man. This ole woman has a new found respect for this strong young woman named Ms. Janet. You really know your peeps. You took research to another level. Thanks💖 WOW!💖

Slo-love is the "Feels So Right" of Damita Jo. even though both were never released as singles, as of 2021 they're the most played songs on present day radio from those album era's for some reason. not sure what the story is behind that but as long as shes getting airplay i'm happy.

I love how you broke everything down. From the history of Janet’s career, to the temperature of the music industry around her debut, to the events surrounding the release of Damita Jo. I had a good idea about most of the things you touched on but the way you broke down was so insightful. Damita Jo is an incredible album and it’s unfortunate that it didn’t get the acclaim and success it deserved and it sucks that the projects that followed didn’t get their just due either. My personal faves are: All Night, Island Life, Spending Time With You, R&B Junkie, Thinkin Bout My Ex, Moist, and SloLove.

The analysis of the music industry in the early 80s is so spot on. The demo for the girl is mine is so much funkier than the ultimate product.

You produced an awesome video! I remember wanting the African Sankofa tattoo because of Janet Jackson. I also had a wall poster of her in my dorm room just 10 years ago 🤣 I wish I could've seen her on tour. Your video makes me even more excited to see her documentary.

Wow! You are THE most skilled and intelligent person we have seen giving commentary on any artist. Thank you for your thorough research and your entertaining approach to educating us all. You remind me of the days of the late Casey Kasim. Sir, you most certainly deserve a much larger platform. Thanks for posting on Janet Jackson. She remains one of the most prolific entertainers of our time, and had THE best and most varied and intricate concert and video choreography out of any artist (yes Michael included and I am HUGE fan of MJ's), that I have ever seen.

I was really looking forward to Calvin dragging Les Moonves to h*ll for all of his misogyny and hypocrisy regarding his malicious treatment of Janet and the fact that Miss Karma came back around to collect his @ss in the end but we can't have everything. 🤷🏽♀️

How did Karma get him i wanna know details did he slip and fall or what 👀

@@angeluvsvid He got caught up in his very own sexual harassment scandal and had to step down as one of the head-honchos from one of the networks. He even took down his wife’s career. She was one of the ladies from The Talk. I think. I never liked her either. When Janet Jackson stories were talked about she never gave full-disclosure to the audience that she was married to the man that had dealings with JJ back during the Super Bowl thing.

@@ogeeche oh but most people knew she was married to him. She talked about it and even joked about it once on the show implying that's how she got the job. But yeah i dont recall hwr talking about that incident and her husband's involvement explicitly.

Thank you for this! I loved every minute. Ms. Jackson is a few months older than I am and when the control album came out it was everything! Life changing for a shy 18yo girl raised in a very traditional household. I have seen her in concert several times....the first time Mary J Blige was her opening act, and the last time in 2016. Just Beautiful!

There's actually more to the story about Janet & Shaggy. Shaggy also went on a homophobic rant, which enraged Janet, a longtime LGBTQ Community supporter. That was the other reason why she no longer wanted to work with him.

These mediocre black male artists constantly showing their asses! He's probably in the closet and never came to terms with that.

...NO, no, no-no-no...It was BEENIE MAN, who did that; Janet's label wanted to add "Feel It Boy" to the re-issue of her "All For You" album (the one where she's wearing the USA bikini top)...He went on STAGE at one of his shows, and ranted...making Janet give a call to her label, and properly 'distanced' herself from Beenie, claiming she 'didn't know' of his stances..... Shaggy actually (and, surprisingly) is supportive of LGBTQ causes, though he's yet to say anything outwardly, media -wise.....

Such a well done analysis. I remember how much i hated only seeing I Want You on bet sometimes and no where else. I wasn’t crazy about the Damita Jo album but as the Queen, she deserved all of the promotion she earned. I resent the fact that we lost YEARS of her excellent tours and live performances. All the worst to Moonves.
