It’s really just an honorary thing. He’s not really a king per se, as he can’t even speak their dialect, and that’s pretty fundamental. They gave him an honor and now the tribe will expect contributions. That’s really all it’s about. It’s clear that he understands the role, which is good but for those who don’t, being a king in Africa, honorary or not, is a burden. It’s not about riches and praise, it’s about service to your tribesmen. My grandfather was in line to be the king of our tribe, but he gave it up because he didn’t want the burden, so his brother took the title and grandpa took a lesser title. African monarchies are very complex. And no, it’s not something that Africans do with black celebs a lot at all. This is the first time I’ve seen this and I was surprised. It would be very odd to make random people kings of your tribe when they don’t live the village, speak the language or know the culture and when there is already a successor in line. Ghana was just doing this for show during the Year of a Return. Most African tribes would never do this, unless it’s for a large sum of money. I think some other Ghanaian tribe made some Chinese businessman and honorary chief because he would be building large infrastructure and even still many Ghanaians were livid. So, nah. This ain’t common or even really encouraged by the average African.
